Re: Gary Lineker
Could well signal he end of MOTD as Gary Lineker pretty much is the whole show and can't see how the BBC can adequately replace him. Will probably struggle on for a couple of years before getting canned but MOTD without Lineker is like football without fans

Getting in before the usual tired nonsense about him to say I thought he was a great presenter on MOTD and will be tough to replace. Mark Chapman is a good shout.

Perhaps this programme is due to go the same way as BBC’s Question Of Sport?

I wish Shearer would "retire". You could run a sweepstake on how may times in one programme he says "back of the net"!

Use to be a Saturday night staple but in an age where you can see the goals almost instantly on your phone (or at least before 6pm) it’s probably run its course

He makes an absolute fortune from his podcast company, and he can do most of the work from home.

Like Clarkson recently said about new Top Gear presenters - get some journalists/fans that are passionate and really know what theyre talking about - not some celeb nobheads that don't. Basically looking towards the YT generation etc

The whole show needs a revamp, far too much of him, too much analysis, and not enough action.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 7:41 pmCould well signal he end of MOTD as Gary Lineker pretty much is the whole show and can't see how the BBC can adequately replace him. Glad to see the back of him personally, and I hope he isn't replaced by another ego.

Re: Gary Lineker
He was very good but he's been in the role too long and the show went stale years ago.
Coupled with his pontificating, it's long overdue.

Re: Gary Lineker
Big loss imo. His podcast gets 8 million listeners a month so despite the gammons, he is incredibly popular. Love listening to his football stories and he’s a top presenter.

I believe the highlights show rights that the BBC have only allow a certain number of minutes of footage from each game.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 8:28 pmThe whole show needs a revamp, far too much of him, too much analysis, and not enough action.

Candidate qualification will be to deploy the glottal stop instead of pronouncing the letter T and no gerunds acceptable. That's the dumbed down BBC in a nutshell. Wish they'd just privatise it and relieve everyone of the license fee.

Re: Gary Lineker
A gammon .....
It is a win in Backgammon where the opponent has not borne off any pieces, resulting in a double win for the victorious player. How do you achieve a gammon? To achieve a gammon, a player must bear off all their pieces before the opponent bears off any of theirs.

Re: Gary Lineker
Excellent presenter. Personally I definitely still think MotD has it's place....it's a convenient advert-free one-stop way of catching up on all the Premier League games and the amount of punditry is about right. Mark Chapman would be an excellent replacement. The BBC need to avoid "dumbing down" the programme in the way they did Question of Sport (Paddy McGuinness FFS) and Football Focus ( with Alex everything-is-funny Scott)

60 years is a good run for a tv programme, I still watch it every week and look forward to it.
Definate London club bias though. But Linekar is fine.

Re: Gary Lineker
I record it and only watch the action. So won’t miss him or whoever gets his seat. As they are funded by the license they would save a fortune by going action only. The “experts” can’t agree amongst themselves so why should we listen.

Re: Gary Lineker
Lots of negative media over his million pound pay packet to present football programmes and persistently pushing the boundaries of the BBC's social media guidelines. He also became central to a boycott of programming by his actions.
I think he gave the BBC little choice. I haven't watched MOTD for years. It was just mediocre in a media landscape that gives you highlights and commentary on tap.

A turgid excuse for a football show anyway, full of self important pricks believing their own shite. A typical BBC show full of yes men and nodding dogs.

Re: Gary Lineker
I think match of the day is still a good addition to BBC portfolio. Many people don't have access to Sky and the programme is well presented and allows anyone to catch up with what is happening in the Premier league, FA cup, etc. I have no problem with Lineker or other members of 'pundits'. I hope that BBC keeps MOTD going and long may it continue with whoever is chosen to replace Gary Lineker.
Re: Gary Lineker
It’s all about opinion. To be honest I enjoy it, some of the pundits like Murphy and Richard’s are very knowledgable.louieollie wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 10:57 pmA turgid excuse for a football show anyway, full of self important pricks believing their own shite. Re: Gary Lineker
The beginning of the end for MOTD. It was well past it's sell by date a decade ago and Lineker did a good job keeping it going for so long. I personally haven't watched it for years but I am aware it was very popular. I don't think it will survive for long after his departure.

Re: Gary Lineker
I still watch it pretty religiously tbh. I get you can see the highlights/goals earlier, but the analysis is generally pretty good and I think it still has a place.
