Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
Hi all. Not a regular poster but I have been around for a long time. I hope this post is OK? A good friend died of cancer recently, Darren Pope. A true Claret who followed Burnley to a lot of away games.
He was only 54 and his 2 sons are sharing around social media a hope that his Claret family will give him a good send off on the 54th minute of Tonight's game against the Mackems.
Daz was a really good bloke and very highly thought of and this was a relatively short battle against cancer after being in remission from a an earlier battle.
I hope this reaches enough good Clarets to give him the recognition he deserves. RIP Daz. UTC

Tonight is the clubs in memoriam for all Clarets that have passed away. A minute's applause before the game.
Hopefully his family have contacted the club to have his name on the big screen.

In memoriam pre match should be sufficient. No need to clap on 54 mins. Condolences to the family in question but this needs to stop.

I liked Daz, didnt know him too well but knew each other by name, would have a natter in the pub and had mutual friends.
Really sad one, feel for all his family and close mates.

Some of us having been saying this for some considerable time. It's not being disrespectful but during the match, I want to watch the match. Three times at Ewood and even their fans gave up with the third one. A match a couple of seasons ago on the Turf there were four.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:02 pmIn memoriam pre match should be sufficient. No need to clap on 54 mins. It just so happens to coincide with this year's In Memoriam - a minute before the game when all of us can show respect.

Some of the applause will be very personal to posters and friends of the person who has died. I know it's the memoriam game tonight but for me people should always have a choice and you can either join in or don't bother.

Just don't comment. If you don't want to show respect fine. He was a very popular guy and I'm sure there will be plenty that would like to show respect.

OK we've all got different views but let's not forget a top Burnley lad has lost his life here, we are better than this so let's just leave it there shall we, family and friends don't need this.

Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
Such a tough thing this but I can't keep clapping for dead people at football games, mid game.
In no way to disregard or disrespect those that have unfortunately passed away, but the clapping takes away my joy from a game I go and watch to escape lifes perils and misery.
In the past it was a funeral and church etc that allowed an emotional outpouring. It seems a random clap at a match has replaced it. You refuse to do it and you're seemingly a horrible person.
Do the annual memorial and that's it.
Genuinely I wouldn't want anyone to clap my passing at a football game. I'd be mortified, in more ways than one
And for that reason alone I am going to live to 121 years old just to ensure I don't end up getting clapped for my untimely death at a match attended by 4,000 people as we lose to 1-0 in extra time in to Crewe in a Sherpa Van Trophy match (or whatever it's called now)

Sounds harsh, but that's not what we're there for.
RIP though Daz - by all accounts sounded like a great chap and 54 is no bloody age.

Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
RIP to Daz but this needs to stop now. It was really jarring tonight as Sunderland sprang a quick attack as people were clapping. It’s not even a great tribute. The memorial list before the game should be enough.
Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
It almost seems disrespectful, when it occurs multiple times in a game. The first one, perhaps two, receive applause and then, as you say, everyone gets a bit fed up of it - if that’s respect, I agree, it’s time it stopped.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 4:33 pmSome of us having been saying this for some considerable time. It’s a more recent thing, but I can’t recall when it started to become such a big thing in games. We have the annual memoriam, which I think should suffice.
Speaking of which, it was saddening to see just how many had passed in the last year and as ever, a few taken far too young, on the list. My condolences to everyone who lost someone, during the last year.

Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
Firstly condolences to this person’s friends and family - but tonight lots of people around me were clapping like zombies whilst looking at each other asking why they were clapping. It was very odd. I think the club should politely decline requests for these tributes to be put on the screen during the match and use the annual in memoriam tribute which is a nice way to remember the many Burnley fans who pass away every year.

I applauded the depressingly long list of people who passed away this year but didn’t look at the names on the screen as it’s awful to see the number of people who were taken far too young.DCWat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:12 amIt almost seems disrespectful, when it occurs multiple times in a game. Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
Ive had family and friends that have been mentioned in the annual memorium and some that haven't. I give all due respect to Daz and any other Clarets that have had their minutes applause. But that applause only makes me think of those that didn't get the same minute dedicated to them. I give my sincere condolences to everyone that knew and loved Daz. But I do think it's time to stop the individual dedication and keep it to the annual memoriam. All Clarets are equal.

Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
My thoughts are with Daz's family and friends and condolences to Daz and as said above 54 is no age at all but this applause during the game does need to stop, the memoriam is suffice for wanting to remember family and friends who have passed away over the past year.
On a side note I would like to point out the respectful Sunderland fans who joined in with the applause pre-match, it was good to see.

Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
The first of them was January 2013 and the game was against Crystal Palace. It works really well and so many clubs have followed us with it now, I think Southampton were the only other club to do it at the time. So many names I recognised on that list last night including a couple of very good friends.DCWat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:12 am

If I had I would have exercised choice not to clap
Everybody has the same choice .
There are a lot more irritating things going on on at the match
than choosing to show respect for someone’s relatives
Time for you to be able to make your own mind up wether to exercise your own personal choice and leave others to theirs

Re: Daz Pope RIP 54 Mins Tonight
Due to the sensitive nature of the topic, any argument against it always appears harsher than it is intended, and let me say that no disrespect is intended whatsoever and my full condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased always, however I would say that why is one fan deserving an applause over the others that had a round of applause before the match? It isn’t just a case of don’t clap and leave others to clap if they wish. If all of the families who the crowd had an applause for decided that they wanted their relatives to have an applause on x minutes, what then? As CT said at ewood the other week the third clap not everyone joined in. You can see how it can and has got a bit out of hand. On the football side, you aren’t telling me it isn’t a distraction for the players also? It’s a football match, not a place to mourn.Turftalkers mentor wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 9:50 amI for one hadn’t noticed this practice getting in the way of watching the match

The place to debate whether to clap during a game, isn't on a thread about someone's death.

I didn't know Daz or about the clap before the game, felt awkward.
I presume it was too late to getting him added to the list.

He got a decent clap and I saw his name on the board.
I'm sure his family will appreciate it.
The in memoriam was superb last night with the rolling names. Far better than previous years pages changing every few seconds.
