Climate Change - It's getting Worse

'Life on planet Earth is under siege. We are now in an uncharted territory. For several decades, scientists have consistently warned of a future marked by extreme climatic conditions because of escalating global temperatures caused by ongoing human activities that release harmful greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, time is up. We are seeing the manifestation of those predictions as an alarming and unprecedented succession of climate records are broken, causing profoundly distressing scenes of suffering to unfold. We are entering an unfamiliar domain regarding our climate crisis, a situation no one has ever witnessed first hand in the history of humanity.'

With populist governments becoming more likely in Europe and the possibility of another 4 years of Trump the scientific evidence is likely to be denied for foreseeable future. Very worrying times for our children and grandchildren to inherit.

I think a better sample would be over a few hundred thousand years ,the samples being used are over too shorter period, come back in a thousand years and prove the Global warming sceptics wrong.

The planet is still not even at the average temperature of the 12th century! All our official weather records date back, at most, to the 17 and 18 hundreds just after the mini ice age. I know they have done tree ring sampling, but the further back in time you want to go, the smaller the sample size and the fewer locations that are available for comparisons.

No-one is denying that the climate is changing, and for many areas of the planet not for the better, but computer modelling still cannot get the climate to what it actually is (from what I've read, they cannot get the Sahara Dessert to be where it is), so one has to question the forecasts arising from these computer models.
Life will adapt, people will adapt, Where they live, where they grow things or make things may have to change in the future, who knows? The doomsayers? The deniers? Sceptics? Scientists? None of them really know what the future will bring and nor do I.

It’s sensible debate that’s needed . Nobody doubts the earth is in a warming cycle , be that 25/100 or a 1000yrs . We’ve over populated the planet and viz a viz stripped its resources to very low levels .
People moan “ oh but China /India /etc “ but they have to make all the cheap consumer tat the world screams for .

It’s been politicised beyond reason , so ends up at the level of 2 groups of people chucking sh1t at each other across the street .

There lies the issue. I don't know anybody normal that doesn't think the weather is changing. A significant number of them however are disengaged, largely because of the disaster scenarios constantly portrayed by the exaggerated modelling. The world had five years left thirty years ago, I understand the hyperbole back then to get 'climate change' on the agenda but they've reached, 'the boy who cried wolf' levels of world ending predictions and deadlines. All of which have passed.

Won't happen on here (or pretty much anywhere where a layperson is given the same weight of voice as an expert)

Despite pretty much every scientific body in the world all agreeing, more than half of the people on this thread are telling us the experts are wrong

In all seriousness it’s not going to matter one jot what we do in the U.K.

I used to believe all of the global warming stuff until I visited the city of burning tires in Kuwait. After spending a lot of time in the Middle East and Asia there is nothing that can be done at all to stop the rising emissions.

It would certainly help if we stopped cutting down trees for solar sites though haha

I’m thinking all the current government are doing rather well at styling out there climate change response over much less substantial results
The exploding of trillions of tons of ordinance too
Current armies on a footing for all out war in 3 years
Maybe the Nuclear winter will save the planet
Populists governments are more inwardly looking and whilst they may happily burn coal etc to keep the home fires burning they’re less likely to champion the causes that lead to global Armageddon, well imo anyway

I bumped into a climate doomer at a family wedding some months ago. He was quite evangelical about how we only had four or five years left. Later that evening, I asked the DJ to play Bowie's Five Years. The DJ point-blank refused and said it wasn't appropriate.

Over 1900 scientists and professionals have a different opinion to the 1 that is repeatedly shoved down your throats on the TV, Internet or newspapers etc. They may be wrong but at least give these scientists the opportunity to argue their scientific reasoning with scientists who hold the opposing view that humans are causing climate change.

What amuses me is that some of the global parasites such as Bill Gates, King Charles, Prince William and countless other world leaders, politicians and celebrities who regularly tell people to reduce their carbon footprint, fly all over the world in their private jets whilst living in enormous mansions and palaces. They even fly to COP conferences in their private jets   and still people swallow their lies. These scumbags are laughing in our faces.

