The Football results being read out on Sky sports on Saturday evening, it was terrible they had some woman reading the results & it was that bad, it was like a 6year old doing it, the last part of all the teams was missing she was like ....Burnley 1 Blackburn 1, instead of Burnley 1 Blackburn Rovers 1, her voice was so bland, or she dosent know the full names of the clubs ...example 2...Leeds 2 v Hull 0, she needs to be got rid of very fast, totally clueless in my honest opinion,,,,bring back Alan Lambourn.

Sorry, I genuinely don't get this. I guess you're implying that the OP is complaining about the announcer because she was female and is therefore a bit of a mysigonist but he could just as easily have said "some bloke" if it was a man. Your comment does come across as a bit of virtue-signalling ..the OP is entitled to his opinion.

As a rule, when writing, I tend to use a name that makes it clear who they are, so it’s Manchester City and Manchester United and similar with the Bristol, Nottingham & Sheffield clubs and it’s always Bradford City. Otherwise it’s Leeds, Bolton, Wigan etc.

Or the OP could as easily have just said "the announcer" and then made their point.

If they are paying an hourly rate I think there's a lot of value in losing a few unnecessary 'Uniteds', 'Cities' and 'Albions', and reducing the time it takes to read the results.

There was an occasion in 2022 where Lambourn said Peterborough and not "United" after it, so maybe its a corporate directive and not the announcer's choice?

But then, you wouldn't be able to have a go at her if you accepted that premise, i guess

exactly, as most people do, if it doesnt need clarifying, the extension is normally dropped

TBH we all know the results, you just check your phone, get the announcer p1ssed and hide their glasses, now that would brighten Saturday night up.

clearly its teams that dont need their extention in order to know who it was. Lets not get daft.

people are scared of change, i get it. it must be upsetting for them to not hear the full team name read out.

It was the lack of inflection in her voice that irritated me. You can normally guess which team has won/drawn/lost after the first team has been announced but not on many occasions this time.
Think she needs a bit more practice. And my comment would apply equally to a male announcer with the same problem.

Interested to know if she missed the full name of any team that it actually matters for, such as Sheffield or Bristol.

I reckon most of us know who Leeds are or else should we not go the full way and say - 'Leeds United Football Club 2 - 0 Hull City Football Club' (Need that 'City' bit in there in case anyone mistakenly thinks Leeds only scored 2 past a rugby team).

With Sky Sports providing minute by minute coverage of all the games on telly, their website and their app as well as highlights online shortly after full time, why does anyone need to hear them being read out in the evening? It's a relic.

Now I'm a fan of Talk Sport but their reading of the results is invariably poor. Seems like they are just trying to get through them as quickly as possible. Rarely a pause, so I'm not always sure of the detail. If it's during a Saturday programme, I've heard wrong names, they sometimes lead with the away team, sometimes the 'bigger team'.
For example Liverpool beat Manchester United by three goals, Arsenal failed to beat Brighton in a 1 all draw.
Football League results are dreadfully quick and there is no composure to the reading out.

It’s Nottingham Forest and not Notts Forest

While I’m here it’s Wetherspoons and not Witherspoons
I know I need to get a life :D

Part of my childhood was the jingle and James Alexander Gordon's voice on the other side.

You used to be able to guess the result based on how he said it but it caught you out once or twice.

Going slightly off topic, I'm sure I watched something when he retired about how he got the job and I think he sort of fell into it if I remember rightly? Someone might be able to put me right if I'm wrong.

I did. She was bloody awful. No tone at all to her reading out the scores. Absolutely all done in a monotonous drone, with no increased tone at all to tell us for example, that Villa had scored 2 away at Leicester. After she said Leicester City 1, her tone stayed the same, suggesting she was gonna say Aston Villa 1. Awful, just awful. Yet the Sky Soccer Saturday host introduced her like it was a big treat for us all. I’ll watch the scores on mute from now on, on Sky.

I've been trying to find out (without success) what has happened to Alan Lambourn, I'm not aware Sky has ever acknowledged/referenced his absence, which seems slightly 'odd' given how long he's read the results on Soccer Saturday.

Personally I greatly miss his voice, he was the last of the proper announcers, in the mould of James Alexander Gordon, Len Martin and others mentioned on this thread. Simon Thomas read out the results the first couple of weeks of this season and was poor in comparison (I'm not a fan on him full stop) but Pien was even worse last Saturday, her voice came across as though she was just reading off a screen without any interest or awareness of the actual result.

And although at 48 I don't consider myself either old or young, I do like to hear clubs given their full names once in a while, to me referring to them merely by the place name is 'dumbing down'. Similarly, I don't tend to watch half-time studio chat or pre-game build ups, but I did catch abit of Daniel Sturridge on Sunday and thought how poor his diction was. It's nothing to do with age or complaining for the sake of it, in most walks of life there are times it's appropriate/fine to talk chav and there's times to talk proper. But that's increasingly the way of things, pandering to the chavs (and I fear that Sky have got rid of Alan Lambourn for the same reason).

It's taken a while. I've always thought that Liverpool were just a bunch of slots.

Agree with a lot of the above, though. Talk sport goes too fast, and the new woman on 5 live was stilted monotone.

I genuinely don't understand this argument at all: "you had to think what the scores were going to be" - but she tells you the scores. And the scores are on the screen anyway.
