According to the Telegraph Jimmy Anderson is in talks with Lancashire about returning to play for them this next season.

I'd guess that's when he's not involved with the England set up, the twenty, or doing his media work.

Basically Lancashire won't see a lot of Jimmy id have thought..

Has kept himself remarkably fit, never over bowled so should be able to bowl out Div 2 batsmen for Lancs.

Anderson, who turns 43 in July, has not played since his farewell Test at Lord’s against West Indies last July but Telegraph Sport understands he will make himself available for all formats for Lancashire in an attempt to extend his illustrious career.

He has kept his body fit by bowling in the nets in his role as coach with the England Test side and worked hard on his fitness with the team’s strength and conditioning coaches on the tours to Pakistan and New Zealand before Christmas. He is confident he can pick up where he left off last year and play for Lancashire when the season starts in April.

It would give him the opportunity for a farewell season with the club he joined as a teenager, although if it goes well he may consider extending his career even longer. Anderson will attempt to combine playing with his duties as a bowling coach with the England Test team and media commitments.

Sir Alastair Cook played five seasons for Essex after his retirement from Test cricket in 2018, ending his playing career only at the end of the 2023 season.

Anderson’s England career came to an abrupt end at the start of last summer when the management told him he was no longer part of their plans. He was granted a farewell Test at Lord’s, where he took his career wickets to 704, third behind Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan.

Anderson felt he could have carried on and in his autobiography, released last year, compared his meeting with Rob Key, Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes to an execution scene in the gangster film Goodfellas.

Anderson signalled his intention to keep his career going when he put himself forward for the Indian Premier League auction despite not having played Twenty20 cricket since 2014 – but he was unsold

Love of cricket keeps Anderson going and he wants to play for as long as he can. He has not ruled out playing white-ball cricket again either. He has not played T20 for more than a decade and last played a 50-over game in 2019, but it is in red-ball championship cricket, with the Dukes ball, that he remains the master. He will boost the county game, both from a Lancashire perspective and by giving young batsmen a chance to face one of the greats of the sport.

England do not play Test cricket until their one-off match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge in late May. Anderson is not on the England and Wales Cricket Board staff and is contracted series by series, allowing him freedom over his diary.

Anderson will be available to play at least five rounds of the championship before England meet up for the Test summer. Lancashire were relegated from Division One last year and will look at Anderson as a key part of trying to regain their top-flight status.

As he is no longer centrally contracted, Lancashire would have to pay his wages for the first time in 20 years but are unlikely to turn down the chance to pick England’s greatest wicket-taker. In his one championship game last season, Anderson took match figures of eight for 64 against Nottinghamshire.

Lancashire start their championship season against Middlesex at Lord’s on April 4, giving Anderson the chance to return to the scene of his England farewell before a first home game at Old Trafford against Northamptonshire.

If that is true when he was only 5 wickets from becoming the second best taker of test wickets, that is IMO shameful of them.
Almost as bad as still no knighthood.

And they will have to pay him for the first time in years with him no longer having a central contract

I don't suppose it matters but it might be better editing paywalled content and making reference to it rather than reproducing it in full.

That's the main difference.

I'm not sure what will pay more to be honest? A radio pundit or red ball contract at Lancs?

I don't think he will have the relevant coaching badges to become a proper coach in the England set up yet?

I'm a little bit surprised at that but I suppose he hasn't got anything to lose now.
I'm convinced he lasted as long as he did at the top end of Test cricket because he give up white ball cricket.

Going around the park and bowling slow ball bouncers etc.. Will play havoc with a bowlers line and length/confidence for the top level.

He’d never have played test cricket as long as he did had he continued playing white ball cricket. But I just think he’s keen to get back to playing cricket.

I think he said a couple of years ago that if England didn’t want him he’d play for Lancs and if Lancs didn’t want him he’d play for Burnley.

Now confirmed he has signed a one year contract with Lancashire. He will be available for all formats and playing for Lancs will take precedence over his work for England.

On the tailenders podcast, released yesterday, Jimmy was pretty clear his number one priority is playing cricket for Lancashire, above and beyond anything else.

Suspect the white ball stuff is so people in the IPL etc can see whether he's up to it - he said he was, but there was no bid in the auction.
