Black and Blue

When I started watching at the turn of the sixties I seem to remember some clubs; Spurs, West Brom, maybe Preston sometimes playing in white and black and sometimes white and dark navy blue. The fans came in scarves the same. Can anyone confirm this or am I dreaming, please?

The programme for BFC always referred to shorts as knickers

My uncle told me that here in Serbia back in those days most teams used to play in black and white, even our beloved Red Star wore black and white stripes just like the eternal enemy Partizan. Obviously as time went on the club hierarchy changed to the famous red and white. Ironically he said the change happened the week he got his first colour TV.

For that to work you need one team wearing shirts with black/white/black/white stripes, whilst the other wears white/black/white/black stripes, otherwise the ref wouldn't be able to tell them apart

This thread reminds me of that old classic Ted Lowe Snooker comment.

“For those of you watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green.”

:D

Googled and according to the late Ted Lowe
The WBA shirt in the early 50’s was dark blue and white stripes which seems to have progressed later to black and white and as a poster before noted a period when stripes were yellow and green

Derby County in the 70’s definitely wore dark blue/navy shorts. Now black of course.

To my mind Spurs has always been a very, very dark navy blue (and white) and sometimes the navy is so dark it appears black on both the strip and the scarves, but isn't. Preston exactly the same. Whereas Derby for example, I've always had down as black (with white).

Never seen West Brom in black and white stripes. In the era of Cunningham and Regis they wore a darker shade of blue compared to the 1960's but I've never associated WBA with black in their strip.

My recollection of WBA and Spurs would most definitely be them wearing Navy Blue and White.

I think that the Derby side under Clough that were champions in the late 60's wore black shorts, Mackay's team that won the League in the mid-70's. wore navy shorts. My belief is that West Brom have always worn navy and white stripes since I started watching football in the mid 60's.
