Assignon

Just watching the game back from Saturday.
There are parts to Assignon's game that are excellent, good going forward, brave and tough in the tackle.
The areas he struggles with are areas that can be coached in my opinion, diving in, positioning, marking etc
I would love to see him stay, I just think there is so much scope for improvement with him and he's pretty decent already!

his attempt to stop the Sheff Utd goal was embarrassing, proper schoolboy stuff. Like you say, that side can be coached.

How full backs can get to this level whilst still thinking diving into challenges all the time is the correct way to go about things is pretty amazing. It shows a certain lack of intellect to keep continuously doing it without seeming to learn.
Apart from that particular trait I think Assignon has shown a lot of potential. I'm still not convinced by how he defends back post crosses though.

He was lucky to stay on the pitch in all truth.

A definite upgrade and one we need to keep.
Ian Maatsen was not all that defending either.

Experience. What most of this side are lacking, and what they'll have more of come the end of the season.
Most of the issues mentioned above improve with experience.

The incident on the touchline in the second half could easily have been a red.

He's very rough but I'm enjoying watching his swashbuckling endeavours.
That Joao feller for Brighton really didn't appreciate the attention he was getting from him.
I hope he stays.

I've messaged Mr Pace's daughter to see if she can do a social media campaign to try and keep Assignon at Burnley.

VAR looked at it, no contact and the Sheff Utd player got booked, he did nothing wrong and was a good bit of refereeing

I really like the way he plays and hope we can sign him. His one problem is that he uses his arms too much when confronting an opponent. If he carries on like that he will be seeing many more cards.

you don't NEED to make contact to be sent off, have to say I agree with Mr Castro on this one, very lucky to stay on the pitch.

No contact? I think you need to see it again.
If you're using VAR to support your argument then you haven't seen many games this season.
The Sheffield United player was booked for dissent btw.

I think it's time for a rule change: if anyone grabs your shirt you should be allowed to elbow them in the face.

It wasn't an elbow he brushed him off, the yellow was for holding Assignon back trying to stop a counter attack.
If anything slightly brushed him it was a forearm not an elbow

Where did I say it was an elbow?
First you said there was no contact, then you said it was a forearm, so which is it?
I was right. You definitely need to see it again!

Whether he made contact or didn’t he got away with it because he was being pulled back and was brushing him off. For a player that’s been accused of play acting it was great to see him not go down and crack on with the game.

I don't think there was contact but if anything slightly brushed Osborne then it was a forearm but I don't think it did.
If you wasn't suggesting an elbow then why are you saying it was a red?

As has previously been mentioned, it doesn't have to be an elbow for it to be red.
I think Assignon was lucky.

Doubt he stays. Haven’t we already signed a new right back in the lad from PSV?

I like him, but he is an obvious hothead who appears to be not the brightest in his decision making.
He should be banned for the season now. But that would be harsh. He shouldn’t have gone at Chelsea, has never had a red before, and was provoked at Bramall Lane.
He has decent pedigree, played in Europe for the last 3 seasons on and off. Has been marking players like Mbappe so far this season and managed that without a red. So I put it down to desire to stay with us by staying in this league. He has genuine desire. And I can forgive that. Like I say, I like him.

Looks a very good player to me. Think another prem side would be keen to snap him up next year. Very much a modern fullback in that he looks more like a winger who can defend than a true defender.

Several sources saying Shurandy Sambo . a young Dutch right back is penning a 4 year deal with us. From what I have read he is a highly rated player at PSV Eindhoven who is coming to the end of his contract, and would be a free

I think he's been mixed and has made some ludicrous errors (West Ham away particularly, but luckily wasn't punished) and shown himself to make silly/needless fouls - HOWEVER - he's really good going forward and has certainly improved week by week. I hadn't realised how young he was and he hasn't really played that much football in his short career so the potential is definitely there.
Assuming we go down I don't see any way we will be spending £10m on him, whether he wanted to come or not.

It’s a strange one, isn’t it, because from what I can tell that’s what we’ve agreed to spend on Esteve even if we go down. But that on two players, I agree, seem highly improbable.
Of the two I feel that scenario is preferable to it being the alternative way around, despite having a squad of CB’s more than able of playing in the Championship.
Assignon would improve us and our chances of promotion no end though, in my opinion.

I’m not sure I agree with all the hyped up comments about Assignon and his ability - and, despite his defensive frailty, I certainly don’t think he’s even in the same postcode as Ian Maatsen.
One half decent performance against bottom of the league who are essentially a decent championship team doesn’t win me over - I need to see much more from him. His play acting and his lack of defensive composure is a worry. I hope it works out but what does €7m buy you these days? Maybe a good championship standard player.

Very naive at times , and the "collapse " at West ham was unforgivable.

He’s a weird one, a proper different kind of fullback, from the sheer brilliance of a nutmeg to the reckless tackle in a matter of seconds. I think the word is an enigma, fun to watch though and I like him.

Raw with lots of potential. A little bit rash at times, but I like that he is prepared to go toe-to-toe physically. Offers us a lot going forward and ruthlessly exploited the space Sheffield gave him. Seems to want to play for the club, shirt and fans. Would be a good one to keep and give more experience.

When you try to do things you make mistakes and learn from them.
That's what frustrated me about Connor Roberts, he never tried to do anything. Just played it safe back to the keeper or centre half.
We have plenty of safe players in the team.
We need something a little extra.

I think Assignon was lucky.
But there does have to be intent to connect with the elbow for it to be a red if there is no contact. If a player only tries to brush off someone holding his shirt AND does not make contact with the elbow or fist/hand then it is not an offence.
Despite what the City/United/Liverpool/Arsenal etc supporting co-commentators on SKY will say when one of the big 6's players feels a contact in the area, contact IS permitted in the Premier League.
