I just counted 8 uses of the word “press” in about 30 seconds of commentary, and it had nothing to do with what was happening on the pitch. Someone’s had a bet on…

That's all too true. Towards the back end of the season Kompany kept talking about how we had been the better side in games. It can only because he was thinking that the passing in the middle of the field was the important bit, and the scoring of goals and prevention of the opposition scoring is a triviality.

I came off the Turf really disappointed after beating Liverpool 2-0 in 2016 because our XG was awful, we didn’t ‘play through thirds’ and it was more low block than gegenpress.

There were more goals scored last season in the premier league than in any other season. And not just a few, 200 more goals. Say what you like about modern tactics and whatever but football today is as entertaining as its ever been.

I am glad I grew up watching football without the need of places like twitter to educate me and tell me what to say.

Press
Break the lines
Create an overload
Pivot / Double pivot
Through the 3rds

All used by dullards who seem incapable of thinking for themselves and repeat the current trendy coaching phrase. It is boring enough when you hear ex players doing this it is mind numbing when supporters do it.

So just fractionally over one extra goal every other game played (200/380) or 0.52 ish of a goal per game.

Absolutely. I only wish football had been invented before 1992 so I would have had something to watch in my childhood.

If goals per game is the measure of entertainment, last season was the 33rd most entertaining.

(PS - 162 more goals.)

Likewise, with players referring to numbers rather than positions.

Back in the day players were known as strikers or centre forwards. Now its a number 10 or false 9 for example.

Midfield players were simply known as Midfielders. Now it's a number 6 or number 8 depending on how high up the pitch you are. Why can't players just say they are playing further up the pitch rather than saying they are a number 8. Declan Rice is guilty of that.

While we’re on the subject of annoying words used in the media how come “shows” have now replaced “programmes. on the BBC radio?

Which is ironic given the actual numbers on shirts have been meaningless for years now.

If we extend it to cricket, when did it become compulsory to say "long levers"? And what does "bowled it into the pitch" actually mean?

Our problem last season was that we could not effectively transition between the low block and the high press
As for a false No 9 - we had loads of them up front hence the lack of goals

Isn't this reverting back to "old" terminology in some ways, when the numbers were 1-11 and the number reflected the position you were playing, with half-backs, inside forwards and such like?

I'm not interested in watching cricket. Years ago for some reason (possibly some sort of strike) there was no commentary - just music was played. It was actually quite enjoyable.

For TV football I always turn the sound off. Shame I can't hear the atmosphere but what the commentators/pundits are of no interest to me. In fact they spoil the game.

For England matches, after seeing the first two games - only the first halves - I won't be watching them again.

I don't disagree in general, but "pivot" isn't new. It was used to describe the midfield player that ran the show (a "doughty pivot") in Jennings Goes to School, Anthony Buckeridge, published 1950.
