• Time for a new plaque?

Came across this today in my collection. Well they've earned a new one.
I love the bottom paragraph. They did.

I was wondering where that plaque is now. For years it was at the top of the players tunnel in the cricket field stand but it was before they moved the tunnel that I last saw it.

"As an incentive to all the players of the club to maintain and if possible surpass the results before set forth"

Dawson, Halley, Boyle, Watson, Anderson, Kelly to name but six. Will these players of today be remembered in over a century?

I would hope so. It really is an enormous achievement, which has required a great deal of effort, determination and coaching.
Definitely time for a new plaque.

We had this chat in 2023, i think its very disconcerting that we are unable to identify where this plaque is.

I always loved seeing it at the players tunnel.

I definitely think the club should do the same thing to commemorate the achievement and put the two of them together.

It appears to be located in the Centenary Suite.

There’s a clear case for having the 2 plaques alongside each other as there’s a clear distinction between the two
The 30 was in the top tier
Whatever number this eventually reaches it is in the 2nd tier
Both are remarkable achievements

I remember my Grandad and a few others from the elder generation waxing lyrical about "Halley, Boyle and Watson" in that order.

Not sure why those three were mentioned all the time, I think Watson was captain?

Who do you think we will wax lyrical about from this season in 30 years time

?

Esteve, Brownhill and Egan Riley?

Trafford, Anthony and Brownhill?

Our record at Championship level in the past decade is incredible. If we can remain unbeaten at 33 games until the end of the season, we will have a good chance of extending that number should we return to this level in the next year or two. (Not that I look forward to relegation of course)

Our 23 undefeated run was broken in the 1st game of our next Championship season!

I don't recall that. We lost our first game on our return to the PL, but i didn't think we lost our first game following relegation back to the Championship.
Without checking I thought we beat Huddersfield away? Our first defeat was at Watford I think.

I bet the plaque is lying along side the Players Portraits which were outside the ground around Turf Moor,the Chairman does not like them,all he is bothered about is the future,no respect at all for our past memories for us older fans,and players,that is what it feels like,UTC.

Dont talk absolute ********, the plaque is in the Centenary lounge as posted above.

The pictures wouldn't fit the style of the ground as they once were, however there's still plenty of historic stuff displayed around the club

My Grandad used to talk about 'Halley Boyle and Watson' in that order as well.

On a similar subject: The first away game I ever attended was an FA Cup tie to Stockport County in 1959, won 3-1. I can still remember Stockports goalie, two full backs and three half backs (in old money).... Lea, Betts, Webb, Porteous, Murray, Clemson. Can't remember the forward line though

I'm 78 now, why the hell would I remember that after all these years? I can't remember what I had for bloody dinner last night

Amazing isn't it? if i was to name Burnley's greatest ever midfield players I'd include Halley, Boyle and Watson even though I've only read of them.

Lets hope we can extend it to at least 35

Agreed, also the 30 unbeaten was a record for all clubs at the time?

When George Halley moved to Burnley, he and his family rented a room in a terraced house in Burnley which I learned was the house I was brought up in. I told my mum to get a blue plaque for the wall but she immediately dismissed that idea even though she'd was really good friends with the Halley family.

brilliant Tony... btw our house sale appears to be back on the rails.....So we went house hunting on Tuesday...had an offer accepted. Fingers crossed that this time it goes through without hitch.

Bit of research.
Halley, Boyle & Watson made their first appearance as our half back line on March 15th 1913 in a 3-1 home win over Bury. George Halleys debut.
Their final appearance together was Feb 11th 1922 a 1-2 home defeat to our neighbours. This was the 500th league game at Turf Moor. Tommy Boyle only played the next two matches before injury finished his career.
9 years, interrupted by WW1, in that time they were promoted in 1913, FA Cup winners in 1914, first division runners-up in 1920 and first division CHAMPIONS in 1921. How the war robbed us.
What shocked me, for a half back line, was their sizes. Boyle at 5’7” and Halley & Watson both at 5’8”. How the sporting world has shot up.

I knew George Halley's son Andy really well and he was no taller

Hi exile, your memory is spot on regarding Stockport's numbers 1-6. If you're interested their forward line was Wilson, Jackson, Smith, Holden & Clarke. Jackson scored their goal.

I think they should now produce a new plaque (once the run is over) using exactly the same excellent wording as the first one, adapting it for the dates and personnel, and place it next to the existing one.
