Their free kick!!

Needs its own thread!!

Foul inside the penalty box circle and not only does the ref place the ball further back (he also has no spray) but as he’s pacing out the wall the WBA player moves it another 3 foot back, it’s no wonder he managed to score!! I hope Sky give it the same treatment as the Utd free kick and we see how far away the wall was.

Nowt will come of it. It’s the pub league ref standard at this level

I have to admit I didn't notice it at the game but both my lads watching on TV messaged me saying the freekick was nowhere near where it should have been. It was a cracking freekick but a yard can make the difference.

As for the ref not having the spray; he definitely did as he squirted it all over his own hand at one point. He was so incompetent he couldn't even use a spray can correctly ;)

Spot on that’s what we said in the Bob Lord, the original foul was straight in line with me, but taken 5 yards backwards with the wall not being allowed to move to reflect the repositioning

Said this at the time. I was absolutely fuming he was allowed to do this. Was berating the lino to do something. Knew he'd score after pinching three yards. Schoolboy stuff.

Both lino and ref were useless all game.

Looked offside in the build up as well but need to see it again

I don’t think he used his spray for the FK and it was so blatant moving the ball back
Can’t see why we didn’t protest
My guess the wall was 12-14 yards away
I think in the Millwall game on TV they had a fk and ref marked the spot and as he was pacing out 10 yards their player picked up the marker and moved it forward form near the touchline

The BBC report said he 'cleverly ' moved the ball back, surely he was actually cheating.

Whilst the ref was talking to our wall it very much looked like Cullen was protesting about it, you could see him shouting and pointing towards the ball, but obviously the ref ignored him.

We sit right behind the free kick in upper JM, and why don't we just admit it was a brilliant free kick, if Scott twine had done it we would be talking about it for rest of season, it's football without VAR, back to proper rules.

Because he moved it to a position where he probably practices taking them from week in week out.

Absolutely no one has said that it wasn't a brilliantly executed free-kick, but the point being made here is that by moving the ball back a good few yards and having the wall significantly further back than 10 yards it makes his job much, much easier.
It's very hard to get the ball up and over the wall if the kick is taken from the correct position. (Which should have been marked by the referee) But the taker actually moved the ball back to just about the perfect position to execute that set-piece.
Fair play to the player (Swift), but very poor from the officials

The squares on the pitch are clearly 6 yards, the foul took place a yard or maybe a yard and a half outside the area, the ball is 23 yards away when struck, meaning our wall is 11 yards away given their line on the edge of the second square.

If the free kick was taken from where the foul took place then the likelihood of the striker being able to get the ball up and down over the wall would be much more difficult than moving it back 3 yards.

There is also the question about whether the wall should have immediately moved 3 yards forward when the ball was moved.

Instead, we were more concerned about arguing with the ref and positioning the lying down defender whilst their bloke hoofed it into the corner.

By the laws of the game if a free kick is taken from the incorrect place it should be retaken, not with this cretin though, plus it was a very debatable free kick in the first place where far more "obvious" fouls were waved away

What I will say though if the wall were aware of what was happening they should have walked a yard or two towards the ball and make the point clear

1. It was a brilliant free kick. No-one is suggesting otherwise
2. It was cheating, and the goal shouldn't have stood
3. It's not "proper rules" when the rules aren't followed. This isn't a subjective issue. The free kick was objectively taken from the wrong place. And you don't need VAR for that. You need a competent referee. Which we didn't have

With regards to VAR - had it been in use, could it have disallowed the goal due to incorrect placement? Or once the whistle blows is it too late?

This question came up with the Ivan Toney free kick. The ball is in play once the ball has been kicked. But if the free kick has been taken from the correct place, then the game has technically not restarted as the free kick hasn't been taken yet. VAR could quite rightly say that the free kick was taken from an incorrect place. VAR would them be able to say that as it was incorrectly placed, that play has not restarted yet. The correct decision would be a yellow card to the player who moves the ball, and is therefore trying to gain an unfair advantage, and a re-taking of the free kick

This is where VAR used correctly would really help the game. They are objective issues, and quick decisions can be made

The WBA fan from Albion Analysis who spoke on this week's Turfcast podcast goes into it. He speaks very well, and it's well worth a listen

The first photo shows exactly why it wasn't a free kick. The contact is initiated with Swift's left leg, and collides with the part of Brownhill that was stationary

I have sympathy with the ref for falling for it. But I have no sympathy whatsoever for the countless other errors he made

The wall looks miles away in that picture, no wonder the guy could get over it, cheating ------.

We had a free kick from virtually the same spot in 2nd half, it was taken from correct position the ball hit the defenders head!!

Got to presume his spray's not working, which begs the question do they not have spares? In any case as a result he doesn't know if the ball or the wall are in the right positions. We're owed an explanation there.
Swift has absolutely slammed that free kick over the wall and it's gone in not even close to the crossbar. He can't do that with a wall at 10 yards.

It's exactly 10 yards from the penalty spot to the edge of the D

The ball looks to be just behind the level of the edge of the D, and the wall looks in line with the penalty spot. Its probably about 10.5-11yds between ball and wall

The distance of the ball to the wall is irrelevant though, it’s the distance to the goal that matters

If he’d have taken the free kick from where the “foul” happened (and I say “foul” as I’m not sure it was) then getting the ball to go over the wall and still dip enough to go under the bar is a lot harder from 18yrds as it is from 22yrds

That is true. But it's also easier when the wall is 11yrds away, rather than 10

I guess it was cheating in the same way that Trafford cheated against Sunderland by feigning injury. Either that or it’s intelligent gamesmanship.

That has been a foul more often than not for about 25 years. It was always likely to be given because Cullen was in the way.

But clearly, a free kick from 19 yards out with the wall 10 yards back is much harder proposition than one from 22 yards out with the wall 12 yards away. In the end that's what the referee offered up. I don't think it cost us the game though because overall WBA deserved their point.

Other than that, for all the stick he gets, I thought the ref did fine. The two glaring mistakes I saw (giving a goal kick when Styles denied Edwards and a foul against Cullen on half way) were wrong decisions by the linesman.

The broader view to take would be that, until they scored, we really hadn’t got going. Their goal seemed to wake us up. So if they hadn’t scored we possibly wouldn’t have either.

From where we sat you could hear the set piece coach instructing whenever there was one. He was the one shouting the instructions for Edwards to lie down behind the wall. He was telling Steve where to stand in the wall in case the free kick went high. I doubt most of the players would not have noticed that the Albion player moved the ball back as they were getting information overload from the technical area. Another note from last night, if the set piece coach went into the technical area, Parker went and sat down.

Saw it at the time and couldn't understand why our senior players weren't moaning about it. That is what Barnes gives us.

I didn't think it was a foul. Certainly not after turning down the Edwards foul at the other end.

Still think our senior players should be reffing the game for him.

I have to disagree with that. What Trafford did was gamesmanship, getting into the mind of the player taking the penalty - he didn’t move the ball further away or make the goal smaller.

What the player did last night was cheating because he got an advantage by moving the ball away from the wall.

Trafford was attempting to gain a similar advantage .
As has been noted earlier in the thread, if we had scored a free kick like that, we’d all be ecstatic.
Given the wilderness that our set pieces occupy, not any chance of that.
Maybe we should put in a bid for WBA’s set piece coach. We could offer to trade in ours. Should get a good price - hardly used!

There was a free kick we got in the second half where he sprayed the line, then there was a sub that took ages and the spray faded. A West Brom player then stood 5 yards from our taker and he ignored it. Really frustrating.
