Beer going down 1p a pint

Post by basil6345789 » Fri Jan 31, 2025 9:50 pm

Yippee! As if any landlord would implement this! In reality it'll soon go up by 20 or 30p, courtesy of Rachel From Accounts.

Does that mean that if I drink roughly 400 of em I’ll effectively get a free pint?

Used to be 1/6d a pint then when we went decimal put it up to 8p. Hole in Wall Foulridge.

Beer duty reduced by 1p. All brewers other costs continuing to rise and the likely impact for pubs will be the cost of the beer to buy in for them has likely gone up by around 10p a pint from 1st feb.

Realistically you are going to see the average cost of a pint go up a pretty decent amount by April (when the NI changes hit) if not before. Generally this won’t be pubs being greedy, in fact, my instinct is you will see substantially more pub closes this year. And ultimately that means less businesses employing people and contributing tax to the government.

Governments from way back have seen beer duty as a cash cow and added pennies to pints. People grumble but still pay however, this Chancellor has possibly "broke the landlords back" and we will indeed see many more pubs close as a result of the NI increases and minimum wage rises. I'm sorry dear Rachel but you can't tax discretionary items because people will eventually change their buying habits and you will end up with less tax.

1p off duty but most water companies putting up their rates by 25%+

Something tells me we’ll be seeing less breweries soon enough.

The way she announced it as if it would make a blind bit of difference just shows how far removed politicians of both colours these days are removed from the average person in this country.

Not going to help pubs much to be honest. They’ve had a real struggle for years now. The young uns just don’t go on a weekend like we used to. Sad.

On average 34 pubs a month have closed since 2020.

Lots of different reasons for closing, a few pence increase on pints is not really one of them.

Rachel From Accounts completely out of her depth. What chancellor worth their salt would instruct the Bank of England to put climate change on the same level as economic growth. It’s absolute madness. I really hope Labour prove my fears to be wrong but I’m not holding my breath.

No bigger bandits than the water companies.

Now the gravy train has ended and the whole groaning infrastructure needs attention, they get the customers to pay for it.

April onwards is gonna be interesting for the economy as impossible not to face even “ small “ ( possible quite steep) price rises . Utility bills are horrific . To sacrifice so much at the “green altar” is one hell of a gamble growth wise . Though time will tell , in the meantime let’s enjoy our £5.99 pints…

Showing my age now but can remember when I first started drinking, around mid 70s, getting a pint of lager and lime (disgusting stuff but just a daft teenager back then) and paying 25p a pint for it in the Swiss Corner, and that was one of the more expensive places to drink.
