Why do you want promotion?

by burnley007
I know it sounds like a stupid question, but even though we all crave promotion, what is that makes you want to go back up?

Is it just wanting us to be as high as possible?
money?
bragging rights?

Do you ever find yourself dreading the reality of it? I know I do, it can be a poisoned chalice nowadays. I really don't see of the 3 teams in the hunt for automatic promotion being anywhere near good enough to stay up next season and it could be a real schittshow for all the promoted teams.

I don't mean this as a negative, just wondered how others thought?

But yes, obviously I am DESPERATE for us to go up, no matter what happens next season, (it's the hope that kills us).

Because since the end of WW2 we've spent over 30 seasons in the top flight ...and I've seen us win more than we've lost. And I know that those suggesting its impossible for a small club to survive at that level are parrotting bullsh1t from their rear ends.
And...tbh, if Garlick had looked beyond using Dyche's success to line his back sack rather than invest the prem money on the team we'd be there still.

Parker could be the right man...and Pace is prepared to invest in the team. If we do go up we may well stay up for longer than many think.

Am not sure. If far bigger clubs than us have struggled to stay up with more financial clout, then there is certainly no guarantee then we would have done.

We have always relied on PL money with no rich chairman to help us out.

I want Burnley to win every game they play and win every competition they're in. In the championship that means being promoted.

Didn’t we have a need for it before? Wasn’t the club in dire straits before Coyle’s promotion, and even Dyche’s first? Why would it be any different if, say, Garlick was still here?

Have to aim for the top, otherwise there's no point in having professional leagues in my opinion.

It wouldn't be no major upset from me if we didn't go up, I don't mind the championship, but it's nice to do better than that.

Regardless of what's said above, we are not reliant on promotion this season for our existence. Complete nonsense

Promotion this season is about righting the wrongs of last season. I'd like us to go up and give it a try with this group of players - the ones who will have earned it. We don't need to spend £150m again that's for sure!! A couple of shrewd signings could be the difference - a PL standard striker and an experienced head to knit things together in front of our young back 4 would go a long way towards making us competitive. Trafford, Roberts, CJ, Esteve, Humphries is a decent base to build from.

I think the risk under Garlick was eventually cutting costs until we ended up in league 1/2. Under Pace the concern is the club going into administration and then who knows what if we don't have premier league money or parachute payments.

I would say there’s pretty much zero risk of that with debt levels as they are and Trafford and Esteve on our books, with Amdouni to sell.

I want promotion because I want to see our club and town competing in the best league in the world against the big boys.

I’m not so concerned about winning every week as most on here seem to be because I recognise the huge gulf in class between the competition. We’re not a **** team if we lose every week in the premier league - we’re still in the top 20% of teams in the country and living a dream the rest of the 72 would kill for.

But also because there seems to be a view that if we stay down we’ll keep competing at the top but I doubt we will. Every year there’s 3 with a bigger budget than us that enter the league and as our parachutes tail off it’s easy to become a Watford/Norwich/Stoke/Luton. I don’t want that for Burnley.

Because I believe we can do anything Bournemouth can do or even better like finishing 7th. Even promotion followed by another relegation makes our club more financially viable. What do we have to lose ?

It wasn't a dig at the owners, it's just a fact we will need prem money every two years minimum.

It was probably classed as dire straits as we lost 4m that season and the directors loaned the club money to pay for it.
They obviously wanted it back though.

I wouldn't be so sure. We'd have to eventually cut to having basically the lowest wage budget in the division and live off free transfers and small transfer fees.
I don't think all these Americans have invested in the club to be a low budget Championship/league 1 club. I think they'd happily take quite big risks to give us the chance to get back up.

Financial security.

I do believe we're heading in the right direction, but until we are in a position where not bouncing back is controllable, then we need it.

I guess we're all fairly similar then.

All want promotion, but under no illusions as to how rough next season could be.

If we don't go up, I do worry about the club, how many of our better players would leave and not be replaced? Could be devastating.

My feelings exactly. I'm not fussed about the PL and it's a lot of "emperors new clothes" about it tbh, but there's no getting away from the enormous finances it generates and we need that to keep us "punching" or we'll just sink into mediocre oblivion like so many before us. Stoke, WBA, Norwich, Cardiff to name some and only on Saturday I was thinking, crikey it's only a few short years ago that no team in the PL really wanted to go to Swansea!

I'd be happy being a good Championship side for the forseeable, but the harsh reality is, after this season, the level of cost cutting we'd need to make would see us being an at best, average Championship side.

The Prem is pretty miserable but a necessary evil to continue lording it over the rest down here every other year.

The no no for me ,and I know it filters down through the divs but The Premier League has become riddled with players who think they are entitled to win ,they strut about and snarl when they score and unless we are playing in it I no longer can sit through 2 hours of the stuff ,this season 90 % of the time our players are over the moon when they score and we even get JT running the length of the pitch when Benson and Bashley have scored in the last few weeks ,there’s no VAR this season and what a croc of **** we’ll have to put up with as a little club if we go up ,apart from 3 or 4 most of the pundits shouldn’t be allowed on their own, however saying all that I can’t wait for us to go up .

