Or just not technically good enough against better teams. His high energy and pressing is his strength which is why in games like these he can be anonymous. A player in that 10 role who can manipulate the ball better would probably make a huge difference in our side.

I think Shelvey when fit will start playing that role, and if Josh leaves we have probably a better player. The most dangerous we looked was from the balls CJ was pinging to the wide men to run on to, and I am looking forward to seeing Jo Jo Shelvey being able to provide some killer passes. I anticipate Shelvey will make his debut v Southampton

Not sure why it's such a surprise. When the stakes are high and the standard is higher then he fails to show up. He's a runner and nicks an odd goal, but this technically good player that people claim him to be he certainly isn't. Give him no responsibilty and licence, and he'll pop up in the box and grab a goal, but needs other players around him to be half useful.

He isn't, never has been and never will be. Our last 2 relegation seasons both involved Brownhill as a main stay in our midfield.

I almost forgot he was playing tonight, practically invisible.

The whole midfield was poor tonight, Leeds dominated the midfield and won every 50/50 ball all over the pitch. Cullen did a decent job of recycling the ball but the ball retention of Cullen , Laurent and others in the team was poor.

He was fairly consistently tracked, and nullified, during the game by Gruev, I think it was.

He’s generally pretty good at arriving into the box, at this level, but he isn’t particularly good at operating in tight spaces or finding space for himself. In games like tonight, he becomes anonymous, for large parts.

I think some people on here either watched on TV or need to spend 5-10 minutes of the game watching his off the ball movement

You play your opponent and you can see he is doing what is asked of him

He was all over the place tonight - working the spaces

Leeds are a great team that needed to be respected

He can be too loose in tight spaces but he’s massivley under appreciated by some fans that in my opinion… just don’t get what his job on the pitch is

Brownhill is under rated

There are three main reasons why he's not in games sometimes.

Firstly, he's tracked by the opposition as he's a threat.
Secondly, we don't move the ball quickly enough in the final third to get the balls into the box that allow him to make the late runs he's good at.
Thirdly, we don't have a striker capable of holding the ball up, in order to lay the ball off to Josh.

The issue isn't Brownhill. Tonight, the issue was 100% Flemming and Foster. Neither offered a thing in the final third, which made us look as sharp as a toastie loaf.

He's a decent Championship standard footballer, but that's it.

Playing to instructions and part of a team that just will not get beat or, concede a goal !

He was brilliant at Plymouth and decent tonight against a good team.

Also our highest scorer this season and a leader on and off the pitch.

Brownhill is just energy in games against top end championship sides, he doesn’t quite have the technical ability or that drive of the ball a top cm has

Perhaps if he'd been just a squad player for us in the PL, instead of a regular starter during the last two campaigns we were there, we may have stood a better chance of staying up?

Brownhill isn’t anywhere near the reason we have been relegated a couple of times

Just like he wasn’t the main reason when we didn’t

If he proves his fitness, I'd rather have Shelvey in midfield for us in the PL than Brownhill.

Ignoring his football abilities. I doubt we'd be anywhere near where we are as a club without the likes of him in the last few years. It's reassuring when we've been bringing so many players in during the last few seasons, that we could rely on him, Jay Rod, Barnes, Taylor, Cork etc to keep a strong core to the dressing room so the whole thing didn't fall apart

Farke was quite specific that they neeed to stop Brownhill:

This is why [Josh] Brownhill, for example, is on nine goals. So for that, we needed legs and physicality to control this. I'm pretty happy how he handled all this because to control Brownhill is always important

He's played over 100 games in the Premier League, so you probably could make an argument that at some stage he's been a Premier League player.

Got to agree with your comments here.

He is a first class professional footballer with a good attitude which is essential to any team.

To be fair he’s no Bernardo Silva or DeBruyne but if he was he wouldn’t be at Burnley in the first place.

I watched him closely in the previous home match and the amount of ‘unseen’ running and closing down on the opposition was great.

We need to support players like JB as he is essential to our Championship team. That’s what supporters should do - not constant criticism of all and sundry.

Be careful otherwise you’ll be labelled a ‘happy clapper’

Burnley fans have a history of undervaluing their midfielders, until hey are not available/have left. Brownhill, sadly is another that will continue to be called, then lamented once he is no longer a Burnley player.

Brownhill is a strong and clever player. Plays at his best as an attacking midfielder. He has scored more goals than you might expect, some of them game changers.
I think he gets a raw deal on this forum, especially when he’s described as not being Premiership quality.. A Debruyne he is not nor is he a Salah, but do me a favour and leave him alone.

The tactics and game plan were visible for anyone with a basic knowledge of football or 60 yrs watching Burnley. Don't loose .
