Benson and Zaroury

The 3 wingers we have at the moment aren’t a patch on Zaroury and Benson’s performances in the Championship under VK they show odd flashes but seem unable to beat their man apart from an odd time.

Yep.
And how much have we committed for Bashir Humphreys? £12m?!
Who sanctioned that?

I’m biased because I’m a big fan of Zaroury but I’d rather have him than Koleosho at the moment.

He’s a left sided centre half playing at right back.

So our £12m centre half isn’t a better option at centre half than Egan-Riley (who did OK) when Roberts was available to slot in at right back?
Frightening. I haven’t seen anything like a £12m player in him yet.

Interesting point this. We have a right back who was in PSV's match day squad last season nowhere to be seen, whilst we play Egan Riley at right centre back (a position Humphrys would be more comfortable in) - who was on loan at PSV but ended up in the reserve/youth 'B- team' squad. That feels a little odd to me and I'd be interested to understand why Sambo isn't being considered. Both his involvement in an all-conquering PSV squad and previous season as a regular in a defensively sound upper mid-table Eredivise side at Sparta Rotherdam suggest he has something about him.
As for wingers, Benson would clearly have added something today if fit but our biggest problem is that - like Zaroury- all our wingers are happiest off the left.

The difference is that Benson and Zaroury had Maatsen and Vitinho playing behind them...!
Imagine Anthony and Kolosheo doubling up with Maatsen and Vitinho instead of Pires and Humphreys/Roberts.
Big gulf in class between this squad and the one VK had....! Unfortunately, 8 or so of the better players from VKs squad were unlikely to make it to the PL for various reasons.
Saying that no one can disagree that Benson and Zaroury would have added a touch of class to proceedings today.

People still wittering on about that busted flush Benson? He’s a one trick pony that’s offered nothing for 18 months.

Benson? Nah.
But I'm missing Zaroury. What a player. Expected him to push on a bit. It's in part to how we played which enabled him to be one to one with a defender. That doesn't happen much with Koleosho and this system for whatever reason.

The problem we have is we can only attack out wide. When they are all off it, like today, there is no plan B.
Hannibal hasn’t been the same player he was at Brum although his work rate and ball winning are bonuses in his favour.
Brownhill isn’t a ball carrier and Cullen gets a nose bleed over the halfway line.
Koleosho has been awful since his goal at Bellend Rd and I include the remainder of that game. He desperately needs a couple of weeks off. The international break would have been perfect but I expect him to be playing age group for Italy.

I’d take 10 million for Koleosho no show right now . Headless chicken

I think we looked slightly more threating when Roberts came on as he’s definitely better at coming forward than Humphries and hopefully will overlap to give more space for whose playing RW .

We’ve bought Humphreys?
Holy sh!t, I was consoling myself in that he was a loanee. Terrible today.
Plays like a loanee, like he’s scared to get hurt. Anthony is the same, or actually worse in that respect.

What is the point in the benson and zaroury argument, zaroury didn’t want to be at the club, so was moved on and benson is injured.
Sarmiento has had one game from the start so can’t be judged yet.

Did we have a Plan A? Wasn't aware of it or maybe it just passed me by? Lots of things do these days.

Looked to me like he was playing under strict instructions not to cross the half way line. In fact
much of the team appear to play under strict instructions.about where not to wander. Doesn't lend itself to free flowing football by any standards.

Off topic a little but I can categorically tell you that even if we were to meet BH's performance clauses, of which there are some, you are still not looking at anywhere near 12m. It's more like half of that, if that. That is all.

If I was to some up Manuel Benson in two words it would be 'odd flashes'
Scored some good important goals but always injured and very inconsistent

It's all very well rubbishing Benson but most wide players at this level are hit and miss. I don't believe that with Benson and Zaroury in the side we would have been producing such a paucity of chances and just 5 goals in 8 games (counting Wolves). The current squad has only Brownhill and Sarmiento who have scored this season. The service to Foster is so poor that the only time he looks threatening is when he comes deep and tries running at them. Parker is "taking the positives" which are in essence the clean sheets and nothing else. And there won't be many of them when sides realise we carry little threat going forward and they might better set-up to attack than defend. And out of all these injured players, who is actually going to create and/or score? I would have said only, er, Benson.

That's interesting seen as the last team that we played that sets up to really attack and not defend was Leeds and we erm... beat them 1-0...

Well that's one game and we rode our luck a bit as we have in too many other squeaky bum results. Sorry I forgot Koleosho as the scorer in that one.

You writing him off already? He's a 21 year old left sided left footed centre half playing right back with a new team and still doing a job.

Zaroury was never the same after he came back from AfCON. Koleosho is on a different level.
Benson - who knows - he’s injured too easily

It is likely NOT to have been Parker, and I doubt he has been directly involved in any of the others apart from maybe Anthony
The signings this summer have been pretty poor apart from the commitment to signing Esteve and the potential of Flemming
Whoever heads up recruitment needs to answer some hard questions

I don't believe Laurent, Hannibal, Sarmiento, Egan, Pires and Worrall were poor signings when you take account of the fees paid and what we had available to spend. Then again, pretty much everything you say about our club has a negative angle.

Bloody hell, some of you lot need to move on.
Zaroury had a great half season with us which fizzled out. When he didn't get a look in under VK in the PL, he went to Hull and did nothing there He had excellent purple patch for us when he arrived, but people seemed to be think he has been amazing for the last 18 months which just absolutely isn't true.
Benson I think is a one trick pony. Provided some amazing contributions in his brief stints 2 years ago and will always be remembered for some cracking goals. But he is chronically unfit or injured, he cannot do a full 90, throws his toys out of the pram. Recently he just seems so disnterrested. Trying to be subbed off in the dying seconds against Rovers when we needed to throw everyone in for to the mixer just really summed him up for me at present.
In summary, if we could take these ladd had the same form of 2 years ago they'd walk into the team. But they haven't got the form nor have they made anymore progression in the last 18 months. Koleosho has much greater ceiling of potential than either of them

Is that the game where he sustained a serious leg injury that’s going to keep him out for a few months.
