Prem or Championship?
Be honest, do you really want us to pull off 2 wins and stay in this League? Or would you look forward to the new season more if we were in the Championship again?
I'm happy either way.

I'd find it much easier to answer this question if I knew who from the current crop we could keep hold of and who we'd lose.
Re: Prem or Championship?
Probably more enjoyable in the Championship but there is no point watching if not hoping to win and stay up.

It wouldn't bother me which league we was in below the Premier league until it sorts itself out because to be honest i have enough of it not just decisions but the blatant cheating to give yourself a chance of staying in the league and not get properly punished..

Aspiration is to compete at the highest level possible, for me, rather than to decimate teams week in week out because you're a far better team than the opposition in your league.
I leave that to the teams Pep Guardiola chooses to manage

Prem just on the basis staying up would be a miracle now and I’m sure we’d continue to see further development of the club…….but….
Championships more fun, no VAR and bottom generally can beat top……….you never really go to a match knowing the result before kick off…..

It's a tricky one, the Championship is just a much better league to be in. Proper football, rather than the Sky Soap Opera. But you have to want your team to sit at the Big Boys table.Jimmymaccer wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 9:24 amPrem just on the basis staying up would be a miracle now and I’m sure we’d continue to see further development of the club…….but….

The only problem with hoping for a return to the Championship is that I have a feeling financial issues might beset us if we dont return to the Premier League within a season or two.

As a fan, I can’t wait for the Championship, tbh. Probably been looking forward to it since Palace away, if not before.
Not been to many games this season, so planning on getting to 10+ away games next, which may be wishful thinking with the kids and shift work.
Especially looking forward to Portsmouth and perhaps one of Oxford or Peterborough.
Appreciate the club see it differently.

Football is still a sport in the championship so looking forward to it, regardless of whether we're any good. It's almost certain we'll never be anything other than making up the numbers in the PL because it's a business league that needs massive reform rather than a sporting competition. I wasn't that arsed about us being in it again this season but it's so ****** that it's killed football at the top level so, apart from taking the money to keep the club going, I'm more than happy to be out of the boring procession it's become.

Got to be staying up if only for the money
If relegated and not promoted in the next 2 seasons (with the parachute payment) it could be down to League 2 before long
Once the money stops most of the teams in the Championship will have bigger revenues than us (gates Stadium sales and shirt sales )

Fans don’t like the PL because we can’t compete with the big clubs.
Fans like the Championship because are one of the big clubs

For Lancashire bragging rights the Premier league, for our financial security, again tge Premier league, for sheer enjoyment of us winning and compering and no VAR the championship.

You also need to factor in that a lot of these bigger clubs in the championship are in a lot of debt already and don't have much money.DAVETHEVICAR wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 10:41 amGot to be staying up if only for the money

For me it's the championship all day long. I know the money is an issue, but that is up to us to be sustainable as a club in the long term.
But VAR has killed it for me, it's just another layer of protection for the bigger clubs, and allows the premier league to swing narratives whichever way they want to. Remember the no foul on Trafford? Explanation was "Oooh we want to set a higher bar from now on for fouls on the goalkeeper". Then see the Bournemouth goal that got ruled out, and you can all agree that bar has been conveniently reset. Too many instances of this.
In our last 2 home games we've had two cast iron penalties not given which never even went to VAR. And according to Dermot Gallagher, they both should have been given. Then you get serial cheats like Anthony Gordon, and Kai Havertz conning refs week on week.
You also can't celebrate a goal properly anymore, everything is so sterilized.
Can't wait for next season

I'd actually be a bit gutted if we stayed up now. Sounds daft but thats the way i feel. Looking forward to some enjoyable away days again, no VAR, more local derbies etc.

Re: Prem or Championship?
Burnley needs to be playing in the highest league, not just for the club but for the town, itself.
The way VAR has been implemented has reduced my enjoyment of live football tremendously, but that is because of its implementation. An intelligent ex-pro, with not affiliation or affiliation to both competing clubs should be part of decision making… so ref’s that have never played to a decent level can get help with fouls/dives… this could have been done in seconds… another ref and two players with foul/no foul buttons could give majority decisions in real time. If the old daylight rule was reintroduced for offsides 90% could be given in real time… etc.
I wanted VAR because of BLATANT bad decisions… which get worse the lower down the pyramid you go, not for pendents to spend two days drawing lines while the pace of the game is killed… VAR is a nonsense, which encourages rather than discourages cheating. That could quickly be changed if there was a Will to do so.

