Hi all

Love a Chinese take away but other than Beijing in Dunnockshaw and China Rose in Tottington I don't know of any decent sit in Chinese places other than having to go to Manchester and fancy a change....

So just asking if anyone knows of anywhere decent that's good in the Burnley and surrounding areas ?

Thank you fellow Clarets

Is there such thing as a “ good Chinese restaurant “? ( though the OP sensibly asks for “ decent “
While I’ve hardly ever had a “bad” Chinese , much like takeaways they’re almost identical the country over . Compared to say Italian and Indian which can vary enormously .
Alas ,most of the Chinese’s in Manc are now buffets , again , perfectly ok but no cigar / fortune cookie .

Jade Palace in Earby is pretty good. Not good to look at but it tastes nice.

Used to be some good ones in Manc Chinatown that were excellent value for money for the quality of the food they served up, but sadly no more. The lockdown saw off a couple family run places that had been going for years. I find what's left, including the new ones that have sprung up and taken their place, a much of muchness, including the expensive ones.

Sadly, the Beijing is now also bang average takeaway fodder. Chefs come and go…

That's really not true. Manchester has a huge and growing Chinese population, especially students - and there are new eateries popping up all the time to cater to this audience.

It depends what kind of Chinese food you're looking for (western style sweet and sour type stuff, or something more authentic?). The former you can find anywhere. I can name a few really good places off the top of my head if the latter.

* Red Chilli - Portland Street - very authentic with a huge menu
* Noodle Alley - Faulklner Street - authentic sichuan
* CHEF DIAO - Oldham Street - excellent dim sum
* OnePlus - Charles Street - hotpot
* Happy Seasons - Faulkner Street - The best Chinese BBQ you've ever had, probably

Oh and if you want to make the trip to Leeds OP, then I can only recommend Wens Restaurant on North Street.

Jay Rayner rates it, and it's very affordable and unpretentious too... Read his review here https://www.theguardian.com/food/2020/s ... amer-skins

Yu in copster green is our go-to. A bit different from the copy and paste slop most takeaways serve up

Another 1 for the Summer Palace, sited on the left side of the main road out of Padiham, towards Simonstone. Best ring after 6pm, if your ordering a takeaway, or a meal in.

I found Yu to be a massive let down when we went. Overpriced crap for what you get.

Thanks for all the responses clarets it’s been very helpful

Gonna give the place in Padiham a try - looks like it’s got great reviews and then at some point venture over to Earby and Clitheroe

I agree there are loads of great Chinese options in Manchester ! Just wanted to stay more local

Much appreciated

I've been to China and the food is a bit bland.

The Chinese have clearly not got to grips with syrupy sauce and mono sodium glutomate.

Apart from the sticky mouth and gut rot the day after a Brit Chinese is just the ticket and we don't stick the actual head of the thing you are eating on the buffet like wot they do.

Chinese food didn’t take off when it first came to the UK takeaway market so they started to fry it and add lots of sweet sauces etc as it was too bland in it’s original format apparently.

Not quite sure about “ huge and growing” Chinese population “ ? Are there really more Chinese in town than other ethnicities or growing any quicker? Though I stand corrected .Chinatown’s been there since time immemorial and always has had a huge selection of mainly decent-ish places . Though I’ve never even seen duck when in China never mind sweet n sour muck tbh.

My main point being Chinese food struggles (imo)by its nature to have a true differential in quality than many other cuisines . And with respect listing a few chi chi student gaffs “ time out” style is neither here nor there . Though I’ve tried the Faulkner st one , a hell of queue too .

There arent any within about a 15 mile radius of Burnley worth a pop at - all same shite
Yu is overpriced crap and full of pretentious idiots
Summer Palace in Padiham is an absolute dump

Jade Palace fairs better in Earby, but the best i've been to (by a long shot) is the Rice Bowl in Manchester
