I’m assuming because they finished bottom and there would be an odd number of teams if all 3 of us were included?

The number of byes is calculated to make sure that (a) teams playing in Europe get a bye to the third round and (b ) there are 32 teams in the third round. Given those rules it just works out that 1 ex-PL team has to play in round 1.

Because they need to have 35 teams knocked out.

1st round: 70 of the 72 FL teams - 35 winners
2nd round: 35 winners from 1st round plus Burnley and Luton, plus 13 Premier League teams not in Europe is 50 teams - 25 winners
3rd round: 25 winners from 2nd round plus 7 Premier League teams in Europe is 32 teams and then a straight knock out.

1st round is played in the midweek after the first games which is why they've been able to put Luton v Burnley on the Monday without affecting the cup schedule.

That's what I was saying, they've scheduled that one for the Monday night ahead of any other because all the other opening games feature teams in the 1st round so they'd have had to push ties back to Thursday to facilitate that with those clubs following weekend games put back. This one is easy which is why they probably paired us together for the first fixture.

Wasn't it in the Dyche era, perhaps 15/16 season, where the League Cup 1st round was played prior to the league season?

Clubs could decide whether to play it on the weekend before or in the midweek before, we possibly lost to Port Vale and chose to play on the weekend?

We beat Port Vale in 2012 under Eddie Howe before the league season kicked off. Played on the Tuesday night before the first league game.

Was it because of the Olympics in 2012, or am i imagining that?

We lost at Port Vale on a Tuesday night away in 2015. Between the 1st and 2nd league games

I had to check cos Tony confused me. I was at the 2015 game and was sure we lost. Completely forgot about the 2012 game

We lost that one in 2015 but that was after the draw at Leeds. I had a meeting at the Turf the following day, non football club meeting, and there was Henri Lansbury waiting to sign along with someone I didn't recognise who turned out to be Rouwen Hennings.
