I've always liked him, great squad player and another option with experience.

Decent back up if the likes of Ekdal and Beyer are long term.

Defo back up. Makes sense given our lack of available defenders.

Hmmm.

Hadn’t realised he’d missed most of last season with an Achilles injury.

Bit of a worry for a 30-something.

He was linked with them for definite but that's while he was still training with us

Unexpected. He's come in as backup. If his body allows him to, he'll be a good squad player and a good influence in the dressing room. Josh Cullen will know him well and I imagine SP possibly/probably spoke to Dara O'Shea about him.

SP will have seen him play as an opponent on a number of occasions.

Guess that’s why he’s had all pre-season with us to prove his fitness and the deal is only until the end of this season?

Another good character and leader for the group can only be a positive. Obv hopefully he can contribute on the pitch too.

Clearly a solid addition on paper.

Just saying that it’s a particularly bad injury to pick up towards the tail end of a career.

Be surprised if we see much of Beyer this season. Ekdal always seems to be injured as well.

Nothing personal, but if he was that good Sheff Utd would have retained him. The other negative is it shows that our current injured CBs are a long way from fit.
He's got the experience though, and should be a solid back up, I wish him nothing but good.

We know Beyer won't play this side of the next window which will take him past a year. You're right about Ekdal, seems to pick up injuries almost on a regular basis.

Watched the interview after posting. The club's medical team has had time to assess him. He's had time to see SP, talk to him, get a feel for the club. Let's hope it works out.

Good solid player, definite a bias now towards almost Dyche like players, good characters, great professionals but they will play with more flair.

Match. Egan Riley was our 3rd choice on a few occasions he looked like he was going to cost us the draw. Maybe he’s better at full back!

Silly comment. A bit like Brentford fans saying if Ben Mee was that good Burnley would have retained him.

Agreed. Plus it would appear we're getting back to a squad we can connect to. I for one, couldn't connect to most of Kompany's squad.

No it isn’t.

Do you think we don’t do our homework?

Do you think we don’t engage the services of medical professionals to ascertain the fitness of potential new players?

Sadly there’s an air of negativity on here but this is a solid signing without a doubt. Always been a decent player, good team player, good work ethic, a proper professional player. We’ve needed this type of signing for quite a while. A captain without an arm band.
Well done Burnley, and well done Scott Parker.

Solid signing for the squad and potential to be an excellent signing for this level if he can get anywhere close to the player he was for Brentford and majority of his Sheffield United career. I know he's had a bad injury but we've had a long enough look at him to find out if he can be a positive addition.

He was the player I wanted us to sign to replace Tarkowski when he left. Not the quickest but by no means slow and a very strong dominant centre half who is a threat in the opposition box as we've seen against us!

For no Egan-Riley isn’t big enough to play centre half. However I think he has ample room for improvement at full back inverting into the midfield , and possibly moving forwards in his career to covering the midfield too. The more he plays the better he will become

Not quite the same thing though. Ben hadn't been out all season with an ACL.

Just so things are clear:

a) We should have tried everything possible to keep Ben

b) I think signing Egan is a good thing.

Er no. I don’t think for a minute that we’ve signed a player that there are genuine medical concerns about, but unless he’s secretly
snuck in a dozen Championship games since he came back from injury, neither he or the club will know if he’s lost anything at the level that matters.

Egan has a lot of experience and a good reputation. The fact that he’s taken this long to find a club might tell a story in terms of concerns potential suitors might have had.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying he’s a bad signing, but I don’t think it’s too outlandish to wonder what impact a serious injury might have had on him at almost 32.

I hope it’s had zero impact and he’s an integral part of a promotion campaign.