It has to be a worry because climate change will have many knock on affects, but it irritates me that the blame is put on what man does, rather than how many men there are.
As long as the population explosion continues, trying to alter climate change is ******* in the wind.
You can try as many green initiatives as you like, but anyone with 2 or more kids has failed.

it's an emotive subject for many, but for many others it's just nonsense, however even those saying it's nonsense must be able to see that change is needed as we can't go on indefinitely like this, but they don't care because it won't effect them.

It won't effect me, or my children, however it may effect my grandchildren later in life and definitely my great grandchildren, how much is that effect of remains to be seen.

I believe there is enough evidence to start making meaningful changes in the near future that will slow down and reach a state of equilibrium if put into practice. However, this needs senior political powers to enact the changes. Unfortunately, these same people have only one main concern, staying in power, or getting into power, the said changes are not conducive to getting into power or remaining in power, therefore not much will change in the next 10 years, and probably not that much in 25 years.

It will unfortunately need a few rather serious disasters to happen, in order to change the populations minds, and consequently the politicians stance to what get's them in power, until then they will pay lip service, small adjustments will continue, but little change will be effected.

It needs to get a lot worse unfortunately. It's a global issue and consequently requires much more than local implementation.

The worlds population in the 12th century was just 1/2 a billion , it’s now north of 8 billion , the effects of climate change on peoples ability to adapt are consequently much more limited , a village of people can move to an area with water a city of 10 million can’t

Living in Florida we have recently witnessed 2 severe hurricanes. Milton was very unusual in so far as it formed quickly not in the Pacific or Atlantic oceans but in The Gulf of Mexico.
Normally Florida gets 2-3 weeks notice of possible hurricanes. With Milton we got 2-3 days ! The eye passed directly over our house and Orlando.
I am not a scientist and have no idea what is causing global warming ( now called Climate Change) However I have researched Cloud seeding and HAAP and I suggest anybody who is worried or interested in global weather to do the same

There's absolutely no question the planet is getting significantly warmer, and rapidly. Whether it's man made or we are in warming cycle is open to debate. However many countries are spending untold billions for no reason other than getting on the 'bandwagon', so to speak. USA, China, India and Russia are the worlds worst polluters, that's a given. Three of the four appear to have little or no interest in reducing pollutants into the air. The fourth on the list only 'talks a good game' in the hope it buys a few votes.

The problem is that the crisis moves too slowly compared to the human lifespan, which leads to complacency and apathy. On top of that there will never be a clearly defined tipping point; fine today, disaster the next. Just slowly, slowly getting worse.

One thing that is very predictable, if you think economic migration was bad, just wait until you see climate migration.

This is it. You and me bringing in our own cup to the coffee shop or using a company that plants a tree for every ton of carbon it produces isn't going to make a blind bit of difference in the face of there being an actual 25000 sq ft neverending burning mound of tyres in Kuwait or simply China and India existing and doing what they are doing.

Or maybe as the quote about bankruptcy goes , gradually then suddenly . If the predictions about certain tipping point such as the Antarctic ice sheet breaking up or perma frost melting are correct things might get much worse within a persons lifespan

For some bizarre reason, individuals happily use the wonders/breakthroughs of Science every day for things like connecting to the Internet, travelling, taking medicine, consuming media, etc., but as soon as it comes to something that may challenge their world view or their little bubble, it becomes n=1, subjective views or putting their 'faith' in pseudo-science/conspiratorial whack-jobs.

Human activity is clearly changing the climate more than what would be 'natural'. To deny that is to deny reality.

The thing is, as existential forces go, we do not have way bigger problems. Maybe it’s about how we as humans perceive those risks and threats, but they are very real, and very serious.

Good post CC.

I'd be amazed if so many people entered a hospital for treatment and declined expert input in favour of the youtube/'I do my own research' pseudo-science types. But for some people it seems that logic goes out of the window when it comes to some wider societal issues.

We have way bigger problems in the world and in America than climate change. But it appears only climate change is classed as non political and can be discussed on UTC
We don't.

We may individually have other concerns - as an individual, community or country - but Climate Change is so fundamental to everyone on the planet.

It is non political. There's no division on political party lines. It is above that.

A nuclear war is a potential happening. It's been lingering in the background since I was young enough to be aware of it. I had nightmares about it. It could happen and of course it would be catastrophic.

Climate IS happening and WILL BE catastrophic, unless we do something about.
