I can't help but think ....

That leaving Hannibal out was seen as a sign of weakness by PNE and their fans. His inclusion would have shown that we weren't going to be pushed around by the cannibal. Bullies are emboldened by the feeling of victory.

I think we're are reading into it a bit too much. The cup is low priority so we leave our best for the league. The last thing we need is to play another game and against Aston Villa and get our asses handed to us such is the gap in quality.
And Villa will be taking it very seriously to bring their fans the first silverware in years.

I think PNE never ever getting to the Premier League is the real sign of weakness, even Blackpool did it !

Team that beat Reading.

Burnley: Václav Hladký, Oliver Sonne (Bashir Humphreys 87), Joe Worrall, John Egan (Hjalmar Ekdal 72), Lucas Pires, Joe Bauress, Tommy McDermott (Josh Laurent 105), Luca Koleosho (Mike Trésor 87), Jay Rodriguez, Lyle Foster, Ashley Barnes (Zian Flemming 94). Subs not used: Etienne Green, Hannes Delcroix, Charlie Veevers, Tom Tweedy.

This was the team that beat Southampton

Burnley: Václav Hladký, CJ Egan-Riley (Maxime Estève 58), Joe Worrall, Bashir Humphreys, Oliver Sonne, Jonjo Shelvey (Joe Bauress 59), Hannibal, Lucas Pires, Manuel Benson (Marcus Edwards 59), Ashley Barnes, Jeremy Sarmiento (Nathan Redmond 83). Subs not used: Etienne Green, Josh Cullen, Enock Agyei, Jaydon Banel, Zian Flemming.

I don’t think there is much difference in either of those squads to the on that was put out on Saturday. The difference was attitude and thar was crap against PNE.
