Some very strange choices. Henderson in ahead of Gallacher and Adam Wharton. Kyle Walker as well looked absolutely shot playing for City this season.

Gallagher looked strong for Atletico midweek. He fits into Simeone's defensive philosophy. Also popped up to score their early (28 seconds) goal.

Delighted for Traff, obviously, and I think he deserves it, but that is such a weird squad. So many has beens selected, so many fresh talented players ignored.

Can we give the guy a chance please before we start to criticise him and his selection.

Every 2 years we have a chance to win a tournament along with about 6 teams in the Euro's and about 10 teams in the World Cup

I never get the mentality that we 'should be winning things'

so should all the other teams with great players but only one can win in every 2 years

I enjoy watching England but the expectation and the 'We have the divine right to win things' mentality , does my head in

I hope he does fantastic but he has as much chance as all other top managers with the squad we have against the other brilliant squads...

Tuchel starts with a clean sheet of paper-he has brought in some deserving cases ie Burn. The one that really puzzles me is Henderson who I saw at Leicester at least two seasons ago and he was well past it in everything he did. A great midfielder in his day and leader-but ahead of Gibbs White ?????

Personally he's the first England manager I've been optimistic about since Sven. I think he'll be great for England.

It's an interesting one, there's always a clamour for young players etc. But we know how important experience can be. Maybe bringing In a few experienced pros will help getting them behind the scenes.

He’s not there to bring through the next generation, he’s there ti win a trophy with this one.

And that's the point. No-one will care how old the squad is, or whether they play rubbish football if England win a major trophy.

Both Italy and Germany have turned pragmatic football into an art form. And it works time and again for them.

I for one am excited about seeing a 36 year old Jordan Henderson bossing our midfield in 95°C heat in Texas or somewhere at the 2026 World Cup.

You all need to get on board.

We've loads of young players knocking about and a lot better options than Jordan Henderson.

Must admit thats what i thought. Give a manager an 18 month contract and you can't expect him to think long term.

He won't even make it to the World Cup, just watch the media absolutely rip him to pieces.

Can't really see anything too controversial. Henderson and Rashford are the anomalies. Perhaps he's taking a look to see if Henderson still has anything to give, and obviously wants to give Rashford the clean slate that he has been given at club level.

I wouldn't be unhappy with Rashford, quality player.

Seems a strong squad to me to be fair. Henderson has obviously been brought in as an experienced head in a relatively young squad although Gallagher can certainly feel hard done by given his fine form for Atletico.

I also think Branthwaite deserves a chance ahead of Quansah although whether either will/would get a run out is up for debate.

Fantastic for Traff - he is destined to be England no 1 in the coming years it would seem.

We saw first hand last year the result of having a squad of talented youth players and limited numbers of old-hands to guide them.

If Henderson starts then I’ll be surprised and wrong but I view his selection in the same way as us signing Barnes - showing the future stars what it means to be an England/(Burnley) players.

In terms of the 18 month contract/short term view - I don’t care tbh. Win the World Cup is the only goal for me. The talent of future players is completely independent of the national team. so if the next incarnation of Pele is English it’s not going to do him much harm waiting a year and half to make his debut so what?

I mean to be fair I don’t live far away but even by our standards that’s pretty effing hot

This U21 squad is frighteningly good, definitely some players in there who should have been given a chance ready for the next world cup

I haven't watched enough of the players in the squad to comment too much, but I find it strange that Henderson is back in ahead of Wharton. Only reason I can think is that he is an important influence in the dressing room.

It's great we have so many options that we can complain when some are left out.

Branthwaite, Rico Lewis, Wharton and Nwaneri will all be starters in the Under 21's and therefore will have more game time to be judged on, than if they were squad players in the first team.

Saw him play for Toulouse away to Auxerre a few weeks back. He's solid but isn't the quickest. Toulouse play with three at the back with Cresswell in the middle. The other defenders are faster than him. He's certainly slower than CJER.

I don't think CJER is classed as slow to be honest, if we can keep Esteve next year I'd like to see three at the back for us with Esteve, CJER, Beyer as the three or even Humphreys in there is an option

I wasn't implying CJER is slow. On the contrary, I doubt whether there are any quicker CBs in the division. However, there are in the PL.

No doubt England’s national team has flattered to deceive or just been outright bad! However, I think it’s fair to say we have been competitive on the world stage for the past 10 years under Southgate’s leadership although I thought we were a poor show at the last Euro’s despite somehow getting to the final.

Getting over the line in a major tournament is bloody hard though and I think we really missed our chance against Italy whereas Spain were much the better side in the last final.

I also think that we have lost our identity a bit too much with trying to be more like Spain in the way we play. I think our players are much more suited to a more aggressive and direct style of play that brings the best out of our physicality alongside our more skilful players in attack.

I suspect Tuchel’s squad selection suggests he may feel the same way and here’s hoping we can finally get this monkey of our back by winning the World Cup.

This is a complete revolution from what Southgate used to prioritize.

Ignoring the irrelevance of the Stan and Coyle comparisons, how do emotion and hunger act as keystones? And what clues do they give? Do you even know which emotions to expect?
