Just pre-empting the “Trafford - 5 - Slow in possession”
comments to point out that he’s playing to instructions.

Desperately missed Flemming today and I fear if he isn't available or another player that can link play in central areas of the pitch in the opponents third then we will see many performances like today.. It was my biggest fear going into the season and why I upgraded the window from a 4/10 to a 7/10 after we got Flemming over the line.

We also haven't replaced Tella (yes, I'm well aware that he was on loan), and Zaroury's replacements aren't anywhere near as good with the ball at their feet as he was.

Trafford 6 - largely redundant, did what was needed
Humphries 6
Egan-Riley 7* - looked comfortable on the ball and made a great block/clearance to stop them nicking one
Esteve 7
Pires 6
Cullen 6
Brownhill 6
Hannibal 6
Koleosho 7 - only player who looked remotely likely to create something
Sarmiento 4 - struggled to make an impact and missed a great chance
Foster 5 - looked isolated

Egan-Riley 7
Esteve 7
Pires 7
Cullen 6
Brownhill 6
Hannibal 5
Sarmiento 5 all the skills but pointless if you then don't create anything
Koleosho 6 no end product
Foster 4 VK said he was our best player 😂

Rodriguez 5
Hountondji 4 league 2 at best
Anthony 6

Played some decent football but we aren't creating anything in the final third

Let’s say it straight….that was very poor. I understand Oxford played like that because they knew they couldn’t match us but we are so slow, laboured with not a massive amount of quality in our squad. We complained about Dycheball but I think Parkerball could well supersede it.

Trafford- 6. Didn’t need to do much but what he did he did well and swept up a few times.

Humphreys- 7*. At least he looked to try and go forwards when he had the ball
CJ- 6. Again what he had to do he did well
Steve- 6. See above
Pires-6. Played well first half but then very quiet second half.

Cullen- 7. Looks to get on the ball and get us going forwards. Massively missing someone next to him.
Brownhill- 4. Goes missing in games far too often and gives little to no support to Cullen. Why is he still on set pieces?
Hannibal- 5. Couple of nice touches but that was about it.

Sarmiento- 5. Has to do better with his chances.
Koleosho- 6. Tries really hard but always one step ahead of our forwards
Foster- 5. No support and little service.

Anthony- 6. Looked sharper than the Pompey game
Hountondji- 5. Not sure still on him
Jay- 5

I like Brownhill a lot, especially in this division, but he shouldn’t be captain.

Trafford 7 how some have scored him low today I don't know. Had little to nothing to do and what he did was neat and tidy, including a neat header out of play in the 1st half on a rare Oxford break.
Humphreys 7 worried to see his name on the team sheet beforehand, I needn't have worried. Steady.
Esteve 8 MOM the captain without the armband today, led by example.
Egan-Riley 7 quite comfortable at centre back. Unassuming which seems to make him a poor defender in some people's eyes.
Pires 7 possibly his best game since Luton, albeit against a side who only sporadically attacked.
Cullen 7 might not have been his best day, but head and shoulders better than the other two central midfielders.
Brownhill 5 he's hot then he's cold, today was a refrigerator kind of day.
Hannibal 5 need him to take the game by the scruff of the neck, he's got it in him.
Sarmiento 6 some bright spells but a terrible miss.
Koleosho 7 remains our brightest creative hope, but as with his inexperience learning on the job and his decision making/final ball is hit and miss.
Foster 4 needs a spark or a rocket who knows which, but poor again

Anthony 6 effort was there and looked more willing than last week.

By far the best thing about today was chalking off another ground for me.

Trafford - 6
Humphreys - 7
Egan-Riley - 6
Esteve - 6
Pires - 6
Koleosho - 7 - why doesn't he go outside more regularly - is he under instructions not to?
Cullen - 6
Brownhill - 5
Sarmiento - 5
Hannibal - 4
Foster - 4

Anthony - 5
Houtondji - BAD miss

Overall, boring. Manager's pattern starting to concern me.

A thoroughly tedious game, mainly due to Oxford having no interest in attempting to win the game and us not having anyone with the guile to find a way through. Despite being completely one sided, this is the beauty of the championship, where, just as last week, a newly promoted team has a decent chance of getting something from the best teams in the league. It’s far more enjoyable being in a competitive division again.

Trafford 6 nowt to do

Humphreys 6 centre half playing at full back and it shows

Egan-Riley 7 fine, did well to be alert on the floor and clear late on

Esteve 7 hardly tested

Pires 5 he plays some really strange balls that put us in danger more than once

Cullen 7 metronome

Brownhill 6 nothing above the usual

Hannibal 4 does well to get past people then has no idea what to do with it and loses possession but he’s playing too far forward really. Nearly gifted them a winner through being too casual in the wrong place.

