Sonne........Shelvey...Hannibal......Pires

....Benson...........................Sarmiento..

......................Barnes

Could be Egan-Riley in the Cullen role or Pires even playing ahead of Humphreys on the left. Doubt he’ll change shape.

That's my prediction as well.

Interesting selection! Should be a good game. UTC!

Strange line-up, not much goal threat there. (now watch them prove me wrong :D )

Not so sure with that selection, complete midfield overhaul never played together at all?

A good game to try a new formation out if so. Should be an interesting watch!

Lots of changes were to be expected, but that line up is a bit like an unmade jigsaw.
I'm glad Edwards isn't starting because we look like we've turned up to make the numbers up. Taking part in a debacle wouldn't be a great start.
We'll have to see what Saints put out.

It doesn't look like it at all. Seems like a lot of thoughts gone into that line up. I think Parkers given up the possession before the game starts and wants Benson/Sarmiento to give us a threat on the break with Barnes giving them a platform

They’ve gone strong. Although strong is relative considering there’s 2 places between us in the pyramid.

Good to see Benson ,Shelvey , Sarm start , Pires and Barnes being the only weak links but Redmond , Fleming and Edward’s on bench give a plan B.

Redmond back on the bench too!

Hopefully Watford continue to do us a favour because a week on Monday it's Leeds v Sunderland !

Great to see Redmond back today!

Re the league programme, I genuinely believe our next three league games are our most important this season and will tell us whether we have a chance of top two or not.

I just wonder if he's going to try ER in a midfield role? He does occasionally drive from deep with power and maybe SP has thought that could be an option.

I don't see it.
Teams are made of partnerships on the pitch, which is why playing Bauress and McDermott together worked, and I can only see players who aren't used to each other or a system.
I'm not complaining, we have bigger fish to fry, just surprised.

Shame Hull don’t play today. Will be fresher for midweek.

I thought a few of the U21s had been left out of their game in midweek so they could play in this?

There's only Bauress on the bench.

Surely starting Bauress and Mcdermott together against a Premier league team would be more like giving it up before we'd kicked off.

If I was hazarding a guess I would say.

Hdlaky
Humphrey’s, Egan Riley, Worrall, Pires
Sonne, Hannibal, shelvey
Benson, Barnes, Sarmiento

I think we've done that anyway.
As I said I'm easy about it, but I would have thought to give ourselves a chance we would have picked a team, nothing against any of the players who are starting, I just don't recognise a team there.

Southampton have obviously decided they are relegated. Only a couple of changes in their XI from their win over Ipswich.

Yeah, and they have only got 3 games in 15 days vs our 5, is what I read. I guess they kinda have to give their fans something to cheer about this season.

I expected changes and we've got a squad that can certainly withstand wholesale changes and still put out an extremely good and balanced team, but to change the system at the same time might be asking too much, especially against quality opposition (despite their current league position) who are fielding almost their best team. We'll see!

Well we'll see, but the suggestion is with that line up it will be 3 at the back and if it isn't, then one of Pires, E-R or Humphreys looks like they'll play in midfield, when tbf we have genuine midfielders who could do that.

Would make no sense whatsoever for them to make loads of changes. They're down anyway, may as well try and have a cup run.

Will be interesting to see how Pires gets on in that position though. I’ve thought for a while it might be worth trying against teams with strong right sides.
