Re: Lucas Pires
Great ball though for the first. He seems to have already become our "dead ball specialist" and corner taker with a very cultured left footWoodleyclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 9:47 amHow on earth did we manage to sign such a talented gifted player.?A superb debut.
Re: Lucas Pires
Was a bit shakey at times, but understandable as it was his first championship game. Thought he looked assured and with an eye for a pass.
The dead ball specialist cannot be underestimated at this level, hopefully we will score a lot of goals from set pieces this season. Was really impressed with him.

Re: Lucas Pires
A bit shaky yes, but let's face it, if he was the complete all-round accomplished player, he'd be somewhere in the PL, not with us.
Yes looks very assured and a great passer, as we saw with that brilliant ball for Josh's opener.
He'll be fine.

Re: Lucas Pires
2 assists from left back in his first game is outstanding. Wonder how many Charlie Taylor had in a season ? And I liked Taylor a lot What a signing he could be. Don’t know what we paid or his age ?

Re: Lucas Pires
I thought that was about as superb a debut from a Brazilian left back away at Luton you could ever wish for. That is probably one of the biggest eye openers to English football someone like him could ever have as a debut, and he was largely faultless. A couple of times he got caught in behind when he pressed high up, but nothing we didn't handle. His ball for the first goal was top tier and a great cross from the corner too. Looks an absolute snip at £1.9m, and only 23.
Re: Lucas Pires
Let’s not get over excited after one game. He had a magnificent debut and we all hope he continues that way but plenty of players have had great debuts then faded.

Re: Lucas Pires
He is 23 and reportedly cost under 2 million. Sounds like he had some disciplinary issue with Santos and was sent to Cadiz on loan. He looked very happy last night to me and Vitinho can hopefully do a great job making him feel at home

Re: Lucas Pires
He looks like he'll be perfect for us this season as he's more a wing-back than an all out defender.
We're going to be on the front foot for most games this season which suits him.

Re: Lucas Pires
I saw on Pires' insta this morning that the game was screened in Brazil and had a Brazilian commentator. I'd expect that in the Premier League but not the Championship. Found it quite staggering the reach football has, but great hopefully attracts a bit more Brazilian interest in the clarets now we have two players.ClaretAndJew wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 10:51 amTwo Brazillian players in the Burnley starting eleven.

He can defend so he's an upgrade on Maatsen
Re: Lucas Pires
Bit of a silly comment that, let's be honest. Pires has all the potential to have a very good career though.

Re: Lucas Pires
If it's okay by you and after the dross we endured last season, I think I'll take a chance on getting over excited by one of the best debuts I've witnessed from a Burnley player.
Outstanding pass for our first goal and despite the occasional blip he was my MOTM.
Roll on Saturday, I'm actually looking forward to getting down to Turf Moor again instead of dreading it.

Re: Lucas Pires
Hopefully people can finally see the limitations of Taylor as a modern day full back. His assist record was shocking. We now have a left back who can actually bring something in an attacking sense, and looks like he can defend as part of a unit too. Great debut.

Re: Lucas Pires
Obviously early days, but on last nights showing he looks to have real potential and to say he cost £2m and Maatsen cost £30+m it is looking like a real steal.
Fantastic work by the recruitment team.

Re: Lucas Pires
On first viewing I thought he was quite a different player to Maatsen - not as quick, nor as high octane/adventurous, but a slightly steadier presence. If anything, of recent Burnley full backs he reminded me most of Matt Lowton - his strength appeared be prompting from a pretty orthodox full back position, picking good, intelligent forward passes into runners (most obviously for Brownhill's goal, but this was evident a few times), comfortable playing out in tight spaces and choosing well when to get forwards on the overlap. Defensively he was exposed by the hurly burly of Championship football a few times but I suspect as he adapts he'll manage that just fine - and certainly if he has Esteve alongside him in that backline he'll be fine. Overall I thought he looked a promising addition.

Bit of a ridiculous comment given he’s gone on to play for Dortmund(and appeared in a Champions League final) and now Villa. Actually thought Pires struggled defensively at times however his passing and set pieces were very good.

Re: Lucas Pires
His playing out of tight spaces is something that stood out for me too and you could see this in the friendly he played in. He has good feet even if he did get exposed defensively a couple of times. It’s his first game in a new tough league. The assist for the first was sublime. A great addition.

I don’t think anyone has said that.helmclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 1:06 pmIt's the recruitment strategy at work, that most of you agreed with Checketts isn't effective...
Not even checketts. The whole premise was that it doesn’t work in building a successful premier league team.
I don’t think anyone at all is saying we shouldn’t sign young players this.
They are saying we shouldn’t sign 15 of them in one window and expect it to be a success.
We need a core of experienced players and young flair brought in to compliment them.
Right now it doesn’t really matter as we are not a premier league club. But I hope when we are we have learned these lessons.

Re: Lucas Pires
Agree with this. Whilst it was a great pass for he opener his corner was decent but O’Shea’s header was better and made it a good cross.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 1:01 pmBit of a ridiculous comment given he’s gone on to play for Dortmund(and appeared in a Champions League final) and now Villa. Actually, many of Pires’ corners/free kicks weren’t great and didn’t beat the first man.
And defensively he looked very suspect.
But a good start and hopefully he will grow into it and quickly realise how physical this league is.
Re: Lucas Pires
I just wonder who scouted this player and others we have got. Was it Knomany or who? If was not Kompany we need to keep hold of whoever it is.
Re: Lucas Pires
I thought overall a really good debt, I had no idea how good or bad he would be, but enjoyed watching him for the most part, he definitely got caught out, but our covering play dealt with those potential issues. Will of course be watching as we carry on, hopefully, he can keep up that kind of performance, one would assume having more time with the squad can help to even improve on that performance.

Re: Lucas Pires
I noticed a couple of things, firstly - very forward thinking. I liked his dead balls. His touch seemed hit and miss. Sometimes he was excellent in small spaces, but at the same time when defending a corner (think) he failed to control the ball, chased it and then knocked it out for a corner under no pressure.
The poor touches if memory serves correct was in front of our fans - so may have been debut related nerves.
Obviously, he’s come up with two assists and in the main looked pretty solid and quite a distance from ‘flimsy’ in his defending.
But I would say he’s very promising and looks to be a bargain. So far
