The Worst Decision Since ... When?

Watching the game today at a friend's house and the Coventry goal is such an easy offside decision to give.

It's laughably simple. There isn't a single Burnley player in between him and the goalline, let alone two.

Anyway, it got me thinking about those dreadful decisions that were so bad you can still recall them years later.

That Coventry goal is the worst decision since ... Lee Mason and the handball on the line in the opening minutes vs Preston waaay back in 2007.

Worst decision since when?

Offside at Ewood?

I'm still reeling from the non-foul, non-red card when the Norwich keeper (Krul?) smashed Vydra square in the chops.

Lots of poor decisions are at least excused by interpretation

That non-offside today is completely inexcusable
It's black and white. And obvious

Incompetence. Dreadful decision that no team deserves.

Shocking, when he caught the ball at Pompey and we didn't get a penalty was the worst one this season I think.

The worst one I can remember is when Meslier fouled Barnes, we scored. Goal disallowed, what made this worst is var inability to sort too.

That Leeds one when their GK nearly broke Ben Mees back and we didnt get Barnes goal

The Krul punch Vs Norwich would've kept us up if we'd scored the penalty?

And VAR rubber stamped it!

I actually think that might be the worst decision I've ever seen against us. It's so blatantly obvious even from first viewing that you have to wonder what the linesman was even looking at.
Thank God it hasn't cost us.

A primary school kid could have given that offside today. It's about as basic a decision as there possibly is.

Not quite - there was VAR but they unable to intervene because the ref had blown up so early.

In the same game, VAR rubber stamped a penalty which shouldn’t have been given where Pope clearly got the ball.

Perfect example today of decisions evening themselves out over a season, we've had at least two offside decisions go our way. I'd still rather have it this way than sit through 5 minutes of line drawing by VAR. Bring in automated offsides and I'll say different though.

The Roberts sending off vs Boro (I think) in the Kompany promotion season. Ref sent him off for handball when the ball had bounced off the bar

It’s horrendously bad. Linesman should be demoted several leagues for a major error.

I posted on the highlights thread, watch the Coventry goal in slow motion, the ball loops up off Roberts left arm (who's on the floor when the shot comes in) to Haji Wright, so I presume that's onside according to the current rules?

Hopefully true. With the amount of clear penalties not given in our favour this year, we will be due loads of dodgy ones in our final games :D

I was certain the goal would have been disallowed today, last time I felt like that only for the goal to stand was the foul on Trafford against Luton when we drew 1 all last season. As per Rooster's post though, that was down to interpretation so not as bad a decision as today

Does anyone have a good still shot? I have a suspicion, that whilst clearly onside, Roberts’ outstretched leg wasn’t a million miles from being level with their striker. It’s a howler for sure, but maybe closer than first thought.

VAR should have 'given' us a penalty for the attack on Mee, the latter having been penalised wrongly.

If Roberts played the ball under control and under no pressure, that would kill the offside. If Roberts was blocking a shot, then the offside stands.

He came back from an offdide position before the ball hit Roberts anyway, so he was offside twice wasn't he?

He’s that far offside it’s impossible to get them on the same camera shot
Seriously though the fact that he was goal side of Trafford too, makes it a hard to fathom decision

Obviously I’m at the other end today so just saw our players clearly upset with the decision.

Quickly told it was offside and saw the still pic at half time and have now seen it on the highlights package.

It’s hard to fathom how on earth the assistant hasn’t flagged that. Appalling decision.

Yes. There needs to be 2 “defending” players between the attacker and goal

Even if Roberts was the only player between Wright and the goal, he would have been offside

Yes, I understand the offside law. I just hadn’t realised that their player was also well beyond Trafford as well as Roberts as the Sky+ production isn’t great.

The Lee Mason v Preston one is always my benchmark for terrible decisions. You can get stuff wrong but he saw that clear as day as we all did and just bottled it. Nothing he did in his career after that changed my mind about him.

I've seen many incidents where the ref has stopped play for something else and VAR has brought it back to give a penalty. Wasn't it against Bournemouth where the ref had given Bournemouth a goal and brought it back for a penalty to us? It happens.

VAR couldn't give the goal because the whistle blew before the ball was in the net, but VAR's jurisdiction over penalties goes on until play stops and has restarted. The next whistle doesn't stop it.

The other bad decision that came to mind when I wrote the OP hasn't been mentioned - the "non goal" against Brighton in 2016.

At the time, a defeat would have curtailed our 23 unbeaten at number 16 and given Brighton a psychological boost in the promotion race.

As it is, we scored a near identical goal a few minutes later and got the JUSTICE we deserved.

This incident would surely have been more prominently remembered if it had proved crucial or decisive in the game or -shudder- even in clinching promotion or not. Obviously we won the league at a canter in the end but if we hadn't remained unbeaten who knows how things would have panned out?
