RIP Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues..

For me his biggest contribution to pop music was his work with the Mellotron.

The first albums I ever bought were Days Of Future Passed right through to Seventh Sojourn.
Great music and a big part of my school and college days in the late 60's and early 70's.
I think Mike Pinder played a big part in the development of the Mellotron.
RIP.

He was a major influence on the music scene in the mid sixties to the early seventies. Worked for the manufacturer of the mellotron in Birmingham before being part of the original Moody Blues in mid sixties onwards. Knew how the instrument worked and was forever pushing the boundaries with it. With the revamped Moodies in 66/67 he was keen to change the group's sound and acquired a mellotron from the social club of the Dunlop Tyre factory in Birmingham with all of the tapes hanging out of the back. He reassembled it, returned it to full working order and was used on many recordings as well as being able to take it on the road to produce studio quality sound on live performances which became a benchmark for many groups at that time. He introduced the Beatles to the instrument who quickly acquired one and was heavily used on Strawberry Fields forever. Still pushing boundaries he found a way to "bend" notes which allowed fewer keys needing to be pressed and effectively became the forerunner of the Moog and modern day synthesisers.
RIP MP last of the original Moody Blues . A true music pioneer.
