The lack of decent championship podcasts

Post by dandeclaret » Thu Oct 03, 2024 7:47 pm

Am I missing a good one?

Second tier is a pair of lads who love whinging, making massive reactionary hot takes, and didn't even know if Burnley and Preston was a Derby or not this week..... their knowledge appears paper thin, and it doesn't even cover every game. They also appear to be in love with Leeds united.

Not the top 20 podcast - tries to be analytical, but doesn't hit the mark - usually pretty dull, and they seem to have an irrational dislike of Scott Parker for some reason.

Is there a good one out there that covers the whole division?

I personally think NTT20 is great, they at least do some research (unlike Second Tier) and don’t just search for clicks.

I used to listen to ‘The Championship Chat Podcast’ which was alright too, give that a whirl.

No. There’s the 72+ 5Live one, but it’s like a lot of the BBC football podcast output - shallow, matey banter.

The NTT20 pod is as good as it gets. I don’t mind it, but it does feel like I’m listening to two public schoolboys pretend to like football.

Definitely a gap in the market.

Keep meeting to listen to the Champiomship Check-In. Bloke that does it pops up on my X feed a lot.

Benjamin Bloom did some alright content the last time we were in the Championship. Not seen any of us stuff this season, mind, and as a big Ipswich fan he may now be doing more Prem stuff.

The Second Tier has really deteriorated. They absolutely hate Parker.

I've quite liked the Second Tier podcast over the past few years. I first started listening about this time in 2022, and kept with it last season despite us being in the PL.

As Tsar alludes to though, I do feel it has gone downhill slightly, with a focus that expected goals is the absolute be all and end all. I'm sticking with it for the moment, more so if we keep grinding out wins as the season progresses - the two lads will most certainly have egg on their face if Parker gets a team promoted for the third time.

Loosely started the NTT20 this season but not enough to offer much of an opinion on it.

As with the Second Tier, I listened to the Championship Chat podcast too in 2022, but found the former better entertainment at the time.

Ben bloom is still going which his championship content. He seems pretty switched on. I enjoy watching his stuff.

There is “What the EFL?!”. Not listened to it in a while though.

Second Tier feels to have gone downhill since moved to Stak network (same group of the Football Ramble), and I’ve often just skipped through the pod.

I've been listening to Second Tier this season. It's surprising how little coverage we get given we're currently in second, I'm not sure whether that's because we've just come down and they aren't that familiar with Burnley or because they really don't like Parker.

It is entertaining listening to them trying to reconcile their gushing praise of Leeds to the reality though.

I’ve a feeing it’s the latter as VKs Burnley was mentioned every week during 2022/23

I recall Second Tier predicting Luton to finish top this season and winning at a canter. That's obviously going well...

And last night a discussion on whether the manager should be replaced after 8 games.... hot takes galore.

Second Tier are desperately trying to flog their patron scheme so only focus in depth on half the games and expect you to pay for an extra hour covering the remainder instead. As has been said they hate Parker with a passion so for the last few games we have been dumped behind the paywall. Their hot tips of Coventry and Luton are not going too well either. I’m another who thinks Benjamin Bloom and Sam Parkin are pretty good. I also like the Turfcast prematch programme where the opposition fan who comes on is usually pretty erudite. I loved the Plymouth fan admitting to a dislike of all things Clare and blue which involved some Scunny skullduggery as well as our 1990s successes at their expense.

Im a cynic, but if i was running a 2nd tier pod, the punters id be keeping sweet are those whose teams are likely to stay in the league

No wonder we get jack

Fair point, probably why they spend so much time talking about Leeds.

I listened to Second Tier this season on the back of the football ramble as it’s an assosciated pod and I was expecting something similar but it’s a million miles off, really poor.

I don’t mind BBCs EFL 72 but coverage is more spread out across all 3 leagues.

We all complained about it but Second Tier podcast does seem to have nailed "Parkerball" fairly accurately.
