Reading Stoke fans' views on him on their forum The Oatcake is discouraging to say the least !

3 bookings already this season bhf. I think we are in big need of a tall centre midfielder. Should help with our achillies heal of defending set pieces in the Championship.

He is a big man in the middle of the pitch. Something we were lacking.

Experienced player. We definitely needed some of those.

The big, tall man in the centre we needed was Billing, although I’m not sure if he’d have been interested in coming or if Alan would’ve sanctioned a move.

Pleased with this. Leader, physical presence.

After a year of players swanning around the pitch not remotely interested in putting in the hard yards, this is exactly what we need.

Should be fine as a squad player. Obviously he'll now be playing with better players than he did at Stoke. That will make some difference.

He hasn’t picked up a lot of bookings generally in previous seasons

Solid signing.

I’d take what opposing fans say with a pinch of salt. It’s how that player fits into our system and with different players and coaching. (See Arfield and Huddersfield fans).

Where are people getting hard working from? Stoke fans don't seem to think that from what I've seen.

Looks like Parker’s picking horses for coarses rather than a scattergun approach.

Particularly interested in him and Worrall being captains.

Leadership, standards, strong communication ……. don’t underestimate the importance of them.

How many times have we complained about being lightweight in the middle of the park and we're in essence bullied winning precious few headers and second balls, Parker has identified this weakness and addressed it. Really pleased.

Idk, but would imagine with Cullen, Brownhill, Hannibal and Massengo all ahead of him, imo, he's here as a solid back up, and we are likely to see very little of him.
Still happy with the signing though, we need a solid squad.

Now all SP has to do is create a team that compliments a still talented squad. It will take a bit longer than tomorrow.

I don’t know or recall that much about him but hope he’s an alternative (back up) to Cullen as we don’t have another like him imo. Brownhill, Hannibal and Massengo are all energetic, box to box types. Cullen dictates the tempo of a game and is much more disciplined with his movement, so hopefully he is abke to cover that role.

Maybe those 'bang average' players you mention will have pride in wearing in wearing our claret and blue shirt rather than jumping ship at the first sign of trouble?

You would rather have a bang average player who has faux pride in wearing the shirt than a good player who doesn’t care about the shirt but is actually good?

Weird

Nothing like writing a player off before they’ve pulled on the shirt!

TBH, I would rather we had a "bang average" season with "bang average" players if it brought some stability.

Well, I think there is more to football than the premier league for a start.
Did you enjoy last season, watching players you obviously consider better than we have now getting battered?

What makes leaving Burnley "jumping ship" but not leaving Stoke?

Any player who steps on the field in a claret and blue shirt has to care I don't care who he or she is. Haven't you been following last season's debacle?

You have a point, but isn't that the prerogative of Stoke fans to moan about?

What players do you think care about the wearing a clarets and blue shirt, as opposed to a blue and white shirt?

None, it’s their job they care about money.

Also “she”?

I don't think it's a problem at all, I just think a bit of perspective is needed if people think it's a mark of bad character that some of our players wanted to leave for better offers

For now. As soon as it becomes a financial burden (pretty soon if we don’t go up) we won’t

I agree.
Just making a silly point that we don't need to care about loyalty or fans' annoyance at perceived lack of it.

Fantastic interview. This could be the best signing of the window for us, not just on the pitch but off it too. He really wants to be here and be successful.