Sarmiento 5 has to bury the most gilt-edged chance of the game

Koleosho 7 only player to test their keeper and a few decent runs where his final ball was a bit lacking

Foster 4 struggles when he’s up there on his bill and they’re sat in deep

Anthony 5 meh

Get Roberts back in at right back and Flemming in for Hannibal and we have a better football team. Shame we’re having to make changes every week but thems the breaks. Whilst we have to do better against teams like this, they’ve had a good day playing at their limit whereas we’ve not been at our best and have a lot more potential growth in us.

Trafford 5 Nothing to do but what he did was at a snail’s pace.

Humphreys 6 OK
Egan-Riley 6 pretty assured
Esteve 6 OK
Pires 5 He doesn’t look up to it. Will improve with games hopefully.

Cullen 5 the crab
Brownhill 4 looks leggy, awful technique
Hannibal 4 play him as a midfielder instead of Brownhill.

Koleosho 5 he took his man on to the byline once and we nearly scored. It was only once, though. Very raw still. Pace but not much else.
Sarmiento 4 poor man’s Zaroury.
Foster 3 nowhere near good enough. Overweight. Lazy.

Anthony 5 should have started

Pires getting scores between 5 and 9 really does emphasise how we all interpret and see things differently.

I quite like him, think he will get better the more games he plays. Unfortunately many fans think he should be another Ian Maatsen, but he’s not.

Trafford 7-impressive at coming out of the penalty are when Oxford played it long
Humphreys 6-unfair on him to be playing RB but did not let us down. One great saving header towards the en
Egan Riley 6-nervous to see him start but he did well, with one amazing clearance towards the end when he was on the floor on the goal line. He saved us a point
Esteve 7-generally very composed and quick
Pires 7-he got round the pitch
Koleosho 8-best player on pitch setting up two great chances
Cullen7-our most creative player
Brownhill 6
Sarmiento 6-did ok in the first half. Not sure who is better -him or Anthony. Missed a good chance second half
Hannibal 6-thought he had a quiet game
Foster 5-saw little of him. The way we played did not suit him, but he missed a great chance

Trafford - 7 - Did everything well.
Humphreys - 7 - Steady enough. Positionally, a little uncomfortable when probing forwards, but looked otherwise good.
Esteve - 7 - Nothing major to do but coped well with everything.
Egan-Riley - 7- Hardly put a foot wrong.
Lucas Pires -6 - Some nice touches and one very heavy one which he got the corner for.
Cullen - 6- Not quite as effective as we're used to.
Brownhill - 6 - Quieter than normal. Not sure this midfield 3 works especially well. Perhaps they'll gel.
Koleosho - 7* - The main outlet with lots of work and reasonable end product despite nothing much to lay it on for.
Hannibal - 6 - Quieter than usual. Not sure he even got under anyone's skin.
Sarmiento - 6 - Not a lot coming off for him and a disappointing miss which really would have established him.
Foster - 5 - Is he ever going to develop into a lone striker? He can't play with his back to goal in this system. I was disappointed with him.

Anthony - 5 - Not much of any note.

Another decent point away from home. I didn't enjoy watching it. Oxford had no intention of attacking but had every intention of diving with every opportunity to disrupt any flow. We still had a few decent chances. If Sarmiento scores that chance then the game changes and I think we win comfortably.

This is football. Nothing is a freebie. Being hard to beat will give us every foundation to move forwards when the going gets tough. We were a little like this under VK and far worse under Dyche until getting onto winning runs later in the season. Give it chance. Give it time. I still think we need someone with more presence at #9. Lyle is more of a runner from outside the area.

I quite like him, think he will get better the more games he plays. Unfortunately many fans think he should be another Ian Maatsen, but he’s not.
Pires looks more like a left winger than a left back, defensively he doesn't read the game.

From tv
Trafford, ER, Humphries, Esteve, pires all 7. The back five all did enough to keep a poor Oxford team from scoring
Hannibal 5 a couple of classy touches but not enough to affect the game
Brownhill 6 worked hard but another game where his role was difficult to identify
Cullen 7 our best,(only) midfielder on display
Sarimiento 5 one of the many light weight winger type players we've had at Burnley during the last three years
Koleosho 8 mom, some moments of brilliance but still needs a more consistent end product
Foster 6 I genuinely feel sorry for him. He runs a lone path up front against three big centre backs, most of the time with his back to goal. We have to change our tactics to give him more support (bopefully Flemming can fill this role, otherwise we are not going to score many goals)
Anthony 4 totally anonymous

Very disappointing display against a poor team. Our midfield isn't functionning at all, Foster is totally isolated up front, we only looked dangerous when Luka turned it on now and then. One shot on target against a poor team, was it? We have to change our tactics and somehow get more power and guile up front.

Pires getting scores between 5 and 9 really does emphasise how we all interpret and see things differently.
He did ok….but how anyone could’ve watched that game and thought any of our players rated at 9 is really quite incredible.
