You'll have to forgive the OP, he was in a 1984 film.

The best one has to be Mike Flowers? Who did the cover of Wonderwall.
A lot of people at the time thought Oasis had done the cover version, not him.

Just discovered a band called Start to End. They are a Scottish collective who take a classic album and play it from start to end.
Their most recent effort was Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout.
Unfortunately, they only play in Scotland at the moment.
I believe they have also done
Court & Spark … Joni Mitchell
Hats … Blue Nile
Heaven & Las Vegas … Cocteau Twins

The Clash absolutely nailed "I fought the law".
David Gray did a great job of "say hello, wave goodbye".

And I'd like to nominate Elton John's ' Your Song' covered by Billy Paul. Absolutely magnificent rendition of an already classic track.

I said at the time, I was at college in the mid 90s and there was plenty of discussions about it. Before mobile phones had come popular with easy access to Google.
Big music hits were coming out all the time and they must have released them pretty close to each other.
It was 30 years ago.

I think the best cover of all time is Elvis’s version of Hound Dog. He wasn’t even covering Big Mama Thornton’s original but was inspired by the version Freddie Bell and the Bell Boys performed in Las Vegas. It was Elvis’s rendition of Hound Dog on the Milton Berle show (before he had even recorded it) that propelled him to infamy as Elvis the Pelvis.

I assume this was why The Beatles' A Day in the Life was omitted as well.
But thanks for the heads up about this album.

Just listening to Elkie Brooks on BBC1.
Singing - Nights in White Satin (Moody Blues)
She had a hit with her cover, which is excellent.
Distinctive voice.
