Your Best 'Loan 11'

Simple really, pick your best Burnley team made up of players who were just here on loan. So, the likes of Sam Vokes and Ben Mee wouldn't count as they went on to sign permanently.

Here's my stab at it. Had to go 4-1-3-2 because I couldn't think of another CM, so Johnson would be in the number 10 role.

GK: Andy Marriott
RB: Rhys Williams
CB: Taylor Harwood-Bellis
CB: Gary Cahill
LB: Ian Maatsen
RW: Nathan Dyer
DCM: Eric Djemba-Djemba
ACM: David Johnson
LW: Jacob Bruun Larsen
ST: Gerry Creaney
ST: Andy Cole

Marriott
Williams THB Cahill Maatsen
Djembe-Djemba
Dyer Johnson JBL
Cole Creaney

I've just googled Creaney. After retiring as a footballer, he qualified as an accountant and is married to a Scottish film director.

Yes.
He seemed to have the ability to hang in the air when he
came to take a cross, superb handling.
Good shot stopper too.

I thought that would be too easy, so just asked for players who never signed permanently.

How would Tony Morley fit into that criteria. Started with us but came back on loan in 1988. Didnt sign permanently after that loan

Just seen your edit. I remember as a kid my dad telling me how great it was we had him on loan, remembering all the great stuff he'd done at Villa etc. Didnt really work out unfortunately

I remember a particular piece of brilliance in the Cambridge match. He was standing in front of the Longside and received a pass, played the ball first time between two Cambridge players who collided with each other. The crowd loved it. Morley could be brilliant for one game and fairly anonymous for two or three. He became more consistent at Villa.

I'm not sure about Valois. Did you rate him? He wasn't on loan, anyway.

That one is easy - he didn't do well enough on loan to warrant a place.

David Johnson made his debut two years later in a Sunday night TV game against Preston. He scored. Game was more famous for Bertie Bee and the streaker!

Already been mentioned but Nathan Dyer, David Johnson and Eric Djemba-Djemba were immense for us. All three felt too good to be playing for Burnley at that time.

Indeed he was, but in his defence, he was converted to a midfield player which is why his goals dried up after his initial loan spell as a striker. Good player, though.

That’s it- David Johnson, thanks! But I’m sure we had another player make his debut that night, like Wright or Gazza- a big name that over shawdowed DJ’ debut

I would have thought the income generated from the Wembley trip would have been more a contributing factor to that. Reeves last game was march 88, we didnt sign Winnie until october 88. I dont know that but thats just a gut feeling

edit. and in between we brought in players like Brendan O'Connell, Paul Atkinson & Gary Rowell.. and probably more that Im not remembering
