Never been diagnosed but I once saw a list of 24 signs and I had 20 of them.
Useless at school as the speaking voice sends me to sleep but if I could have read the lesson I’d have been fine.

I was diagnosed with autism in my forties.

It's never too late.

Never felt the need. I don’t see how it could improve my life. For a short, fat, talentless, nerd I’ve had a great life, blessed with a wonderful woman beside me.

To understand yourself and discover what makes you who you are can be a very fulfilling journey. To truly appreciate and embrace diversity can only help you understand and better tolerate others.

Having been in his company on a night out , I could have told him 15 years ago , good that he’s ok with it and putting it out there.

I was diagnosed with ADHD during Covid at the age of 37. Been on Xaggitin XL ever since and to say it’s been life changing is an understatement. Charlie Austin said in the article that he wonders what life might have looked like if he was diagnosed in his early twenties and I feel exactly the same.

Always important to not look back with regret, as we cannot change what is done. Look forward and know what we can do

Autism maybe not but ADHD can be improved through many treatments such as medication. I’ve had nothing but issues with social anxiety, low self esteem and a lot of that comes from my absolute financial mismanagement in my twenties mostly caused by lack of confidence, drive, spending impulsively and generally not being able to sit down and concentrate on sensibly budgeting. Within 3 years of my diagnosis I’ve managed to become relatively debt free and save to the point of recently moving into my own house with a mortgage that looked absolutely impossible 5 years ago.

On the other hand, it could be argued that the best way to embrace diversity is to accept that we are all individuals in our own right, not necessarily needing to be labelled as part of a "type"?

I don't need to discover who I am - I am Me. My own unique person, diverse from everyone else in the world.

That’s a noble sentiment, but for people who are neurodivergent, a diagnosis can really help them understand why they are as they are. There has been such stigma around some of these conditions that that in and of itself can be destructive. To know that your behaviour really is driven because the receptors in your brain that handle dopamine are wonky can be a game changer.

My wife has ADHD, in a sense it’s what makes her as great at her job as she is (she’s a chef) but understanding what triggers the sometimes destructive or impulsive behaviour has made a huge difference to the quality of her life, and my understanding of it all has meant I can support her so much better.

We’re now on the road to a probable autism diagnosis. Again, understanding why her brain works as it does, I just see the anxiety and stress fall away from her and a confidence in herself grow. And when those gremlins do appear, we deal with them so much better. Literally game changing.

Yeah, we are all different, but for some people there are real medical reasons for this, and if understanding these things improves that persons life like I’ve seen in Mrs RM then more power to them.

That would explain one or two things about him that we’re not allowed to discuss on here

I know others with adhd who’ve had the same issue he had

Good on him for getting a diagnosis and opening up about it

I have just done a couple of online test, both suggest I might have adhd and require further investigation.

Not going to bother as my symptoms don’t bother me.

Every single one of us is autistic in some way or other imo. I suspect that's why they call it a "spectrum".

Think long and hard before you attach a label or a badge to yourself, people.

They can be useful but they can also be limiting.

In of themselves, labels are like art.

All labels are useless.

For some of us, whether it's autism or ADHD, a diagnosis is important, as it helps us to understand ourselves and why we behaved in a certain way on certain occasions, compared to how most people would.

Charlie Austin obviously wishes he was diagnosed earlier too.

My eldest Daughter has ADHD and a diagnosis is / was important for her. I'm sure if I was at school now I would be diagnosed with it too. Now in my later years (much later!) it is not important to me as I can't change how my life has been and all in all I'm pretty satisfied with how it has been.

In my experience and in line with views on this thread, some people find it helpful to receive a diagnosis or label for their experiences and some people don't.

However, a couple of key things: a) I think it's important that as much as possible people are given the choice and autonomy to seek out a label for their experiences based on their own circumstances and whether they feel it will be helpful. And b) each person is an individual in their own right, regardless of whether they have a diagnosis or not. They shouldn't be viewed and understood purely by the label.

Good on Charlie for sharing his story. No doubt others will find it helpful.

I didn't mention labels but yes you could be right. We are all different so a diagnosis may benefit some but not others

Nope
That’s incorrect

People say it without really understanding autism

Plenty of data available on the internet for you if you’re really interested in learning about it
