M65 Burnley incident

Motorway closed both directions between Nelson and Burnley due to a concern for welfare incident at Gannow Top. Avoid the area if you can (we are stuck just after the Nelson junction heading towards Burnley).

Let's face it, the railings they put up to stop these desperate people were commented on at the time that they were to small. Let's hope this has a positive outcome as the last incident and that the person gets the help they need and the railings on this bridge are sorted.

Only 6 days since it last happened. Not sure higher railings would make much difference, it would just be harder to get someone down from the top and also make it a higher point to fall from. Very sad really that so many people get to that stage. Hope they get them down ok

There are a number of former hotpots where the railings curl back to the pavement which makes it impossible to climb up. Surely it's time to have a serious conversation about this bridge

Absolutely it's very sad that so many people are in such a mental state to contemplate doing such a thing.
It must also be unbelievably horrific for anybody witnessing or being involved in such an incident and could also suffer mental health issues as a result.
Hopefully the person involved is talked down and gets the help needed.

Agree. if you are that way out you'll find a different spot or even method you can't make everything suicide proof. That said I hope a good outcomes reached & the person can get the help they clearly need.

Obviously the concern has to be for the individual, however versus Derby there was an ambulance struggling to get through the traffic jam on the motorway also who knows who may have been trying to get an expectant mum to hospital that's why I think something should be done about this bridge, it's like magnet for some reason.

No news I’ve seen on the person concerned but the motorway was fully reopened around two hours ago

We're unlikely to get updates and it ought to be considered a private matter.

Sadly it appears cases like this are a regular occurence but let's just hope those involved are being supported and cared for without expecting to find out.

There's nothing that can do with the bridge really, plus the windy bridge just further down Pendle way is probably higher with waist high railings.

That’s a brilliant idea and I’m more than happy for you to put our details on any website/domain, the more people that know the better. Thank you bfcjg that’s lovely of you to say, we do try our best and trust me we get just as frustrated as families and patients when we get wrapped up in red tape.

The Burnley team is fantastic and we work with anyone aged 16+, we also expedite most people who meet veteran criteria and both men and women who meet perinatal criteria (parented a child aged under 2 years old).

No matter how dangerously someone has driven, causing multiple deaths,injuries etc ,has anyone been banned for life. Problem is also most people who do get a ban simply ignore it. Another case of inadequate punishments.

We’re appealing for information after a collision on the M65 left two people, including a child, injured.

We were called to a report of an initial collision at around 8:15pm, between a Mercedes E63S and an Audi S3 on the M65, near to Junction 12 (Brierfield.) A Ford Fusion has then collided with the Mercedes.

The driver of the Mercedes, a man in his 20s suffered serious injuries, and the passenger of the Mercedes, a young boy, suffered injuries, which are thankfully not thought to be life threatening or changing. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

No one else was injured in the collision.

Two men, aged 20 and 26, both from Nelson, were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Although two arrests have been made, our investigation is very much ongoing, and that is why we are now appealing to you.

If you witnessed the collision, or have dashcam footage, please get in touch. If you have footage of the Mercedes or the Audi prior to the collision, we’d also ask that you contact us.

How about if we had a minimum of 3 years jail for those ignoring lifetimes bans? I'm sure this would act as a deterrent. The police do tend to catch those who persistently drive while banned - at least going from the amount of convictions I see in the local online newspapers and police Twitter feeds.

It's the 'slap on the wrist' courts, along with weak sentencing guidelines, that let everyone down - and places road users and pedestrians in danger.

It was quite clear from the start what had happened, within minutes I had people who knew I was on the motorway calling me concerned as they had heard about 2 cars racing that had crashed.

Photos of the aftermath are now on FB, this was caused by careless driving - no other way.

I drove Eastbound past the incident at 7.30 this morning. One car ( silver ), was on its roof, a black Ford was in the concrete central reservation, and nearer to Burnley, a lime green Audi was on the hard shoulder. They were just about to lift and flip the silver car. Chaos all round Fence, Higham, Colne, Nelson and Brierfield all morning.
