Me and my wife are heading down to Norfolk for a few days next week (chasing the sun) and will likely make stops clockwise around the Norfolk coast.

We’ll have our cocker spaniel with us.

Particularly looking for recommendations of nice beaches and other places to go with a cocker.

If we were to head to the Broads for a day, any particularly nice places to position ourselves?

Holkham Beach without a doubt. Lovely walk from Wells on the coastal path or you can park near Holkham Hall.

Blakeney is nice as well.

There’s a nice circular walk from Horsey Windpump to the beach. Horsey Beach has a large seal colony.

The beaches go all the way round the coast and are lovely. Maybe 100 miles worth?

Sheringham is worth a visit for a trip on the Poppy line Steam train. (Dad's Army filmed there )also tank museum nearby .then you could move down to Cromer .

Cromer good beach and cliff top walk to Overstrand (passing by the golf course which has a periscope on the valley floor for players to see if anyone is on the green above them)
Any of Sheringham , Clay next the sea, Stow Mill, and lower down the coast, Southwold and for a trip on the Broads = Oulton Broad to Beccles. Or from Great Yarmouth to Berney Arms Windmill.

The Crab Hut at Brancaster is a must if you like fresh seafood.

Cant really go wrong with the beaches down that way.. always tend to stop at the granary in wells just a great central location for going up and down the coast.. worth also visiting Walsingham inland for something a little different - priory - religious miracle site - not actually a religious person myself - but theirs something about the place

Been to North Norfolk for hols 6 times in last 10 or so years. Its our happy place.The last four have been in Wells Next The Sea . All recommendations from all other posters are good .Some of the best beaches in the UK- our favorites Holkham and Brancaster. Its one of the best dog friendly areas in the country. If you like eating fish let me know and I will give you the details. One was voted top seafood restaurant in the UK this year, though you may have left it late for reservations. We have stayed in Blakeney twice (and "done it" now) as its quite quiet with only a couple of eating places, but Wells is larger, with a lovely high street and half a dozen quality restaurants/pubs

The walk from Thornham to Holme is one of the best walks anywhere - esp with a dog

Brilliant walk from Sheringham to West Renton over the cliffs then on the beach to Cromer. Have done this with our own cocker spaniel, brilliant.

Go and watch Ashley in Norwich.

Depends what you want.

Holkham Bay is vast, amazing landscape. Great for dog walking. Holkham Hall worth a look as is Sandringham if your passing through en route / back.

Wells-next-to-sea more tradition, good for families. Classic beach huts.

Brancaster good for families.

Cromer is traditional, victoriana seaside, small. Crabbing

Hunstanton. Pier and fairground. Bit dated for me, stick right and toward Old Hunstanton.

Not Norfolk but if you can travel that bit further try Southwold in Suffolk. This has everything: fish N chips, proper pubs, brewery (Adams), beach, peer etc etc. It's brilliant IMO.

Hi John. Your recent thread about electric hook ups in France: I forgot to add to take a circuit tester some French sites are not fussy about wiring. Not a difficult job adjusting them as there are only 3 max.

As mentioned above, Old Hunstanton the one to head for. The beach with its dunes is great, especially with a dog.

Plenty of ideas put forward for you JD, I can’t offer anything extra, but can say the weather forecast for the next week or so in that area is glorious, and it will be so take sun cream!

Go to Wroxham and hire a boat for the day. There's plenty of operators but you'll need to book in advance.

You'll just about have enough time to see the ruins of St Benet's abbey and climb the tower at Ranworth broad

Used to go to Hunstanton every year with the kids for a week or 2. Brilliant place. If you go West on the coastline ( I know that sounds daft because it should be North ) you get to the sealion colonies.
Also Cromer is a decent place and so is Sheringham.

Am I correct in saying that Hunstanton is the only place on the East coast where the coastline faces west ?

Wroxham for boat rental, jd. Do your homework beforehand so you know what to expect.
For a bit of culture try Great Yarmouth. It's like Blackpool for cockney types.

Thought I’d drop a few ‘point and press’ photos from our first two days here.

Since leaving Leeds yesterday morning, we’ve managed to fit in the following:

Sandringham Estate walk

Heacham to Hunstanton seawall and back

Old Hunstanton beach and huts

Thornham to Holme coastal path and boardwalk with beach walk back.

Brancaster and its lovely crab hut!

Drive through Wells

West Runton to Sheringham along the beach with fish and chips at the top of the Beeston Bump at Sunset, before walking back along the cliffs.

We’ve walked in excess of 30km and I include a photo taken just now of Rosie, our nearly broken working cocker spaniel. She’s having the best time.

Thank you to all those of you who have offered such lovely suggestions. You’re truly blessed to live in such a wonderful place: we’ll be back!

Have had numerous family holidays in Norfolk .
Some at Xmas with 20 plus family members in two semi detached houses at Brancaster
The fish and chips from Frenchies ( hope it is spelled correctly ) at Wells and eaten across the road by the harbour we’re amazing

Any suggestions for some places to go (with the dog) near to Acle? We’re thinking of moving south for a day. Probably go as far as Horsey Gap on the coast and then come inland towards Acle and the Broads. Just looking for one or two nice dog friendly suggestions for that area before heading home. Thank you

Ranworth is nice and has a circular walk. The Fur and Feathers in Woodbastwick is the Woodfordes brewery and serves nice food. Could walk to Salhouse Broad from there.

Good walk along the Wherryman way past the Barney windmill into Great Yarmouth or Caister. Nice little detour to Berney Arms station but can get very waterlogged if you go between Berney Arms and Acle.

Yesterday we did:

Weybourne

North Norfolk Raikway

Holkham to Wells through the forest and back along the beach

A bit more of Sheringham

Weybourne sunset

We decided that very spontaneously that yesterday would be our last day in Norfolk.

We visited Holt centre and the station at the end of the NNR

We did East Runton to Cromer on the beach with the dog, walked the pier and ate doughnuts!

Travelled to Happisburgh to have a look at the famous red and white lighthouse

And then headed to horsey gap, whilst the beach goers were heading home, to watch all the seals and their young (probably a couple of hundred) making their way back onto beach for the evening. It was a fantastic way to end a great four days away.

We then drove through Acle via the national trust pumping house and caught another nice sunset before making the four and a half hour trip back to Ilkley. Having done Norwich away a few times, I suggested to Mrs jdrobbo that the roads would be friendly at this time and thankfully that proved to be the case. A good trip home and back early this morning.

I’ve lost the charger for my cocker spaniel though: Rosie is absolutely shattered! She had the best time.

Thank you to everyone who gave such lovely suggestions and helped me to plan a nice getaway for us both at such short notice.

Some dark ale from Woodforde's that I don't think they do any more.

Glad you enjoyed it. I moved here in 1996 whilst in the RAF and I never left! Love Norfolk!
