In the 1966 World Cup squad too.

Best known for going on strike to engineer his move from Newcastle to Arsenal in the days when clubs had full control of the players. He actually went off working outside football and Newcastle finally relented after a court case.

Very good footballer.

RIP George. His dad George Sr was manager of Accrington Stanley for a time, and his uncle, Harry Eastham, also played for Stanley.

Super in his day.

Didn't Jimmy McIlroy play with him, in the Stoke team of that era? That's was a midfield!

Another star gone.

He went to Stoke after Jimmy Mac had left I think

I didn't realise he was still alive. I always thought he looked older than he actually was.

Won the League Cup with Stoke in 1972.

RIP

You are right. Just checked. Perhaps George Eastham was Jimmy replacement. 65 Jimmy went to Oldham. 66 George joined Stoke.

I was at Old Trafford for that protracted semi against West Ham, when Bobby Moore briefly went in goals.
It was George who crossed to make Dobing's eventual winner.

Think he played in the game on the Turf in March 1970.
1-1, Eric Probert scored against Gordon Banks.

Probably his last appearance on the Turf?

I always recall the two penalties:

Gordon Banks saving an absolute rocket of a spotkick hit by Geoff Hurst and then Bobby Moore saving the Bernard's penalty only to see him scoring from the rebound.

Played his first professional game for Ards, in the Northern Ireland League in 1953, as a 17 year old, where his Dad was player-manager ... and was still playing top-flight English Football for Stoke, when he scored the winner in the 1972 League Cup Final. That's a very long career for those times, when the pitches, medical treatment and Referee's interpretations of what constitutes a foul were very different ....
