I think it puts all those “he was going to come to us” or “we should have put a bid in earlier” posts into context and to bed!!!

We did agree a deal with Chelsea last year but the player turned it down

Odd one, really. Imagine we had paid the stated £31m and still gone down, he'd be labelled as bad business. Had we stayed up, he'd probably have been considered overpriced. Now he's gone for more than that figure, but to a champions league club, after playing in a champions league final. Funny old game.

And I think it would have smashed our transfer record into orbit if I'm not mistaken.

It wouldn’t I’m told, not even close to the highest. There would have been add ons but we would have had to be in a hell of a good place for them to trigger.

If we could have somehow got Maatsen and Tella to join up early on in the summer, I genuinely think the whole thing might have been different.
As it happened, we ended up signing a load of misfits who were badly managed and by the time we did agree a fee for Maatsen, I doubt it would have made much difference to the final outcome.

I liked Maatsen but he didn’t like tracking back to defend quite as much as running forward.

Said the same to a Villa supporting mate tonight.
He was very good for us but suspect defensively. He’ll go on to be a top player and I did think he looked much more disciplined in the CL final.
Just shows what players can go for. He’s not developed so much in the last 12 months. If we’d signed him we’d be in for a massive profit a year on.

Tremendously skilful player and was a joy to watch for us - think he will struggle when up against the top teams though. All the best Ian.

I said after his first game for us he’d go on to be a full international for the Netherlands. Tremendous talent.
That being said, even if he had signed I highly doubt the final outcome would’ve been any different.

Didn't you realise we are bankrupt, no manager will go near us, and the chairman is a mormon?
We are doomed.

We were blessed with an outstanding team that got us promoted … I would have loved to see how that group would have fared in the premier league with us but instead
we witnessed a horror show …

He's a decent player, but i genuinely never understood the hype. Certainly not the £30m+ pricetag aspect.

Remember very early on when asked words to the effect that if Tella signs permanently he’d think about it, which suggested to me even then that neither realistically thought they’d be staying beyond the loan.
