I've seen a couple on holiday and they always start by testing the audience for people who are receptive to suggestion ( allegedly) didn't have any affect on our group. I have a mate though who isn't a bullsh1tter who has been hypnotised on stage and he said it just felt normal what he was doing and couldn't understand why people were laughing. I'm sure though a lot of it is staged.

I have hired hypnotises for cabaret shows. One in particular was very serious about the benefits and asked to do a few minutes talk, during the evening, aside from his act, which was actually a magical act overall.

Also, he was very good and did mind reading.
I say this because he wasn't cheap. However, when I rang, looking for a spec act, I asked if he was free on the date. Yes. I then asked his fee, which I knew was decent. He responded by saying £30, which was as cheap as chips but actually the remaining budget I had!

On the night good stuff and that included levitation of a woman I knew well. He chose her, as stated in other posts. When it was over, she was as white as a sheet and had no idea she had levitated.

A friend, on my table wanted to give up smoking. He had succumbed to the 'can't unlock my hands' starting point to get a few up.

The hypnotist said he would light up and with every puff it will taste worse. Sent him back to us and he had no idea.

He lit up shortly after and the expression said it all. After another drag, we were all smiling. Unfortunately, he didn't see the funny side and shouted at his girlfriend that she had messed up his fag's. We came to her rescue snd explained what had happened. He didn't believe us.

At work on the Monday, he was smoking again. His girlfriend said he had bought another packet - same effect. He just kept smoking until he had overcome the bad taste thoughts!!! Bloody idiot.

It is most certainly a real and undervalued technique.

Another friend was a nurse and studied hypnosis and used the suggestion techniques in her job.

I was reading that Stephen Bunting, the Darts player, turned to Hypnotherapy because of Mental Health problems to help rid his demons. He said at one point he was close to walking away from Darts. Perhaps Hypnosis does have its benefits ?

Its a tool often used for people who deal with regular trauma leading to PTSD in the services and military and has a very high success rate.

The stage acts have led to it becoming a form of magic/comedy and as such given it a seedy and asinine reputation.

I've seen Derren Brown live twice and I'm not entirely sure what I'm watching or what he's doing, but it's bloody impressive and absolutely mind boggling! (Even though it's clearly trickery!)

My dad had hypnotherapy to quit smoking. Turned out he started as an early teen because his idol was his dad at the time who also smoked. Problem was to get there they unlocked some traumatic memories that set off about 10 years of severe depression and my dad is now a shell of his previous personality. I don’t know about tv hypnotists but hypnotherapy is very real.

When I lived in Haslingden in 50’s and 60’s there was a dentist who used hypnotism to sedate his clients before filling teeth or whatever. Glickman was his name. He wasn’t my dentist so I cannot verify it but it was common knowledge at the time.
