This came up on my timeline the other day. It’s from when Castore and Newcastle tried to charge fans £165.
YES, £165! for a band average hoodie.
I’m not expecting us to see prices like that, but I’d definitely brace yourselves for monumental price hikes in merch from the club shop next season.
We’ve been given a fairly bespoke package of the Mancunian sportswear brand, so don’t expect much templated items. But, that will sadly mean more cost to us no doubts.

If idiots want to pay £165 for tat, then let 'em. They'd quickly adjust their prices accordingly if nobody bought them.

The price of items in the shop now compared to quality are ridiculous, cheap quality and a rip off price

I think we’ll be looking at a minimum of £60 for an adult shirt next season but that’s still probably cheaper than the going rate across the country.
We have been quite ‘spoilt’ that our shirts stayed around the £40 mark for a good number of years whilst prices at other clubs began to increase significantly. The early Umbro shirts were an example of this I think. Ours were £40 whilst them lot down the road were significantly higher even though they were produced by the same brand and were of exactly the same quality of product.

I'm surprised anyone at Newcastle would buy won. I thought they were all stripped off down to the waist when they went to game.

Stick a Stone Island badge on the left sleeve and it’d be worth every penny.

Shocked at the hikes in things like designer t-shirts over the last 24 months. Pop into TK Maxx now and bargains are hard to find for brands like Ralph Lauren etc.
So any hike in club apparel will in part be due to that, not just Castore.
We are in an era of massive inflation and prices often tend to go up by even more for some products. I expect about £65 for a home shirt.

Complaining about the price of a Newcastle hoodie is surely as far from being "justified" on a Burnley board as you can get.

If the club comes out and says you have to wear one to attend a game then I can understand the latest whinge.
If like almost everything else in life it is optional then I struggle to get why anyone would be arsed. Do you walk past a high street clothes shop and moan at something in the window for £200 ?

I can’t get concerned about the price of something I’ve zero intention of buying, even at a fraction of the price.

I would guess at £72 for the home shirt , in Ireland they want €96 for an international shirt .
These guy are nothing but major fools , mark my words .
I will never and i mean never buy anything from Castore .

You shouldn't expect to get ripped off for expensive but poor quality gear from your football club.
It would be better if it were reasonably priced and decent quality.

So which sports brand should they sign a deal with that is renowned for selling merchandise at reasonable prices?

I have no idea of the quality of Castore, I have never bought anything by them and I am about 100% certain I won't be buying anything by them. I have no idea of the prices or quality of the stuff in the club shop. This whinge seems to be about the price of a Newcastle product without waiting to see what comes out at this club. Are Preston with Castore ? Do they sell this £165 top as well ?
People buy football shirts every year for daft prices, they aren't decent quality either.

Rangers new Castore away shirt is retailing at £75 on both the club website and Castore’s.

It doesn’t mean ours will be that high (as alluded to in my Umbro example further up the thread) but we’ll be having a rise from the last prices. PNE’s Castore shirt was £60 last season

What about families with more than one child?
Up to 8 years £45 full kit after that your looking at close to £80 per kit before you start adding names and numbers on as well.
Then add in other merchandise kids ask for because they support their local town club and it starts becoming expensive.
The quality doesn't justify the price.

I don’t mind paying decent money for decent clothes, but I don’t think I’d wear a BFC hoodie if it was free so I’m not the target market here, but if they charge £160 for a club shop hoodie I can’t see them shifting many.

Struggling to work out the point you are trying to make.
I have already said football shirts aren't great quality, but people happily buy them. We have grown men wanting them on sale earlier in the year so they can wear them.
If by full kit you mean shirt shorts and socks for £45 I don't immediately think that is a rip off, without know the price I would have guessed around the £50 mark.
How much is the England kit for this summers euros ? How much are kits at other championship clubs ? Those same clubs probably have fans with more than 1 child too.

My local club, Guiseley AFC, are still charging £35 for last years shirt. They get about 300 through the gate most weeks if they are lucky.
Rip off merchandise isn’t a Burnley, PL or EFL problem. It’s not even a football problem. It’s the world we live in. Just don’t buy it.

All clubs are the same though so have much better quality gear for sale.
The point is football in general is ripping fans off in club shops, there is no need to sell at the prices they do.
Umbro what we've had recently is dirt cheap in shops stick a Burnley badge on and the prices go up and up

To be fair, the fact kits now only last 1 season should be enough to put people off buying shirts at full price.
I don't remember the furore surrounding the change to one season kits. It was a massive deal with newspaper campaigns and protests when they moved to having 3 bi-annual kits in the mid 90s.

Was a rule not put in place around this time about not being able to change kits so regularly. My memory might be playing tricks on me, but I’m sure that this was the case.
If it was, it certainly didn’t last very long.

I think there was but as you say it didn't last long. I suspect clubs got around it by having manufacturer and sponsor deals changing alternate years "forcing" them to change the kit each year.

Simple answer, don't buy it then. Unless they're playing footy grown men shouldn't be wearing replica shirts anyway. With the possible exception for some of the classic retro one's!

Is this your first season as a fan?
Football shirts have been a rip-off for decades. The same kind of shapeless polyester mess that used to go for £20 at JJB Sports becomes £50+ when you add a badge and sponsor to it. T’was ever thus.
All the power in this transaction lies with the fans but they utterly fail to wield it. If you see something that looks awful, feels tatty and is priced ridiculously in any other clothes shop, you leave it on the hanger. But see something like that in the club shop and people will grumble all the way to the cash desk with it in their hands.
Haven’t seen anything recently but every time I’ve seen reports about overpriced shirts in the past with a think-of-the-children tone, it’s pointed out that by far the largest football shirt size sold is adult Large.
Bit of willpower on the part of the average football fan and this argument is over. Long past time more people realised that.

I think that was literally what they did. I seem to remember both England and Man United (both with Umbro IIRC) being heavily criticised and then they moved to alternative years for the away kits so there was always a minimum of one new kit a season.

It was 6XL with Umbro!
I'm 6'6 and a relatively big lad (all muscle obviously...) and always needed a 4XL with Umbro and Puma and wouldn't be surprised if there are bigger (both taller and wider) clarets than me!

I wouldn't personally buy a football shirt as I think they look ridiculous on pot bellied old men and I don't need to prove who i support.
If I was to buy one though, there are plenty of rip off replicas that look as good as the originals at a fraction of the price.
I'm not advocating criminality but just like live streaming, if these companies didn't take your eyeballs out, there would be no market for the illegal stuff.

Top and bottom of this thread is that many are miffed that we have gone to Castore. Get over it. Nothing could be worse than that home shirt and two away shirts from Umbro last season.
Perhaps Nike should be begging us to go with them? They would be making the club charge around £75 for a flimsy replica shirt, especially considering the small number of shirts we would sell in comparison to a big club with global attraction.