I never want to be in the same league as them down the road - and it always has to be us at least one division higher.

I want to win every game.

I want my small town club to be able to stick it to the big boys and watch em cry when we do.

It’s not that people don’t want us to go up. It’s just that people don’t want to see our young team being beaten more often than not by Squads worth £billions. Everyone wants to see us be successful in the PL but the reality is quite the opposite I fear.

This crops up a lot, but I once thought the only target had to be top flight, couldnt stand the idea of not wanting promotion to the premier league based on some fans love of 3pm kick offs etc, .
Sadly this generation of fans has seen what has happened to clubs that try to yo-yo, some manage better than others, but a lot fade away into obscurity.
The 2009 promotion was special because of the number of years we were down in the depths of the divisions.
Since our relegation the season after we have got used to what happens when we bounce back, we either manage the astounding success under Dyche of some european competition and a staggeringly impressivley high finish, or we get beaten soundly by Man city every fixture by about 5-0 and the gulf in stature becomes obvious.
We as fans are at the mercy of whatever corporate entity gets to control the purse strings.
We are split in opinions on how that is regarded. some will accept anything, others are sceptical about debts, and risks for the future. #
Thats not just Burnley, its a lot of clubs.
Instead of being fans of the game, we now seem fascinated by business models, and whether or not betting companies are necessary for survival. Its far removed from the Jimmy Mac era, a long, long way from Bob Lord and his butcher shop .

1. Glory
2. Money

It’s as simple as that, last time we went up, before the Kompany season in the prem I said if they’d give us the cash after winning the champ and leave us in the same league I’d love it.

Being realistic, the promoted teams came straight back down last season and almost certainly will do this season.
We won't score goals in the PL and our build up play is too slow, so how do we buck that trend?
We want promotion because the game is all about winning and playing at the highest level, but its a poisoned chalice.

I’ve no idea what will happen, so unlike you I won’t make such an assertive claim, but Luton scored 57 goals in the entire 22/23 season (we currently have 52 with 8 to play), while we scored 87. Last season, in the Prem, they scored 52 while we scored 41.

Money.

The standard from about lower midtable championship football down is absolutely honking and anyone who tells you that it's much more fun watching non league etc is just gaslighting themselves and you.

I don't agree Parkers style is appropriate, certainly not in every game but there is beauty in the execution in it and technically, by and large, it is generally done to a high standard.

If the price of us having money and being able to acquire a better standard of player to enable us to compete at a better level is the risk of having a bad 9 months every two or three years then so be it in my view. In my opinion the VK season was an outlier, an experiment that was executed poorly due to a number of factors, so for the last 10-15 years, it's hardly been one bad season, one good season - even during our bad seasons under Dyche we still had patches of good play.

I actually don’t want us to go up really, but know the club needs the money. We need to go up, and probably stay up for at least one season before relegation again so we get 3 years of parachute money and can then be less bothered about promotion.

I hate the Premier League. I hate VAR. I had losing most weeks. I hate that the regular beatings make our fans lose interest. I hate the atmosphere. I hate the refs speaking with the top players on first name terms. I hate the players falling over like they’re dying after another player blows on them.

So, if we go up, I’d celebrate promotion but then be dreading it by August.

I've seen many promotions and relegations in my time since 1961 watching Burnley and I am looking forward to us winning the Championship again this year.Money is a necessity to running a successful club and no matter how passionate their support is essential to survival.
Reading players take packed lunches to training as another foreign owner wrecks a team all the locals are passionate about. What is disturbing is the lack of due diligence on ownership of teams with some highly dubious owners getting their hands on clubs. Occasionally,I get a reminder of how quickly things flip. I was driving past Flyde FC ground near me and the next home game was Oldham. That definitely made me sad as one of the town teams have fallen so far in what seems only yesterday that they were looking down the leagues at us playing in Div4 and desperate to stay up.

I'd rather us play in the top division against some of the best players in the world, than not.

We have to go up to be able to be one of the better teams (because of the money). I'm under no illusion that if we don't go up, eventually we find ourselves getting beat by lesser teams in the Championship longing for the days when we could aim to be at the top table.

Every team should always want to win and gain promotion! Otherwise, what’s the point in having a tiered league system, unless of course you are in favour of an American franchise system with no promotion or relegation.

However, I do understand why fans aren’t so keen on watching us get thumped 3-0 every week in the prem.

Either way, in my opinion, Football has a problem which there isn’t really a solution for or the powers that be don’t want to solve. The problem being of course is that the gap between the prem and leagues below it have almost become insurmountable for so-called smaller clubs to break in to on a consistent basis.

I dare say this is why plenty of paying fans now can’t stand the thought of another season in a league whereby the odds are you’re highly likely to be relegated from. I can’t imagine how Saints fans are feeling at the moment knowing there’s a good chance they are about to become the worst team in Premier League history.
