I’ve just taken delivery of the autobiography Alexei Navalny - Patriot and it’s a very interesting read so far. What are you reading or have recently read that you enjoyed.

Stephen King wrote a couple of books for a publisher called ‘Hard Case Crime’

Later and the Colorado Kid

Enjoyed them both but discovered the publisher has released many books from many great authors that must sometimes fancy writing something different to what they normally write

Worth a look if you’re into that kind of thing

Also reading Never Somewhere Else by Alex Gray that I got for 50p in a charity shop

It’s Glasgow’s version of Rankins Rebus - worth a read

I have recently read The Shining, as I had never read anything by Stephen King before and thought I should give one of his books a go at some stage. Really enjoyed it actually, but a lot of differences to the film.

Currently reading Dr Sleep, although not seen the film version of it yet. Quite enjoying, but not far into it yet.

Edit - I had not seen Shire's comment before posting with his SK reference! Spooky times, must be nearly Halloween

Just starting "Cloud Cuckoo Land" by Anthony Doerr. Whilst not being the least bit interested in it herself, my wife is suggesting it seems very appropriate!

Unruly by David Mitchell, covers the early kings and queens up to Elizabeth 1st. Pretty good for a non historian about half way through it.

The Coffin Road by Peter May. I really enjoy his mystery/thriller books set in the Outer Hebrides and this is no exception.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson a true story set in 1890s America about the building of a world's fair interlinked with a serial killer lurking within the city.A fantastic read and unbelievable how the story is not more well known.Will add previous ly read Mist Over Pendle by Robert Neil aa fictional account of the Pendle witches you get a real feel and atmosphere of the times made better because you know the area it's about

Deconstructing Jack by Simon Daryl Wood. A thought-provoking read for those who have an interest in The Whitechapel Murders, but a bit of a trawl in places.

I read a random Ian Rankin book a year or so ago and really enjoyed it. I’ve finally got round to reading his REBUS series, so I’m currently three quarters of the way through ‘KNOTS AND CROSSES’… and it’s excellent. I’ve bought the first three.

Almost finished The Final Twist by Jeffrey Deaver. It's in the Colter Shaw series but not a patch (in my opinion) on his Lincoln Rhyme books. Next up is Gabriel's Moon the new William Boyd. Love his books.

Eight Miles High by Richie Unterberger.

It's the second volume of his study of Folk-Rock - the first was called Turn! Turn! Turn!.

For those in the UK it's not what you would expect. In fact the UK Folk-Rock scene is largely by passed. It concerns more about the US experience.

In the first volume we start with Dylan going electric at the Newport Folk Festival and what led up to that, and The Byrds and Mr Tambourine Man and the consequences.

The volume I'm reading goes on to Acid Rock, Country-Rock, a couple of chapters on the British scene, ending around 1970.

I'm not sure the books are that useful but there are some obscure musicians that may interest me.

Killing Thatcher by Rory Carroll.

An almost unbelievable story. Really well written. Gripping from start to finish. Finished it in 5 days.

If you are looking for something funny to read you cant go far wrong with, GOOD OMENS by Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman.

Maybe, but it's a long time since I read the Blackhouse trilogy so I can take it. He tells a good story and brings in interesting historical and geographical detail about the Outer Hebrides. Even though I've been up there I was unawatre of the Flannan Islands which feature in this one. I read a fairly wide variety of stuff..it's just that this is the book I'm on at the moment.

The fastest novel I ever read was Cornelius Ryan - The Longest Day. Finished it in 4 days on holiday one year.

Ken Follett - Fall of Giants

He’s an amazing story-teller, and with this one, the first of a trilogy, though 14 years old now, mixing the factual accuracy and protagonaists of World War One with a well-woven story.

Jeremy Bowen’s The making of the modern Middle East…very topical and written by one of the best BBC journalists in recent times. He’ll need to write a sequel soon though.

Brilliant book, it's also a very different perspective on the DDR than you get from say Stasiland

Yep...read the Germany one as prep for time spent in Berlin recently...money well spent even though Hawes tended to lump nearly all the condemnation onto the eastern side.
