A very nice tribute Tony, a fulsome read with much detail, many thanks. Your love/admiration for Jay shines through.

Lovely article that Tony. Brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
I can still remember that goal he scored against Notts Forest in our Judas promotion season.
Legend is an overused word but sure most Clarets will regard him as exactly that.

Great write up. I managed to get to the England game v Chile at Wembley when he made his England debut. I was stood up cheering him and a bbloke next to me asked why I wasn't cheering Adam Lalana too as I must be a Saints Fan. I corrected him, I was cheering on a Southampton player, but as it says in the article, he is one of our own. A Burnley lad, no matter who he plays for,

Excellent, just excellent.
I was sat in the Bob Lord when he scored his first goal. Two lads in front of me said " its a big ask bringing on a youngster to change a game", I responded with the reply " He's a well known local lad who's going to be one to watch", & its been a pleasure watching him over the years.

At some point people will appreciate how rare it is to see a genuine locally born star come right through the system and play for England. I've been watching since 2003 and he's the only one.
I doubt I will see it happen again.
The injury robbed him of many more caps.

I've been watching since 1960 and can only add Brian Miller and Micky Phelan

I think but for that injury, he never would have ended up back here, certainly not as early as he did. Pochettino really wanted him at Spurs didn't he?

The injury and illness had a huge effect on his career. He'd have gone to Spurs and I'm sure would have won a lot more England caps.

Good article, Tony. I know a few lads around his age that used to knock around with him, dad knows Kiko. A proper Burnley lad living the dream. Hope to see him back at the club one day.
Also, typo a bit down the article.

A brilliant tribute. Thank you, Tony.
My biggest memory of Jay, outside of his rocket at Old Trafford, was his performance at the City Ground, where he scored both goals in our 0-2 win.
He scored a brilliant header down at the far end, from a Trippier cross. In the second half he put a penalty out for a throw-in, after slipping at the moment of contact.
It was embarrassing for him and their fans heckled him, but he got up, brushed himself down and for the next few minutes, played like a man possessed…and yup, you guessed it…he was always going to have the last laugh, and so it proved!

Great write up.
I remember going to watch Burnley reserves and Jay was ball boy. One of the players spooned a shot into the cricket field stand and the bloke a few seats in front of me thought Jay was taking too long collecting the ball, shouting “f*cking hurry up ya d*ckhead” (this is a reserve game remember

)
The next second the bloke was joined by a rather large chap who shouted to him “that my f*cking son”
The bloke crapped his pants, I wouldn’t mess with Kiko

Not sure whether Jay is someone who would want to remain involved with the game when he retires, but you'd hope that somehow/somewhere there might be a place for him at the club. He's a brilliant role model and ambassador for the town and club. All the best to him as he finishes out his career.

A lovely read for a true legend
One very fond memory for me is when we went to WBA in the PL and Jay was playing for the Albion. It was when Ash got that great overhead goal and Wood scored the second.Jay did not play that well on that day and got subbed but as he went off the clarets there in instant chorus started chanting he was one of our own.Maybe that was the omen for his return

He stayed at West Brom when he could have moved on after they were relegated, to try and get them back to the Premier League, something that the Baggies fans appreciated and remember him fondly for.
Says alot about the lad.

Does anyone remember his goal against Forest at home in maybe the 08/09 season? Gets a yard on his man with a couple of stepovers and curls it top corner. Think that might be up there with his best.

Superb goal, just his second league goal for us

Excellent write up CT I really enjoyed reading that. It’s been a pleasure watching him progress from the School of Excellence to the present day. Thanks Jay for some great memories. YABAC.

Very good write regarding one of the very few who come from the town to play and excel for the club. I like many will always remember the goal he scored against Nottingham forest.
