Tokyo because I lived there for three years in the early '90s. I want to see what it's like now.

What was it like, living there? I went about 7 years ago and it blew my mind, makes you feel like you’re back in the Stone Age when you get home.
I’d probably go Mumbai, never been to India.

Re: Dropped off for 24 hours
Hard to get it over in a paragraph. I loved it and hated it in equal measure, but I worked long hours. The Japanese are efficient and inefficient. The people seem very polite, but it's often just ritualistic politeness. Like a lot of eastern Asian countries. The climate was either too hot or too cold, but great in spring. The nightlife back then was indescribably exciting, but I was young.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 6:56 amWhat was it like, living there? I have recently had a crime novel published by a London independent. It is the first of a trilogy, all written. It is set in 1990, largely against a backdrop of Shinjuku Kabukicho and Roppongi, I suspect all shadows of the places they were thirty-odd years ago. njnoircontact@gmail.com

Socotra: Small island belonging to Yemen. The home of the "Dragon tree." It's got a lot of unique species and would be an interesting 24 hour stopover.

Re: Dropped off for 24 hours
On a similar note I would choose to drop into Concordia camp at the top of the Baltoro Glacier in Northern Pakistan (on a clear day).
It is Surrounded by 4 of the 14 highest mountains (over 8,000m) on the planet, these include Gasherbrum 1 & 2 and Broad Peak. However, the star of the show would have to be be the massive hulk of K2.
At 8611m K2 is the second highest peak in the world and a much more dangerous climb than Everest. Many who reach the summit die on the way down due to exhaustion, lack of oxygen which results in lung and brain edema, avalanches and being trapped at high camps due to extreme weather conditions.
In January 2021 K2 became the last of the 8,000m peaks to be summited in Winter by a team from Nepal.

Two for me for very different reasons
1. Western Canada, somewhere I've always wanted to visit.
2. Auschwitz-Birkenau, because for a long time I've had this belief that I have to go there.

Baros.
Mrs tells me every year we are going and every year we don't as I haven't the patience to travel that long so being able to just be dropped there sounds good. I could take some photos for her if I decide to go alone

Pitcairn Island. Always been fascinated by the mutiny on the Bounty story. Would love to go but it's a complete mission to get there, involving boarding a mail ship that only sails from French Polynesia once every 2 weeks

Assuming you're beamed in by some kind of sci-fi device and get whisked away magically at the end of it I'm going to choose North Korea and have a scoot around to see what it's like.

I would probably choose Alaska. Having seen numerous TV Docu-series about life there a whistle stop tour would be good.

Bhutan, maybe. Aruba or Suriname might be exciting, but you can get into those easily enough.

Re: Dropped off for 24 hours
Nepal I think. Fortunate to have served with the Gurkhas, they are a fantastic people, very generous and with bags of courage, humility and honour. And I’d love to see Everest, even though I’d never reach the top.
Japan appeals to me also. I have a Japanese shotgun and the engineering and finish is quite superb. They make great bikes and cars and I believe they invented LEAN manufacturing, or at least perfected it. I’d like to see how they make things so good.

Re: Dropped off for 24 hours
Quicknick I was there 90-94 and went back January this year. A real eye opener and whereas nothing seemed to have changed obviously everything had changed in 30yrs. Most notably the traffic! Sat in traffic for hours on Roppongi-dori, not now! Roppongi not what it was, visited motown bar which has relocated, cavern club with the parrots (but not the ones i know) both venues not as good minus the expats! If you wanna chat more maybe we can do off line or meet up in Thailand next month. I'll be over there all Dec driving from Yasothon to Khao Lak as support vehicle for a charity run commemorating the 2004 tsunami.

Re: Dropped off for 24 hours
Maybe our paths crossed. I used to go in Motown. When I got there on 1st November, 1989, it wasn't open. I used to go in Deja Vu - right at the toilets at the top of the graveyard back then. Gas Panic, just down from the famous sushi bar. Both places long gone. Charleston, a short clcokwise walk around the graveyard from Gas Panic, just at the steps that led up to the Square Building area. There was also a place called Gaijin Zone. Also shut now. I can imagine the whole area has been horribly sterilised.Ourimbahclaret wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 9:43 pmQuicknick I was there 90-94 and went back January this year. Windermere in the snow at Christmas time because I'm old enough to have stopped pretending to care about other cultures, I can take the dog and it's only an hour and a half back drive back to East Lancashire and my own bed.

Re: Dropped off for 24 hours
I always remember the story of the England players going to Auschwitz before a friendly with Austria. One of the players talking about it afterwards said it was typical cards/messin about/jokes on the way there but absolute silence all the way back to the hotel. I always thought, if it can have that effect on footballers, I don't think I should ever go.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 2:07 pmTwo for me for very different reasons

Re: Dropped off for 24 hours
You would hope it would have that effect on any decent person to be honest. I went to Dachau back in 2007 on the way to our pre-season games in Austria. That was traumatic enough.burnley007 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 10:40 amI always remember the story of the England players going to Auschwitz before a friendly with Austria.
