He was 95, but his wife is only 63. The circumstances don't sound good at all.

My favourite actor - whatever the role or genre of film you knew it was going to be enjoyable if he was in it.

Particularly enjoyed his performances in French Connection, Bonnie & Clyde and a latter day western with an all star cast that seems to have mostly passed under the radar, The Quick and the Dead.

As I understand matters it should be easy to ascertain CO poisoning as carboxyhaemoglobin is red, so bodies should not be blue/cyanosed as haemoglobin gives up its oxygen but remains red when death is from carbon monoxide poisoning as the HbCO complex stays for a long time.
Have to agree with Elwa; knowing he was in the film made it a must for me to watch.Must have watched Enemy of the State several times now.

Loved Mississippi Burning - one of my favourite movies ever.

Gene Hackman played a fantastic cameo role in Young Frankenstein - the funniest film ever made !

Yes it’s very sad news.

It was one of his later roles, but his performance as Royal Tenenbaum was immense.

Not always the easiest to work with by all accounts, but what a body of work he left. Fantastic actor.

Every single story I've heard about him away from a movie set has been exemplary. On set, it's clear that he was interested in making the best film possible and for his characters to work properly. There are again many stories of him questioning directors to explain something - the aforementioned The Quick and the Dead for instance - and when hearing the explanation, agreeing with it. That's a sign of an actor making sure something is right, even if it makes their character look bad.

I bloomin' love The Quick and the Dead. It's not a great film, but it is a movie where a lot of talent clearly put a lot of work into making a movie which succeeds in the job of entertaining the audience from start to finish, not least Sharon Stone. She got a lot of other muttering and abuse for standing her ground as producer, when many decisions she made - like the casting of the virtually unknown at the time DiCaprio and Crowe and Sam Raimi as director - were proved right.

One I enjoy not previously mentioned is Narrow Margin. An LA DA trying to get a witness back to LA whilst being chased by the mob.

A brilliant actor in some brilliant films and weirdly I'd assumed he was already dead because he'd disappeared from the scene some years ago, but turns out he'd basically retired and turned his back on the industry.

There are plenty of accounts from the filming of the Royal Tenenbaums that contradict that, but Anderson himself has said he felt bad about how that all went down and the circumstances around it.

Another shout from me for Mississippi Burning. The chemistry between him and joint lead Willem Defoe was incredible.
And his portrayal of the brutal sheriff in Unforgiven when he beats Clint Eastwood to a pulp was acting of the highest order.
Whatever the circumstances of his death, RIP Gene.

Enemy of the State, Crimson Tide and Bonnie and Clyde were brilliant. I re-watched Bonnie and Clyde a couple years ago, it still holds up as an excellent movie even after all these years.

Great actor and in so many good films. My favourite performances and films of his are probably Enemy of the State and Unforgiven.

He was a keen pilot and about 25 years ago paid an unexpected visit to my place of work in Oshkosh. A famous call came through from the front desk to my boss: "there's a Mr Gene Hackman here to see you"... my boss said "what does he look like?"... "looks just like Gene Hackman"