Re: Prem or Championship?
The referees are inferior in the Championship.
Teams cheat as much , falling over and wanting players booked.
Teams attacking and lose the ball the attacking player falls to the ground gets the game stopped and prevents the other team from getting the advantage
I have watched more Championship matches and Leagues 1 and 2 than premiership games this season
Be careful what you wish for

I don't mind poor refs tbh, it's poor refs AND VAR getting it wrong, that's what I struggle with. The Prem is so corrupt, they barely hide it anymore.DAVETHEVICAR wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 11:58 amThe referees are inferior in the Championship.

Re: Prem or Championship?
Oh for the days when we could cut it in the PL. Yes, we got turned over at City every time and in London sometimes. The media and opposition managers hated us but we knew how to battle and, I'm sorry, our football was good at times.
But a season like this one when you dread Saturdays is totally needless to one's well-being.

Re: Prem or Championship?
for the town itself, its got to be the prem
for the club to be as good as it can possibly be
for feel good factor / busy businesses, pubs ,hotels, restaurants etc
positive global exposure of Burnley
as much as I dislike the big teams, it is still more exciting going out for a pint early doors when we are playing them later in the day rather than say a rotherham for example

I’ve got a season ticket but I’ve stopped going on. Not because of the results or way we play.
Simply because I’ve had enough of this league, it feels that we’re being cheated by everyone associated with it. Also, I see VAR as the worst single thing ever to be introduced into sport.

Totally agree, I have missed more matches this year due to health wining the decision over watching the match than any of the the last 27 seasons purely and simply for the reason you stated, where as normally if i could walk i would be going no matter what.Stproc wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 1:24 pmI’ve got a season ticket but I’ve stopped going on. It should be the Prem, but I know I'll enjoy days out at the football more next season. If you're an Ipswich fan, or Luton last summer, I'm sure it's still magical. But we've been there too much and it's tedious.
Anyone who sat through Man City v Wolves will know that as a competition, the top level of football in this country is pretty much finished.

The Premier League showcases the worst in football
Elite status clubs, players , delusional fans, touristic , Americanised, merchandise, Betting,
Clubs judged on how rich you are . you need to be in the billionaire club to compete with the top 6 on a regular basis.
Reality is we are a small mill town club punching way above our weight in demographics wealth etc we will never be a worldwide household name, a few freak results and the odd good season, maybe a venture into a lower level European competition. Realistically we wont be there with the Utd's or City's
For comparison stockport, Mansfield Town and Wrexham who have just been promoted to League two are all larger town /cities than Burnley
Certainly enjoy watching football where we have a good chance of wining and competing , win lose or draw, season after season watching defeats soon drains your passion, When you go one goal up in the first 5 minutes and you want the game to end just for the points . I don't enjoy the PL personally as a fan but realise you need to complete to get in it even if we come straight back down as we need the money

I have spent my whole life waiting for Burnley to be good. Now I’ve got it, I find myself frustrated at wanting less…
Of course I want us to play our trade at the highest level, but the PL and all it has become has been a massive anti climax for me.

Re: Prem or Championship?
Each to their own opinion I guess, but I'd rather watch Burnley play good football and dominate teams in the championship (clubs who are a lot bigger than us I might add) , than watching players like Son and Havertz stroll around the Turf banging in 5 goals. I hate watching us lose and I hate it even more if we are embarrassed.

I feel that the “project” would be better off with a relegation and rebuild, to improve, rather than another year struggling at the foot of the table. I can’t see any way we can stay up and improve enough.
Re: Prem or Championship?
The problem is that, when you finally get to the Premier League for the riches, you don't get enough to properly compete so end up going into debt to still get relegated. Look at how many teams have almost gone out of business, because of trying to stay in it, by spending well above their means. A club our size will eventually get relegated anyway.

Re: Prem or Championship?
Never been one to buy into wanting to see some of the best players in the world on our pitch for the opposition. I don't care who we play I support Burnley. It's like that weird argument when top sides play weakened sides in the cup and fans of the opponents but I wanted to see their best players not the reserves.
I don't have BT sport so don't watch champions league but if I had it I would still have watched Bolton Barnsley over the champs league semi of Dortmund PSG. I watch very few tv prem games as I find them uninteresting and uneven. I know there are those who think the Prem is the be-all and end-all of football but it really isn't.
The away days in the Championship are miles ahead of aways in the Prem

Re: Prem or Championship?
Naturally we all wanna stay up and another prem season but the Champ can be good fun if you’re winning . Though the sheer hell and drudgery of becoming a mid table championship also ran would be a tough pill to swallow .
Re: Prem or Championship?
I've not felt any real desire to go this season. The expectation that you will be ****** off as a result of some inequity is too high. I doubt that we are the only club with supporters that feel this way.
Hopefully, it will come back next season, but I'm not holding out a great deal of hope, so imagine that I will be enjoying boston United's return to the conference and another merthyr promotion push.
Driving 300 miles home after being robbed of a home win (or point) is one of the worst parts of football. It's not so bad if it was an away game.
