Imagine telling your younger self that our potential 1st choice FBs would be Brazilians

Mad. I remember how novel it was that Wigan had the "Three Amigos" in the 90s and that was just 3 Spanish players.

Seems like a nice lad, good interview and good to hear him talk about setting the standard in games and imposing ourselves on other teams.

How many of our squad don't speak English?
It sounds like there were cliques in the squad last season possibly due to groups based on different languages
Hopefully Parker attempts to get on top of that, we cant have seperate French, Spanish and English speaking groups.

Goliath, have you tried not being so negative? I'm not being horrible, but it does make for a happier life, and those around you feel the benefit too.

Indeed. Best thing i ever did was learn to assume the positive. Gives you a better outlook and far less guilt when someone or something does turn out shite as you can cut it off without guilt

For all the criticism we’ve seen of our recruitment, i don’t know think language has ever been an issue. It was striking they nearly every overseas signing we made under Kompany appeared to have excellent English in their unveiling interviews. From memory only Vitinho had to use an interpreter.

Not certain but I'm sure there were a few that struggle with English. I can't remember but don't think I've seen Benson Zaroury or Amdouni speaking in any interviews.

It's just an observation which links in with the idea of cliques in the dressing room. How do you get a close knit squad if they are all speaking different languages.

Benson, Zaroury and Amdouni have a good grasp of the English language.

I'm sure there are cliques in 100% English speaking football squads.

Zaroury - https://youtu.be/LXwwUyicbhs?si=5rpb6d72Jxucp075

Benson - https://youtu.be/hRpnYOTW7uw?si=X_fqTA6kJQi4GAaX

Amdouni - https://youtu.be/tuMtYGXi2dY?si=wimISPd9I4BX2Bbx

I’d say all three had more than enough to get by from day one.

Zaroury's English is very good for a lad who, as far as I know, had never spent time living in a country where he had to speak English. He might have improved his English at his club speaking with non-native speakers.

And apart from most of our time under SD, how many PL clubs only have English mother tongue speakers?

Cliques can occur in any group of human beings all of whom share the same language. Indeed, it happens very often.

Fair enough, like I said I'm not certain who does and who doesn't speak English. Esteve definitely used a translator in his and Assignon, Fofana's English also wasnt good so that's probably what's brought it to mind being our most recent signings.

Again though the point stands, I don't think it's ideal to have French speaking cliques in particular which I believe is what happened with Kompany.

We've always had a British core to our squads who have helped lead, but the further away we get from the Dyche reign the less that seems to be the case. This idea of just signing players from all over the world and hoping they gel is a risky one.

All of this talk about translators and the language barrier is a little bit of an overreaction. Let's not hold Parker being a cockney against him too much!

I said this a year ago and the response from many was, “it’s fine because Kompany speaks 5 languages.”

It’s not fine. We need team unity.

Goliath - over the years this board has been full of pleas to shop abroad as better deals can be made etc. etc. Isn't he Brazilian ? They speak Portuguese so no danger of joining a French clique. It's natural our french speakers would want to talk to their french mates in their native language at some point - it doesn't make it a clique. Was there an English clique ? If you want foreign players who speak good English your'e shrinking the pool. We need players who play good football. Your comments smack of a strange prejudice don't see the top clubs worrying about an English core as they field mainly foreigners.

Bobby Robson instigated a team dinner when he took over Newcastle from the disastrous Ruud Gullit.

The rule was simple. You turn up, everybody speaks English, you all get along.

Team spirit is immensely important.

It’s about creating a team spirit and togetherness. Speaking a common tongue makes this so much easier.

It doesn’t exclude foreign players but they need to be making strong efforts to learn the language. It’s near impossible to bond with people if you’re incapable of speaking with them.

Exactly this. I have no issue with us signing foreign players but there has to be a core. Not just random people thrown together every year from all corners of the Earth
I doubt we'd have done so well under Kompany without that core that he inherited.

We've seen it so often at this club, think of Alexander and Caldwell under Coyle, basically the whole dressing room under Dyche and the few Dyche players that stayed under Kompany. It's not all about the language but without it they can't communicate properly. I think it's as much up to the dressing room to maintain discipline as it is the manager and that's why signing good characters is so important.

I've worked in countries where apart from the pleasantries, I haven't been able to speak the lingo, but you know what? Putting in the hard graft with a smile on your face bonds you to the groups of people you work with. And it's the same the world over. You don't half come out with some nonsense on here.

Yes, good points Goliath.

A few other points: Yeah, if you sign Pele or Messi and they don't bother learning the language you can live with it. There are exceptions. Every squad can afford one or two misfits but it's got to be seen as sub-optimal. A united dressing room where everybody gets along is usually a key ingredient in being successful.

Another thing to say is that it's a lot easier if there are go-betweens in the squad who are happy to help out translating. They don't need to be fluent but they need to prepared to bring people together. If you've got a bouncey and sociable squad member who has a smattering of French he can help link social groups together and this helps to reinforce motivation to keep learning more English.

Sadly, this is where our world renowned inability to speak foreign languages works against us. You'd ideally want an elder statesmen member of the squad to take this role but finding a 30+ established English footballer who speaks another language is going to be a rare find.

Nonsense? Good grief.

Guess what? I spent 7 years working in France. I had to get by with a smile for a long time too. Not being able to speak the language when I first arrived limited my social circle massively and was a constant barrier.

Learning the language opened it up massively and cut down massively on misunderstandings, leading not just to a wider social network but also being able to have fulfilling friendships and relationships from top to bottom as well as making my work many times easier.

Not only is this common sense, it's also good manners to learn the native language. Even if you're no good at it, people are going to be far more forgiving if they can see you making an effort.

You have clearly never played sports.

Assuming people get along because they speak the same language is almost hilarious as suggesting everybody needs to get along to win games.

Cuckoo land stuff, you have 30+ people in a dressing room and you really believe they all love each other? Holy naive

Not acceptable really. Surely there needs to be rules around this. Dyches spin wheel would come in handy!

I think there was an expectation that everyone would be like Cornet who came in and looked to be absolutely brilliant in the dressing room and settled immediately. Him and Barnes looked to have a great relationship.

Unfortunately not everyone is as extroverted as Cornet and most probably find it a bit more difficult to come in to a new dressing room speaking in a foreign language for the first time. Especially with most of them being so young.

There have been four or five depending on whether you include JBG.

Pires has said that he was aware of this before the end of last season. Looking like Parker isn’t having much say on recruitment.

I nearly name-checked Barnes because if he had spoken French it would undoubtedly been a big help in helping the squad to come together. You need characters like that.
