La Liga games in the USA

Post by Vegas Claret » Wed Apr 24, 2024 3:28 pm

La Liga president Javier Tebas has announced that La Liga will play official league matches in the USA from the 2025-26 season

I wonder if the PL will try and follow at some point (it will)

Really worrying times. What will football look like in ten, twenty years?

Will we get a reduction on the ST price if so?

If I'm still around by then, I won't be watching it.

I suppose it will be Barca, Real and Atletico, and can't think who else, so these teams will become yet more powerful over the rest, and other leagues will be thinking they better join in for the same reasons.

Probably double in price claiming more tourists want tickets so need to increase

We may be not far away from an NFL style super league based in the US with games between all those rebel European super league clubs involved. You never know.

Yup - of course they will.

That's exactly why they scrapped replays - they're trying to clear their calendar as much as possible for all this razmatazz.

Global financiers have ruined and will continue to ruining this sport and sporting heritage because at the end of the day, all they care about is the $$$$$$$$$$.

They’ve pretty much turned the Champs league into the “ Super league “ that saw a bit of an about turn from the super clubs once the fans voiced an opinion .

They stopped qualifying play offs few yrs back , god forbid a Man Utd/ Liverpool / Juve etc being knocked out in a tricky playoff . The next extension that sees a leap to 189 games ! and yet more clubs and a league style table ( no pesky group knockouts after a late defeat or tough away draw ) to ensure the big boys can guarantee their cash flow . Not forgetting 2 other large Euro comps to keep the riff raff happy .

Id imagine a few earmarked “ super games” in the prem
will get the “ treatment “ in the next yr or so .

He said they want to play them in the US, not that they will.

Tebas has said this several times over the past few years and every time, every club in La Liga (including the big two) has told him to get stuffed.

Tebas is one of those administrators who talks a lot of nonsense all the time, gets very upset when nobody agrees with him, then goes quiet for a while until he comes up with a new, ridiculous idea.

Not a chance it will happen.

Isn't there some FIFA regulation at the moment which means you have to play league games in the home country? I can't remember the exact details but I think there is a court case at the moment between them and an American TV company to try and force FIFA to remove that rule.

Given there are already Spanish Cup finals outside of Spain I suspect that is probably all that is stopping them. And then I suspect we'll see the Premier League saying that we really can't afford not to keep up with them.

There is a rule but we've seen far too often that rule tend to be broken when these club owners want something.

we know from recent events re the long running legal case pursued by the promoters Relevent against the MLS and FIFA that FIFA have backed down, been removed from the litigation and are considering how best to adapt it's rules to permit these actions - hence the recent statement from Javier Tebas.

For those who believe that the big two do in Spain do not want this - that is far from true in the case of Barcelona who have long pursued this and were the first club to sign up to the deal when first attempted 4 years ago.

This case has been followed from it's inception on the MMT and there was a recent separate thread about the FIFA capitulation in the light of a probable judgement in the US courts

These are the ones who have just been awarded Football League highlights in the US so I imagine Wrexham playing a league match in the US wouldn't be too far behind.

They have also has a long running partnership with UEFA, which fed the International Champions Cup which was played in North America, Australia and the Far East, and they were also behind the North American TV deal with La Liga, they are also involved in South American broadcast deals too.

their commercial importance to so many leagues federations and confederations has made this situation a case of when not if.

I like the idea of a couple of games a season being played in the US but I would maybe trial it with the FA Cup Semi Finals. People seem unanimous that they dont want the semi's played at Wembley and would prefer it to be played an a neutral ground be we know that the FA need the revenue it brings.

If the US payed enough money then that would satisfy the FA from a financial perspective, the fans would get their wish to see the semi's at a neutral venue and we could get a taste of what Premier League football in the US might look like.

Basically we could kill three birds with one stone

I can see why you might think that. But its not the case.

The US Soccer Federation has fought against this happening to the extent that they have been a long-running court case over the matter with a group of promotors who have been trying to bring games to the USA. FIFA were backing them - until very recently.

And I am pretty sure that Major League Soccer doesn't want other (bigger) leagues operating on their patch.

They were in court about 3 weeks ago with a company from new york...and the new york company won, fifa cannot stop teams playing abroad...money will eventually destroy the english game. it isnt far off now
