Favourite ever captain?

Following the thread about our next captain, who is your favourite from down the years?

Steven Caldwell for me. Instantly made captain as soon as he signed at the last minute of a January deadline day, he was the ultimate leader and a big part of our promotion when Coyle seemed more interested in being mates with the players.

Specials mentions for Tom Heaton and Ben Mee too.

The 'worst' captain, for me, was Chris McCann. Howe made him captain to convince him to stay, but he was never captain material and he was soon replaced with Shackell. A great player before his injury, though.

I spoke to Cotterill on the day before we signed Caldwell. He told me he would be our next captain if we got him. I asked why and he just said it was so obvious when speaking to him that he’s a leader. He eventually replaced Thomas as captain and Cotterill was right about him. Without ever being demonstrative it was so obvious he was captain and the other players did and still do have great respect for him.

Worst captain In my living memory I'd say was Shackell.

I know a number of the lads on the books at the time weren't exactly heartbroken when he decided he wanted his Derby payday shall we say.

From the captains we've had since I started following it was Steve Davis.

He's been scrubbed from the title for obvious reasons so the title goes to Tom Heaton.

I have vague memories of us only getting him in the first place due to issues he was having with (an)other player(s) at Derby. I think they've left by the time he went back.

Tom Heaton. Ben Mee a close second

Leaders on and off the pitch
Genuinely good blokes
Never less than 100% committed
And I doubt you'll find any Burnley fan anywhere without anything but good words to say about them both

Martin Dobson would be the obvious one in my time of watching but a shout out to Ray Deakin in the wilderness years

I never met him but the story CT tells about him reportedly sat alone at a table tearing up beer mats during a fans night, an evening designed as a "Meet the Players" event and to thank the fans for their support is very telling.

Also revealing is the glorious reaction of the commentary box when he gave away a penalty and scored an own goal as we tupped Derby in 2016.

Oh heck, it's worth posting the link to that bit of fun footage. Bashley, Phil Bird and Luke Juke laughing at Shackell's misfortune:

Steven Davies - believed to be a John Terry/Wayne Bridge situation.

Shackell was a good player for us without a doubt but I think it is more than fair to suggest he wasn’t popular in the dressing room.

His return for Derby in 2016 was the first game following the launch of Up the Clarets. My report headline was Ram-Shackelled.

My immediate thought was Dobson. More recently Davis and Heaton.

Not favourites because none of us ever saw one of them and it’s a dwindling number who saw the second - but Tommy Boyle and Jimmy Adamson were our two title winning captains.

In my years Jimmy Adamson, Brian Miller, Dobbo I think were pretty good

Caldwell. Led by example and you could actually see players looking to him during the game for leadership. Absolutely a top quality captain.

Ben Mee was a leader of a different kind, but a leader all the same.

Massive Heaton fan, my favourite ever claret keeper. Top keeper, top individual, but his job was made easier by having Barton running the show in midfield. Best captain we never had really was Barton.

Caldwell is the best example of a team captain I’ve ever seen for Burnley.

Adamson. As a Championship winning captain and the general on the field, in the days before everything came from the touchline, has to be number 1.
Dobo was different class. Two titles, one from midfield and one from CB.
Caldwell, a magnificent leader without being a top player.
Sad how short of leaders we looked last year and I hope SP is looking to bring some in, doubtful, or puts more responsibility on those already here.

After that Dobson closely followed by Ben Mee.

Davis, Heaton and Mee spring to mind. Proper Captain’s. Hopefully Parker will see the importance of the role and allocate accordingly.

I always thought Graham Alexander did well.
I guess my favourite, however, would be Martin Dobson.

My first thought was Martin Dobson.
Then I thought about it and believe Steve Davis is my favourite of all time. I really believe he helped in the renaissance of Burnley into the modern era.
I am so sorry he got the Coyle bug and departed.

I’m old enough to remember quite a few, but for me Ben Mee probably edges it. Not just for his obvious leadership qualities on the pitch but also the way he dealt with high profile issues such as Etihad plane in a global media age.

One of only two captains to win two promotions for us, alongside Dobbo, and yet many still seem to think Steve Davis was the captain at the time.

Steve Davis was my first captain when i properly started going home and away under Stan and i used to love his marauding runs driving through the middle of the pitch so i'd say him.
