Long John Baldry was the tallest person to have a number one hit until overtaken by Mr Blobby, another godfather of British Blues

When I was 15,some 58 years ago, I was introduced to his music by a friend of mine and we both joined his fan club. I bought most of his albums but never got to see him live until he played at Bridgewater Hall Manchester about 5 or 6 years ago. My hero from yesteryear was sitting by himself at a desk in the foyer surrounded by his cd’s etc and I plucked up enough courage to relay my story to him to which he replied “OH” ! A bit disappointing really but I was still happy to have had the chance to meet him in the flesh.

Yes - RIP one of the "fathers of the British Blues" and someone who helped develop a lot of musical talent.

I wonder how many gigs he's played - must be many thousands given how many years he was performing.

Blues from Laurel Canyon was the album of his that I first got into, I only ever managed to see him live once when I was at uni sometime round about 1969 - at the old Sophia Gardens venue in Cardiff. I also saw (P Green's) Fleetwood Mac there round about the same time (Long John Baldry, Duster Bennet and BB King on the same bill!). Both gigs c 10 bob each entry (=4/5 pints at that time).

So many top guitarists passed through his band onto great things.

I always thought Mayall didn't get the recognition he deserved.

He was one of those that his fellow musicians would give recognition. It was the wider world that failed.

Bit like that player in the team you think is overshadowed by everyone and yet they all pick that team member as the vital cog.

a giant of blues. bluesbreakers (beano) will always be one of my all time favourite albums but he did so much more.

the guy was basically a music factory.

I saw John Mayall when he was touring with Peter Green.
