You'll always be a Claret!

Post by SurreyClaret99 » Sun May 19, 2024 9:12 am

When I saw the news about Cork and JBG, for some unknown reason, i started singing 'You'll always be a Claret' in my head!!!

And it got me thinking, what is it about certain players that always make them a Claret, when some come and go and we don't give them a second thought?

The players that “get” the club

They don’t need to necessarily be the best players - most times they aren’t, but they are the players that understand what the club means to the fans and give everything for it

I doubt we will be singing the same to Wout when he leaves

Not sure on the answer to your question but 8/14 years service definitely helps.

I hope we sing this out loud and proud for JBG and Corky today. Will be a nice memory for them, especially Corky who doesn’t really have a song.

I noticed the tweet from the club said 14 years service for Cork, he was signed 14 years ago however had spells at Solon and Swansea in that time.

Anyhow, yes, both great servants to the club and provide many memories for us.

Would be a shame if we don't know before today about Charlie or Jay, as both have been great servants and deserve a proper send off.

I can’t imagine any of VKs signings will ever be “you’ll always be a claret”. I’ve struggled this season to feel that togetherness between players and fans that I always felt we had under previous Managers, especially Dyche teams. Not having a go at VK it just feels like a void to me.

I hope we give all the players, especially those leaving, a good shout today.
Now, especially, is the time to show our support and gratitude for the effort that they've put in over a long, tough season, often against damn near insurmountable odds.
As for the "void" mentioned above, I'm pretty sure that will disappear after the first few wins early next season.

If any of them do eight years they will be.

You don't even need 8 years to be a "you'll always be a Claret". Roger Eli played only 4 seasons and barely started in the last of them. It's attitude (and results) as much as longevity.

You either have to be (Qualify on 1 of the below criteria - but if you tick off 2 or 3 it's where you get the full Always Be A Claret status)

1 - A level above ability wise to what is normally expected - this can be shown in very small periods - Examples, Defour, Cahill, Little
2 - You have to be hard - Pender, Deary
3 - You have to do something memorable - preferably against Blackburn - Ball, Ings
4 - You have to be here a long time or work very hard - JBG, Cork, Patterson
5 - You have to be likeable - or do some good - Vokes, Arfield, Steve Thompson
6 - You have to be local / a fan - Payton, Jay.

However, you can undo it all by doing something perceived as dickish,,, usually leaving under a perceived cloud

Shackell, Nogan, Wood, Mears, Steve Davis etc

There's the formula.....

He's in at least 3 categories - maybe 4 or 5. Proper Claret Legend..... it'll take a lot for us to replace him ahead of next season. Won't be easy.
