Throw ins
I thought I noticed our much maligned set-piece coach leaping out of his seat for throw ins on Monday night - or did I just dream that?

He earns his corn does that lad.
If pointing meant points we'd be running away with this league.

Re: Throw ins
On the subject of throw ins, I notice Bashir Humphreys must have been getting some lessons from Vitinho…. I realise he’s a centre half by trade but he’s really poor at throw ins and invariably just throws it to the opposition.

Re: Throw ins
For almost as long as I can remember we have been virtually static at throw ins. The first time it really struck me was in 81/82!

Our players tend to stand still at throw-ins... we've been poor at them for years.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 11:11 amOn the subject of throw ins, I notice Bashir Humphreys must have been getting some lessons from Vitinho…. Re: Throw ins
Dyche was the best.
Throw it down the line, let them head it out, repeat.
When you reach the corner flag, start heading back down the pitch.

Re: Throw ins
Off topic but Rovers away, then again yesterday, we won 1-0 without having a single corner.
Rare you achieve that once a season never mind twice in 5vweeks

Re: Throw ins
It would be nice if we took them quickly a bit more frequently. Brownhill did at Plymouth, put their defence under pressure and forced them into a mistake which led to a goal.

I think that's what the set-piece coach is doing - ensuring everyone is back in the framework before the throw is taken.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2025 9:28 pmIt would be nice if we took them quickly a bit more frequently. Re: Throw ins
The only time I can remember us being any good at throw ins was when we had Blake showing for the ball when marked and the skill to retain possession, defour did do it on occasion as well when he actually played!

Re: Throw ins
Some players are good at them. It’s a skill just like crossing a ball or shooting is a skill. Where you throw the ball to the player it’s being aimed at and what the plan is once they receive it. Trippier was excellent with throw ins - he would often throw it to someone’s feet who would cushion it back to him and he would then instantly spread the play out to the centre half. Quick, painless and effective.

Re: Throw ins
Have to say, find our throw ins so frustrating. Always slow to take them, pass it anround anbout three potential takers before it gets to the one who is really going to take it, then after all that always back down the line and then back across the defence! Often from the final third or approaching the final third!
Southampton took a good one at the weekend. Player quick to the ball, quick throw in to space up the wing. Pretty simple and effective if you don’t give everyone five minutes to shuffle over, and of course no offsides so you can stretch teams.

Re: Throw ins
We never score from corners. Could add a few goals between now and the end of the season. Could make all the difference between top two or third. I'm surprised we haven't added that string to our bow. Roberts' long throw is another under utilised weapon.

Re: Throw ins
As someone has already pointed out, Roberts' long throw is used to cover the increasing distance from him back to CJ as we head up the touchline.

Re: Throw ins
We often get too close to the man taking the throw-in which is a waste, asking for it to be a foul throw. We do generally look to throw it back rather than forward but that's usually because that man is unmarked.
