Max Anderson Crawley Town

Anderson's 60th minute goal v Shrewsbury at the weekend was apparently the 600,000th goal scored in English league football since it began in 1888.
Someone called Soren Elbech, known online as
17 Laws Guy, claims to have worked this out, but how he's done it I don't know. Would there be records existing this far back?
Anyway, didn't do Crawley much good, they got relegated.

So he’d ‘just’ have to add up the total goals scored column for each division for each season, then keep tabs on the minutes the goals were scored on the day.
It’d be boring doing it but it seems simple enough?

Or he could simply create an algorithm to do all the hard work for him whilst he’s having his 40 winks.

Yes, on the face of it, I agree it seems simple,
but consider this...
In March 1962, Accrington Stanley resigned from the FL
after their unresolvable financial struggles and irregularities. That was just past mid-season.
So their record from that uncompleted 1961/62 season was then expunged from the FL records.
So should the goals that Stanley and their opponents
scored in that season in the games they played before they departed count?
Yes, the goals were actually scored, but doesn't the
fact the record was expunged nullify them?
Some doubt for me.
And I'm sure there was another club that packed up mid-season, but can't call them to mind.

Aldershot 91-92, the season we got promoted. We beat them twice

I've had correspondence recently with Søren who wanted goal times from a Burnley game in the 1920s in helping to determine the scorer of the 100,000.

No. If their records have been expunged then they don’t count. I would only go off the final league tables.
Losing 6 points when Aldershot dropped out still annoys me if I think about it too hard about it though. I was so annoyed as a kid about that.

Not really much to do with this but I noticed the other day that Leeds were only formed in 1919 !

The worst part was that we'd just spent decent money on signing Adrian Randall from them not too long before they went out of business. Sad for Aldershot, liked playing them- didn't they have trees by the side of their old field? Like most other teams that went out of business they reformed as another entity.

Just League goals will do!

Leeds United replaced Leeds City who were expelled from the league in 1919

Though in that case the record Leeds City had up to the expulsion was taken over by Port Vale, who came into the league instead. So there were no goals to subtract from the total league goals in that case.
Leeds United were elected to the league later, perhaps the next summer. Presumably they persuaded the other clubs they were "Champions of Europe" and a "massive club".

I'm sure on the day that Aldershot dropped out we got knocked off the top of the league because of the lost points. That might be why it annoyed you at the time. Could be wrong though

It was the other way round actually. We were second before the 6 point deduction, but because Blackpool (who were top) got 6 points deducted as well, and their goal difference was affected more than ours, we went to the top.

Ahh right, I knew it affected our position somewhere. I was at high school then so my memory was part right. Nothing to be annoyed about at the time then. We went top without playing

I remember Aldershot going, but didn't Maidstone also go under in the same season?

Maidstone went under at the start of the 1992/93 season, they were supposed to play Scunthorpe away for their first game but didnt make it. There is a programme that exists for that game too

It wouldn't be too hard to work out given the EFL presented Gary Taylor-Fletcher (then at Huddersfield) with a special trophy in 2006 when he scored the 500,000th goal. Just count 100,000 on from that goal.

Are you sure? I thought Rotherham moved to the top and us second the day the points were taken as Rotherham had only played Aldershot once?

Our goal scored away at Aldershot didn't appear on our video compilation as Aldershot hadn't enough money to pay the recording firm who wouldn't release the footage.I think Steve Harper scored the winner

Looking at this link showing the table the day before Aldershot folded but without their results I think the OP is probably right

Depends which video compilation you bought. If you got the 1hr ITV type one then it isnt there but that game was definitely on the 3hr part2 club highlights video which I have on a memory stick now

In fact I'll go one better, the highlights of the game are 3 mins into this video which is a brilliant watch from start to finish by the way
