Form only, obviously, but seems to have gone off the boil since April.

He probably could have earnt double that in Saudi. I’d say given his form this season, it’s worth it for another couple of seasons. They wouldn’t have won the league without him this season.

Is it worth the risk though? How many million does it cost to replace him? And can anyone replicate his return at the minute? It’s a tough task to find somebody that steps into his shoes.

Undoubtedly his return this season suggests big shoes to fill for any potential replacement. For me, it's worth the risk of a new contract but £41m in wages over the next two years?

It does make an interesting argument though, paying a player for the next two years (who is entering the twilight of their career) hoping they'll continue what they've done for the last 6-7 years in their prime.

Seeing Man City do the opposite with KDB, adds to the flavour.

I think it's fair, as far as fair goes in the mad world of football finance.
You might be able to downgrade to a few very good but not quite that good players for a load more money - Martinelli, Saka, Foden, Isak - and they will give you something long term, but in current ability I'm not sure you can spend £40,000,000 better than Liverpool have just done for their right wing position to play every week.

Although the general consensus is that’s because City kept one or two of their stars a year past their best.

£40m or whatever for Salah’s last two seasons is a bargain. But they’re paying that for his next two. He might well prove to be worth it but there’s no guarantees, other than at some point quite soon, he won’t be.

I think it's more because Rodri had a season ending injury v early on in the season - he's that pivotal to them.

The season prior, he was quite easily 'the best' midfielder in the world.
