U18s v Swansea

Two wins needed from four games to be certain of winning the league. With no first team game for six days coupled with the last day of the decent weather, I thought it was time I made a return to Gawthorpe.

5 mins gone, still 0-0 but we’ve had three good chances.

We’ve made four substitutions now and brought on some younger players.

Great win. Well done lads!

Tony - I asked you on the U18s title article thread but you may not have seen it. Saw Tony Philliskirk saying that we’d need to draft in a younger back line for the remaining games as the more senior players wouldn’t be here. Any idea why that is?

I thought that might be the case but seemed strange letting them go before the season ends. Thanks.

If they haven’t got deals then it’s only right they are given the opportunity to go and play elsewhere to try and win a contract

Was a bit strange for me today Ashington. I didn't recognise most of the players so was constantly having to check the team sheet. But we could have been three up before they scored and we played really, really well.

Yes, understand that, although I’d have thought they’d do that by joining up in pre-season somewhere. And if they’re not playing games elsewhere should continue here to stay fit. So I assume they are all playing.

Seemed to have released quite a lot this year, or more than I recall us doing in the past. Is that right or have I not been paying enough attention previously?

Great to hear. Academy seems to be on a real high at the moment. The place and staff must be buzzing.

From what I have read, we've only released five. Some of them are off playing for other clubs as trialists, trying to win deals. We, as a club, should be doing all we can to get them fixed up elsewhere and that's what we are doing.

Ah, I thought it was far more for some reason. Seemed strange for a team top of their league. Hopefully the released lads get deals wherever they’re on trial.

Kian looks like hes going to be a serious prospect. I suspect he will be offered a pro very soon

I think it’s the first time I’ve seen him play, just wish I could get to more games.

Five isn't many, is it?

Thing is, it must be heartbreaking for young lads when they're told they won't be getting a pro deal. You can understand them wanting to leave and, as Tony rightly says, it's our club's duty to help them as much as possible. They might look like men physically but they're young lads who have to cope with great disappointment.

I can vouch for it, its heart breaking, some very good players have been released though and they will hopefully get decent clubs through their agents. You forgot theyre still kids

I’d hate to be responsible for having to tell them too. Really hope those leaving get fixed up elsewhere.
