January transfer window priorities

Few games to go before it but obviously work will be going on behind the scenes.

Goes without saying a striker should be top of the list of priorities. Also an attacking full back would be ideal.

Any other areas?

Creative ball playing central player.
Goalscoring wideman
Striker
Attacking full back

We can improve massively in all of these areas. Getting all 4 would be unlikely but if we can get 2 from 4 it wouldn't be too bad.

With the current ownership of the club it is financial gain.

If we don't improve the ball into the box then another forward would be a waste of time, even Erling Haaland wouldn't score in this team, the supply into the box and our play in the final 3rd is what's wrong not who plays upfront

It’s got to be a striker for me.

We have Redmond, Tresor and Ramsey to come back in (should they all be ready by the time of the window?)

Really, they should be able to solve most of the problems that I think we are seeing.

We are desperate for a proper forward,I fear we won't make the play offs let alone automatic without one, we simply cannot go on being this poor in and around the box.

In all honesty we have spent too much for a championship side already. Especially on players who aren't good enough to step up.

Only buy a player who could play in the prem after 5 months with us. Nigh on impossible to attract them sort of players though.

Let's hope the injured players make a big difference.

Right wing and striker. Maybe one of the returning injured players can fill the winger role however.

Signing a decent striker in January for the right price will be a difficult thing to do however.

Perhaps playing 2 strikers in the championship might be a good option in a 4-4-2 rather than 1 striker being crowded out by 11 of the opposition like yesterday. 16 corners yesterday and a Burnley player got his head on it once.

We should just go in for a striker. The squad is already big enough and in all other positions there should be enough quality so that promotion remains the number one objective.

I’m still to be convinced that we have or will achieve value for money on some of the bigger transfer fees paid this summer.

Just been studying fixtures and it’s an unbalanced window in the season.
Although on Jan 1st it is 24 played 22 to go by the end of January, when most deals are concluded, it is 29 played and 17 remaining.
We need to have Morgan Whittaker in as soon as possible and a line leading CF who scores goals.

I cannot imagine the owners at Plymouth sanctioning the sale of Whittaker in January given their precarious position in the league table and the backlash that they would rightly receive from Plymouth supporters. If we did manage to secure the signing we would end up paying well over any realistic valuation for the player.

This season so far

Morgan Whittaker 3 goal's in 12 league games

Koleosho 2 goal's in 11 league games

Brownhill 5 goal's in 12 league games

I wouldn't waste my money on Whittaker

Think for me, theres something that needs to change in tactics/mentality.
We need someone that will break the lines. Laurent seems to be our most likely source of a slide rule ball between two defenders to turn them.

We’ve not turned a defence all season. Its all slow slow slow and the oppo have time to retreat.
Redmond might run behind. Tresor might be able to find him.

Sometimes it seems like new players have this in them when they arrive and almost coached out of them.

McNeil was one. Cornet was another. We look dangerous. Then they start doing what the manager has bored them into doing. Think Fleming is another. We’ve took a good player and turned him an anonymous player based on yesterday

We just seem to be set up to a point where we’re relying mistakes/ individual brilliance game after game.

Two strikers are a must. One to start and one off the bench. One has to be a known quantity and not some moneyball signing. The creativity angle depends on the status of the injured lads. I'd hope both Ramsey and Redmond are up for playing so it really is down to the physical standard. Redmond is way too good for this level so would be positive he can make a substantial difference.

The bench yesterday was dogshit so I would love to know what is happening with Tresor. Was massively unimpressed with his attitude last season - pulling out of challenges and not competing pisses me off. I don't care how much ability you have, it is a team sport and you need to be honest and share the defensive workload. I would be quite happy to see him sold but let's see it determined and move him on if necessary. Tresor out means another signing is necessary.

I think if we can get rid of the “must have a first touch before doing anything else” mindset, especially in and around the 18 yd box, I’m pretty sure we’d get more goals with who we’ve got now. That’s not to say a striker wouldn’t go amiss….

Created a few yesterday, only dilly dallying waiting for the perfect chance to come along and good defending prevented us scoring.

Striker and a creative midfielder are priorities but whether the likes of Ramsay, Redmond will be up to speed...and whether Tresor and Benson are moved on, will have an impact. I'd like to think we're looking for a no9, maybe someone like Armstrong at Southampton who is capable of scoring regularly in the championship, even if he's on loan. I do think having Redmond and Ramsay will give us more options IF they can be match fit. I'd love Tresor to come good for us, but that ship has probably sailed now and I guess we'll never really know whether he's as good as his reputation suggests. Also, a fully fit Foster SHOULD be capable of scoring 15-20 in this league, but it's looking increasingly like fitness and the preferred 451 Parker plays doesn't suit him in my opinion. Strengthening in January or not will most likely make or break our season, especially attacking midfield and a no9. We also face a potential problem of having too many centre halves if Beyer, Ekdale, Delcroix, Worrall all become available and I would expect some of those to be moved on before any more major striker or creative midfielders are signed.

We created barely anything. A couple of blocked shots(which a different player wouldn't have scored)and the rest were hopeful long rangers or 1 in 50 headed chances from corners.

Which "chance" yesterday is put away by this magical January striker?

Depends what type of striker, but someone might have taken up different positions, or won balls we didn't yesterday, therefore the "chances" might have been different, easier or more frequent

The players not in the squad yesterday:-

1. When will they be fit?
2. When they are fit does the manager fancy them?
3. If the manager thinks they can do a job, who do they replace?

When these questions are answered then we can talk about what is needed in January, those decisions probably involve getting players out of the door to create space for the incomings.

Missing yesterday

Sambo
Worrall
Sarmiento
Benson
Redmond
Foster
Ekdal
Ramsey
Tresor
Beyer
Delcroix

That is one hell of a lot of players

We are severely missing a fast, good finishing, left footed winger to play on the right so Whittaker is a must. If the rumours are true that we had already agreed a deal but Plymouth couldn’t find a replacement, that may mean the player is on tenterhooks desperate to come.

Full backs with pace and creativity would be ideal, but realistically any further business would rely on horse trading outs then ins. I expect Trafford, Tresor and maybe Koleosho to raise some funds which would then allow the full backs and maybe a striker to be strengthened. We also cannot rule out silly season again where other players demand to go.

(I don’t think Parker would want to sell Trafford but I expect Howe to return and be too hot to turn down for either us or the player)

I have to disagree on the winger point. I think our main issue is we have too many left footed wingers full stop.

I’m not convinced another young winger like Whittaker is the answer for us and I feel for balance we need a right footed right winger. Maybe Redmond provides that when fit.

Tella would be my top pick.

I’d also like a technical attacking midfielder that can work in tight spaces and find final passes. I think that could be Ramsey if we can get him fit.

The rest I just can’t even begin to consider until we know what’s going to happen with injuries. Tresor, Foster, Sarmiento, Benson, etc.

I do agree about Trafford. I think Newcastle will come back in and with Hladky and Green, who came with positive results, and us generally looking pretty solid at the back, I would not be averse to us accepting a big bid if it meant we could strengthen elsewhere.
